- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2024I relate to this movie in a powerful way, because I lived half of my life under an oppressive regime in by the communists governed the beautiful country of Czechoslovakia. Like the enslaved people in this movie, we recognized the world “inside” and “outside.” Under such a regime, like in the movie, we were required to respect and feed the false sense of security and not question anything issued by authorities. If you did not, you were harshly punished. We were encouraged to spy on each other and help the state security apparatus. No wonder that many wanted to get outside, and I was one of them. If I were caught at the border when leaving with my future wife and 3 kids on the back seats, I could go to jail and lose everything. Silas and Nia in the movie wanted to escape to the Peninsula, I wanted to escape anywhere where freedom existed. I was sentenced in absentia for 3 years just for not returning from abroad.
Now the elites worldwide desire to govern equals like in this telling movie, seemingly having comfortable lives, but fully controlled and being productive. But the question is, was everything portrayed in this movie controlled by some elites, or brand-new culture has been created on the ruins of previous failed civilization? In such a culture everyone is watching others, and no one can societally solve it. Only individuals could resolve that for themselves by escaping as Silas and Nia were trying through forbidden discovered new love or as I did with my wife. Silas and Nia show us how powerful love can perhaps break any chain. Romeo and Juliette like story for sure can and will exist even in such depressing and restricting society as in the movie. The portrayal of the beginning of Silas and Nia’s love is highly erotic and explosively powerful. The movie after the gloomy first half becomes beautifully emotional. I cannot finish without mentioning a metaphysical or spiritual aspect. Were they doing genetic manipulation of the child (or fetus, you choose) in the mother’s womb, or were they messing up also with the soul? A soul enters a human body any time between conception and birth. Were they perhaps trying to create soulless people? Is it possible? Probably not. If you would like to see the movie and form your opinion, I would appreciate it if you would share it with me.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2016The story line was really good. Some kind of a major war happened that destroyed most of the planet Earth, much of it blamed on human emotions. We loved, we hated, we destroyed. So, the remaining civilized population decided that it's a good idea to rid human kind of emotions. There would still be jobs and activities for people to conduct themselves for survival and the overall societal good. However, to accomplish this, there is a certain amount of communism taking place. People are not allowed to live together or fall in love. Everyone must be individuals and are taught to report on those who break the laws of emotions, which is what communist China did in the first 40 years of its development except it was to report those who were speaking against the government or being political (which can be considered emotional to want democracy). In this movie, emotions is a disease. The cure is to prevent feelings for others. Not much different in the United States of requesting gay people to not be gay.
Equals seems to be a title that demonstrates the contradictions of equality. In a communist society, we want everyone to be equals, yet that equality is standards set by the government. However, in a democratic society, we also want every to be treated as equals, but that standard of equality is set by the people, but individuals such as gays have a hard time being themselves without persecution. It seems people suffer because we want everyone in society to be a reflection of ourselves as a society/government, but not be allowed to be ourselves as individuals, meaning anyone who deviates from the norm is a threat or a disease, and thus, must be controlled or cured.
Though this movie doesn't mention communism or gays or any theoretical social issues of today, this science fiction can easily be applied to today's social problems if you only open your minds to what the movie implies about human nature. This is why I think the movie is great in terms of story line, but I am critical of the two main actors in the movie. They tried to demonstrate their love for each other and the director did the best to prolong the love aspect of the characters, but I did not feel that the actors put their all in demonstrating how deeply in love these two characters are even though it was understood. That's the only reason I gave one less star, because the actors did not fully show their passion for each other, or the director did not do enough to let them express what two people's true love should be like on screen.
