“This gut-wrenching, poetic memoir reminds us that no life story can be reduced to the word ‘refugee.’" —New York Times Book Review

“A critical piece of literature, contributing to the larger refugee narrative in a way that is complex and nuanced.” —School Library Journal (starred review)

This profoundly moving memoir is the remarkable and inspiring true story of Sandra Uwiringiyimana, a girl from the Democratic Republic of the Congo who tells the tale of how she survived a massacre, immigrated to America, and overcame her trauma through art and activism.

Sandra was just ten years old when she found herself with a gun pointed at her head. She had watched as rebels gunned down her mother and six-year-old sister in a refugee camp. Remarkably, the rebel didn’t pull the trigger, and Sandra escaped.

Thus began a new life for her and her surviving family members. With no home and no money, they struggled to stay alive. Eventually, through a United Nations refugee program, they moved to America, only to face yet another ethnic disconnect. Sandra may have crossed an ocean, but there was now a much wider divide she had to overcome. And it started with middle school in New York.

In this memoir, Sandra tells the story of her survival, of finding her place in a new country, of her hope for the future, and how she found a way to give voice to her people.

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up—The greatest storytellers connect with readers through universal truths, and Uwiringiyimana tells her own profound story with clarity and honesty. After a heart-pounding cliff-hanger opening, Uwiringiyimana goes back in time to revisit her childhood in Uvira, a city in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Although occasionally interrupted by bouts of war and subsequent migration, her childhood was rich and fulfilling. However, everything changed during a stay at a refugee camp. The camp at Gatumba was attacked by the Forces for National Liberation, a militant rebel group—a deadly event that would forever alter Uwiringiyimana and her family. The resulting narrative is a powerful look at the family's move to the United States, the challenges of adjusting to a different culture, Uwiringiyimana's painful recognition of her trauma from the massacre, and, finally, the healing she experienced as she took ownership of her emotional needs. Throughout, readers will be able to relate to Uwiringiyimana's adolescent struggles of fitting in and her relationship with her parents as a new adult. The title is a critical piece of literature, contributing to the larger refugee narrative in a way that is complex and nuanced but still accessible for a YA audience. VERDICT This poignant memoir is a must-have for teen collections.—Hannah Ralston, Webster Public Library, NY

Review

“This gut-wrenching, poetic memoir reminds us that no life story can be reduced to the word ‘refugee.’ Uwiringiyimana weaves the pieces of her life into a fine tapestry that evokes deep empathy, even as it provides an excellent introduction for young readers to the political and economic climate in a conflict-ridden African region.” — New York Times Book Review

★ “The title is a critical piece of literature, contributing to the larger refugee narrative in a way that is complex and nuanced but still accessible for a YA audience. This poignant memoir is a must-have for teen collections.” — School Library Journal (starred review)

“As America’s doors threaten to shut against refugees, this memoir could not be timelier. Her ability to summon the chaos and terror is extraordinary, but then, so is she. [Uwiringiyimana] has emerged as a powerful spokesperson for the plight of the dispossessed.” — Booklist

“With compassion and perspicacity, Uwiringiyimana shares the journey through which she became a courageous advocate for her tribe and refugees everywhere: ‘This is my story.... I must keep telling it, until the international community proves.... that my family and all others are not disposable.’” — Publishers Weekly

“Sandra’s account of her transition to America is fully as engrossing as her family’s escape from their war-torn homeland, and her memories of trying to navigate American culture...will provoke consideration even with readers who look upon immigrant classmates and neighbors with indifference.” — Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books

“The politically and culturally complex picture of Africa that the author paints is welcome, and the complexities of black identity for recent immigrants versus that of diasporic black people are not often touched upon in YA literature.”   — Horn Book Magazine

“[A] story of tragedy, terror, survival, and hope. [Uwiringiyimana] becomes a powerful voice for many who are silenced: girls, women, and immigrants everywhere, refugees in particular. This hard-hitting autobiography will have readers reeling as it shows one young woman’s challenging path to healing.” — Kirkus Reviews

“A brave and honest story that puts a human face on the international refugee crisis-and asks us all to walk a mile in Sandra’s shoes.” — Patricia McCormick, author of Sold and Never Fall Down

“Sandra’s life story has profound power. From Africa to America, to the world-an inspiring tale and a riveting read.” — Joanna Coles, Chief Content Officer, Hearst Magazines

