Justice League: Dark is yet another DC DTV movie set in their revamped universe based on the "New 52" comics imprint. While the movie is set between Justice League vs Teen Titans and Teen Titans: The Judas Contract and follows the same continuity it's not directly related to neither, being a standalone side story. It's also, easily, the best of these movies until this point since the revamp, and for now the one I can see myself rewatching multiple times.

The story is as follows: all over the globe people are hallucinating others as if they were demons and monsters, causing irreparable physical and psychological damage to them and themselves. The Justice League reasons this is a mystical attack, so Batman decides to recruit the help of occult detective John Constantine in order to figure out the origin of this attack. Due to the nature of the situation, other mystical beings join the quest, temporarily forming the titular group, the Justice League Dark, as they work an uphill battle to stop the threat before an increasingly powerful villain brings humanity to its end.

Unless you happen to be one of the three people on the planet who's not familiar with Batman, you don't need to have watched any of the previous movies to understand any of these characters. All of them are well introduced and given their due. The villain manages to be quite impressive and scarily powerful. The stakes are quite high, and it's shown. It's also a film in which victory comes at a high price, and things don't neatly return to the status quo once it ends.

There's really a lot to like about this movie. The action is great, and the animation does it justice. Voice acting is pretty much top notch as well. Also, the movie doesn't waste any time with unneeded scenes, silly slapstick or irritating pop songs, like previous movies in the series would do. It's great that this movie pays attention to the often-overlooked mystical side of DC, and the fact that Batman isn't given top attention, even if the movie could easily justify it, is fantastic. I love Batman, but DC tends to be unable to show restraint with his presence.

The extras are on par to what these movies tend to offer. I am a bit sad that at some point they decided to include just 2 bonus cartoons from previous DC animation rather than 4, but the rest of the stuff is still interesting. Though I'm a bit puzzled to the inclusion of "sneak peeks" to a couple of movies that have been released years before. Also, it's curious that one of the features is dedicated to the team member with the least screen time while there's none dedicated to two of the most important ones.

In any case, I most definitely recommend this film. Probably not to children, though. They might get a kick out of the action scenes, but the general tone of the movie and the characters need a more developed mind to be appreciated. Not to mention that there are some things that might definitely scare away younger kids. Everyone else should check the film, particularly if you're into magic and sorcery.

A welcomed entry into the DC Animated Universe

Justice League Dark introduces the viewer to lesser known (but just as loved) mystical/magical heroes and anti-heroes such as John Constantine, Zatanna Zatara, Boston Brand (aka Deadman) and Jason Blood/Etrigan the Demon. The Justice League identifies a disturbing pattern of horrific crimes committed by citizens who are plagued by demonic hallucinations. The Batman, skeptical at the prospect of magic as the cause, soon finds his way to Zatanna, Brand & Constantine who lead the way to unraveling the mystery. Highlights of the story include: a brief origin story of Jason Blood and Etrigan the Demon that ties directly to the main story line of the movie, a well constructed (but not overwhelming) introduction to Zatanna Zatara and her journey to learn the extent of her magical powers, and a strong (and sometimes surprisingly funny) supporting role from the Batman. (See a rather amusing albeit brief moment between the Death Shrouds and the Batman early on in the story). Problematic points include: Matt Ryan's voice acting as Constantine (whom I consider an excellent live action portrayal of the role), The Swamp Thing's role in the narrative (at first powerful and perfectly brief but later reduced to an Incredible Hulk-like mindless fighter that is far too easily defeated), and finally the over-all depiction of magical spells as "Dr. Strange-esque" neon runes (a conceit that may be more contemporary and perhaps was done by DC first, but required further conceptual thought none the less). Another consideration is the seeming decline in the quality of the animation itself. As highlighted in the recent "Batman: The Killing Joke" DC animation has suffered a noticeable decline in quality since the 2014-2015 era of animations like "Batman: Bad Blood" "Batman Vs Robin" and "Son of Batman". All movies that highlighted technically fluid fight sequences and sharp somewhat detailed character designs. Justice League Dark feels clunky in many spots (especially when an irregular character like a demon or the Swamp Thing take the screen) and begs for more attention to detail. (See a clunky poker scene between Constantine and the Demons Three in the first act). This quality issue may be a direct result of the tight turn-around production schedule for these movies. If so, I (for one) would much rather wait a little longer for a tighter and more carefully animated movie than have the studio rush the product out the door. Despite these issues, the story is engaging whether or not you are familiar with the characters and is a nice departure from the standard Superhero story. I'm a recent fan of the Dark Universe stories and have been a long time fan of the Alan Moore Swamp Thing series and the Hellblazer line. Seeing these characters team up on screen for the first time was a treat for me and I do hope to see more installments in the future. I would recommend this movie to any animated action fan.

I loved this movie. While different than the other justice league movies, as it is much more violent, it centers more on other characters that are somehow connected to the supernatural. And then you have Batman, who needs their help to solve this problem, yet does not completely believe in the supernatural. Actually makes me want to buy the books. I do hope that they continue to make dark justice movies. Having said that there were a few times when the action is on constantine the quality of the animation seems to drop for a few frames, but only when he is on the screen. Very odd, but I still loved the movie.

これまで出番の無かった魔法系キャラがメインを張る今作、敵も味方も魔法を使うので、戦闘がこれまで以上に派手で見ていて楽しかったです。
話もキャラも映像も、キレイばかりでなくキタナイところがちゃんとあって、不思議な雰囲気でイイ。

コンスタンティンのゲスさも良かったし、スワンプシングのミステリアスさも良かったし、ザタナも可愛いです。パッケージではあまり可愛くないけど本編はちゃんと可愛い。
このパッケージがバットマン人気で売ろう感満載で「本当はそんなに出番無いんでしょ？」と穿って構えていたのですが、始終置いてきぼりで不思議現象に居合わせた一般人代表なバットマンが新鮮で見せ場もそれなりにあり、いい脇役という感じでした。

"名作が！名作が！"とか気にしないから純粋に単体で見て面白いDCアニメ教えて！と言われたら是非候補に入れたいところです。特にブレボのフェリックスが好きな人におすすめです。

Finally this film seems a long time in the making...Strange things are happening that leave the Justice League at a loss,so Batman reluctantly goes in search of John Constantine(voiced by Matt Ryan who played him in tv show) via Zatanna who is also a reluctant participant. The film is NOT suitable for younger kids as you can imagine John Constantine is a foul mouth,sarcastic,cynical but funny guy,who doesn't hold back on his thoughts and feelings. This film shoes how/who the J.L dark team comes together,learning to work as a team against an ancient evil,bent on world domination & destruction (aren't they always)...hopefully not the only film they do as they are a refreshing change from the usual J.L team. A great story,and a good edition to the JL team,but def has more adult themes. A good buy and great watch.

ただし、2017年7月5日に日本盤発売されるようなので、デジタル配信コードが欲しいとかでなく、待てるならそちらを選んだ方がいいかもしれない。そっちの方が安いし。
