Editorial Reviews

Songwriter. Guitarist. Singer. Bandleader. At only 20 years of age, Marcus King's dazzling musical ability is on full display throughout The Marcus King Band, the young phenom's 2nd full-length LP and first for Fantasy Records. The album was produced by King's champion Warren Haynes, who expertly wraps the band's muscular live energy around a rising young songwriter of unusual clarity and depth.

It amazes me how many really good bands exist that are out touring and releasing excellent albums/cds that for some reason are not well known. The Marcus King Band is one of them. I’ve heard said that they are very popular in the southern parts of the country but where I’m from in the north east not as much. Too bad because people are not getting hip to some of the best music by far that’s out there today. Marcus King is one of the best guitar players I’ve ever heard and his band is stellar. His musical style can be compared to Derek Trucks or The Allman Brothers and particularly on The Marcus King cd you hear a little Chicago influence as well. Marcus has his own style of playing and a very soulful singing voice. There’s more up front soloing on this cd than his newer/newish cd, Carolina Confessions, which is an excellent effort as well. He weaves his soloing into the flow of the songs more on Carolina Confessions. On both albums his band gets plenty of room to show their stuff, which beside obvious bass and drums, includes keyboards and a horn section. The Marcus King Band is their second album. Their first album is called Soul Insight, which is more bluesy in style but excellent, too and there is an ‘EP’ called Due North that came out between The Marcus King Band and Carolina Confessions. My son and I are musicians, well he is, I’m a ‘hack’, lol and we know good playing when we hear it. We’ve seen Marcus open a show with The Tedeschi Trucks Band and he and his band really blew us away. We even got to meet them. Great show! We’re about to go see them, again this summer. Can’t wait! Well, I took a lot of time to tell you this but if you’re reading this just buy it and Carolina Confessions. You’ll thank me for it. No music collection is complete without ‘em and you’ll be listening to some of the best music you ever heard. Trust me.

much thanks to replacing a favorite artist/cd. My copy wore out!! Delivered copy was perfect and even tho cover was "scratched" ( already knew when ordered) the cd is perfection. I bought to replace my original, the cover scratch was meaningless. Now using my pristine cover to house my beautiful replacement cd..Marcus King is amazing and this seller really helped me keep my music rolling.

I saw the Markus King Band play live in Pittsburgh in June. Before the concert, I listened to a couple of their songs on Youtube and had heard one of their songs played on Pittsburgh's non-profit adult contemporary radio station, WYEP. In fact, WYEP sponsored the free outdoor concert. I enjoyed the concert so much I immediately decided to purchase their latest CD. The CD arrived within a few days and I have been enjoying it ever since. It is amazing to me that Marcus King, a 21 year old, is such an accomplished guitarist and song writer already. He has a distinctive bluesy voice that belies his young age. When I first heard the song "Rita is Gone" on WYEP, I pictured a much older, mature man. He has gathered a wonderful group of young, energetic and skilled musicians, and they feed off each other. Marcus King cites the Allman Brothers and Chicago as major influences. He likes a "big sound," and generates lots of energy and feeling in his music selections. If you like blues, tinged with soul and great guitar work, with horns and percussion to give the sound a modern feel, check out this CD.

Marcus King is truly a wonder. If you love phenomenal guitar playing in the vein of Duane Allman, Mick Taylor, Dickie Betts, Derek Trucks, Clapton, Warren Haynes, and Johnny Winter, try grown up child prodigy Marcus King. He has the perfect blues rock voice to top it all off. It doesn’t matter which album you choose - they are all great. I have not been this excited about a musician and band since I first heard the fabulous Derek Trucks. Marcus will blow you away.

    Such a great CD!

Marcus King is such an old soul - an amalgamation of the greatest blues, southern classic rock, and jam band heroes of the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s - yet brings that youthful glow that can appeal to a wide age range and will most definitely play an active roll in keeping analog music alive. There aren't many guitarists under 50 who can melt your face off, and Marcus King has quickly skyrocketed to the top of that list with the likes of Derek Trucks, Eric Krasno, and Gary Clark, Jr. You can definitely hear Warren Haynes' influence throughout this album (and not just his shredding on "Victoria") and it fills my heart with such joy to hear that Allmans/Mule/Hendrix/Vaughn style reincarnated in the form of fresh young talent. Marcus joins the long list of Kings who have illuminated blues rock throughout history, and he is certainly worthy of the crown. I cannot wait to see him live.

Typically a CD that doesn't sound the clearest would warrant lower than a 5 star. However, every song on here is amazing. Between Marcus King, Drerek Trucks, Warren Haynes and Marcus Kings band mates, all the songs have a great unique style. I have listened to this CD multiple times and I am not tired of it. Even my toddler is dancing in front of the speakers as I write this review.

Thank you to Marcus King and his band for taking a classic yet innovative style of music into our present and hopefully the future.

Right now I just heard a great Sax solo on track 7 and now a trumpet solo is going... I gotta stop writing and go listen!
