Product Description
With the fall of France, Great Britain stands alone against superior German forces. The Battle of Britain rages in the skies overhead and, with daily air-raids, the threat of invasion and defeat is palpable. For some of Great Paxford's women, the war throws off peacetime limitations, allowing them to flourish in unexpected ways. Some must deal with tremendous loss; some find searing moments of joy; while others tread difficult paths towards happiness amid the chaos and uncertainty enveloping the nation. As Britain finds itself increasingly beleaguered, relationships, friendships, and loyalties within the Great Paxford community will be tested as never before.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2018It has the depth, excitement, and engagement you'd want from any full length movie. The fact that this is a 12-episode TV show, and not a big-budgeted Hollywood extravaganza makes it truly amazing. Don't be frightened off by the fact that the sponsoring TV network, ITV, made an egregious error by cancelling the series after two seasons. That does not reflect on the show, but on the stupidity of the overpaid ITV executives.
Rest assured that while the cancellation of the series so early in its life is a disappointment, the two season that did air, and did make it onto Blu-ray, are stand-alone, and brilliant. You WILL be wanting more! But you will also be somewhat satisfied with what we can get, because what you get is amazing, complete in and of itself. You won't short-changed, as such, nor be missing critical pieces to enjoy all of that, "as is."
In North America viewers may find it comforting to know that thousands of Brits protested to ITV about their idiotic cancellation. The show is that good, and that beloved.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2023I have viewed seasons 1 and 2 and can't wait to see season 3. Great winter viewing. This could be a depressing topic, but it is done in such a way that you get the horrors of WW2 but you also see the human positive things that women can accomplish in very trying times. It is actually funny and heartwarming.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2020This series was so entertaining as I love movies from this time period. The only problem is that it ended so abruptly. I wanted it to go on and tell what happened and I learned the series was not going to continue. I am so glad that I bought it and and can watch whenever I want. It was one of PBS's best.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2019The WWII story line and actors are solid (similar to the level of Foyle's War), so the only disappointment is that this series was so suddenly discontinued despite being high quality. Perhaps the cost of that quality was the basis for ending the series so abruptly. It was very well received on both sides of the pond. I am thankful for the two seasons of it, and treasure how it portrayed families and strong women of that era.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2018I have seen this series on Public Broadcasting's Masterpiece Theater and liked it so this drama has now been added to my own collection. I never buy DVDs without knowing what the film is about---I have to like it enough to see it again and English Village culture and this historical period during the Second World War have always interested me. At this point I will say that series 2 resolves some issues but leaves you hanging over the outcome of a plane crash, the pending birth of a baby, Pat's attempted escape from her abusive husband, and---there is no series 3 to wrap those things up.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2022Good writing and good actors with some characters that you will love to hate. An excellent way to spend an evening and avoid the heat.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2017Have heard rumor that Season 2 will be the final season. What happened ? The ending in Season 2 literally is a major cliff hanger . Why in the world would they cut off the season this way with absolutely no resolve with all the characters if this was a planned end . Did they just decide last week after taping the conclusion of this season 2 ???Very disappointed if this is truly going to be how it is left. Bet I am not the one and only that feels this way.

The service could not have been better, the package arrived several days ahead of the promised delivery date. ! and was in sealed pristine condition! The second season of "Home Fires" was easily as well crafted in every respect as the first season. I'm only very sorry to find that the series will not be continuing, leaving several absorbing story lines unresolved. A sterling cast in believable situations with realistic problems with a country at war and many husbands and sons away at war! This charming series will be missed !