“In a world on fire, Sandra’s story of survival delivers essential truths and a message of peace and unity that speaks to us all.” — Tina Brown, founder and CEO of Tina Brown Live Media/Women in the World

It should be a NY Times Bestseller!!!! Everyone needs to read this!!!!
This book is hands down the most incredible, heart-wrenching yet so funny and genuine. I couldn't stop reading so I finished in a couple of hours. This is not a memoir of a war child but rather of a resilient young woman Sandra Uwiringiyimana. She was able to put into words what millions around the world have felt and experienced. I went from laughing out hard at the childhood stories to crying and then hardly breathing. Be prepared to laugh a lot and cry even harder. In the end, this book is about love in some ways. It's a journey filled with trials and triumphs, war and peace teaching us all that no matter what happens light will always drown darkness the way love trumps hate. Here's an excerpt (page 87) my favourite: " If only I had known that I would never see her again, I would have spent the years learning every curve on her face, studying those long eyelashes, memorizing the way her lips curled into a funny little twist when she was happy."

Young human rights activist, Sandra Uwiringiyimana shares her powerful heartbreaking memoir, How Dare the Sun Rise, of the sudden collapse of family life for her parents, Sandra and her six siblings. The family, Rwandans, considered a hated Banyamulenge minority, lived in the mountains of South Kivu, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Because of the wars and rumored wars, the family were stateless, and moved from place to place. They had settled in Uvira Province, a city in South Kivu, where the close-knit, loving family lived a peaceful life until, again, unrest started.

In 2004, the family were placed in a refugee camp in Gatumba, Burundi. There is where 10-year-old Sandra witnessed the rebel massacre of families, including her six-year-old sister, Deborah, cousins, and the shooting of her mother, brother, and aunt.

In 2006, Sandra’s father heard of a resettlement program initiated to help displaced persons. After numerous interviews, the entire family were approved and immigrated to Rochester, New York, in 2007.

The memoir explores Sandra’s mental and emotional struggle, her coming of age in a new society, defining herself counter to the cultural expectations of family and, navigating through the angst of her teens, and living in America. Some might question Sandra’s behavior in some instances, but I believe she suffered Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and guilt over Deborah’s death.

The family established a new life in America, but received no family therapy. Sandra did receive brief therapy while attending college. However, Sandra mentioned that culturally, the family does not speak of their loss or unhappiness; instead, they have a strong belief in the power of prayer.

We had the privilege of meeting this young woman at a social event and heard briefly about her book. It is well written and held my interest but what is “special” about her story is that it gives you a complete picture of her & her family’s life both before and after the senseless & brutal attack they endured, her long path to recovery. She goes on to let you know about the secondary trauma and difficulty of being given the chance for her & her family to immigrant to the USA. They had to endure months of examination to prove they ‘deserved’ the status of victims of ethnic violence to be relocated to a city, in a poor area without the cultural & emotional support they needed.
Her story doesn’t stop there however. She allows the reader to see her ongoing fight for personal recovery and how she is using it to become a spokesperson for both her own tribe and the cultural violence we often choose to ignore both in Africa & other parts of the world. Thank you Sandra for allowing me to understand part of your journey and recovery.
And finally, make note of her name because we will probably hear about her as a positive force in the future.

A story of hardship and overcoming. A story of pain and inspiration. Sandra achieved worldwide recognition at a young age and a platform to make a difference. May God bless her and her family and the other survivors of that horrific attack.

I read and interpreted this as a beautiful story of resilience, courage, hope, healing, and growth. I liked that there is an emphasis on education and how various educational experiences have impacted the author. This book is written in a more simple style than I usually read but I could not put it down. It was a gift for my teenage daughter, to help her learn more about other people, their struggles, how determination can help overcome adversity, and in the greater picture how we can relate and lean in to make a difference for ourselves, and others around us.

Sandra tells her story of surviving the Gatumba massacre as a child, and living to tell the tale. She walks us through every experience she faced from the injustice she faced before the massacre, her family escaping trouble, the horror of the massacre and her journey that followed. Though she faced extreme poverty and didn’t know if she could have a better future, the doors opened and she was resettled in the USA. The book is enlightening and shares the tales of another heinous crime against humanity that doesn’t get press. It’s a hard tale, but a moving one of hope, activism, and learning how to live again when you’ve been given a second chance. A beautiful memoir, an easy read. I would recommend this story to all.
