- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2025A daring film about a bitter winner. Took guts to make, but worth it. Not every actress would take on such an obnoxious, unlikeable character and pull it off. Kudos!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2016From what I saw in the trailers, my sort of tagline to family and friends about this movie was that the main character was a "human female version of Bender" (from Futurama); her name: Hope Ann Greggory - Hope drinks, she's self-centered, she's somewhat sexualized, and she swears like a sailor. These traits put her at odds with her newfound "apprentice", a bubbly, enthusiastic wannabe of Hope.
For people looking for a synopsis, allow me to summarize this movie as best I can: An ex-athlete named Hope Ann Greggory was injured in a horrific foot injury/accident in an event in the Olympics, but despite the crippling injury she was adamant about finishing her event. She didn't win the gold medal; only the bronze (thus the title), but her determination in the face of disaster made her a local hero in her hometown. She's been riding the glory train for a long time, but a new athlete appears that could threaten Hope's status and bring her down a tier, so to speak, so Hope schemes to rig her competition for failure so as to stay the alpha in town and soak up everybody's attention.
"The Bronze" was really funny, despite what critics say. I guess they were members of the F.A.P, the Federation of Annoying Parents (there's a point when Hope just slings slang on a stage in a mall, with tons of little kids present), or they just didn't understand how Hope's profane nature made her who she is. It gave me great laughs - Hope's a running riot. Kind of like the fictional Neil Patrick Harris persona from Harold & Kumar.
I do want to stress one last time that Hope is really vulgar, and can teach you the ABC's of cursing with sexual innuendos added in, but she gets so creative in the movie that it becomes impossible not to laugh at some of the stuff she says and does. So if you're some sort of weirdo who moans in agony upon hearing any "naughty" words, steer clear from "The Bronze"; if you're actually normal and have some sort of resistance, that shouldn't cause you any harm.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2024While her attitude is quite entertaining in this movie, it felt a bit defeatist. She does grow however, as any good tragedy should. I would cringe at how mean she was, to strangers, townies, fans, and even to her father.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2017The older I get (I'm 40) and the more I experience of life's highs and lows (more low than high lately), the more I gravitate to these type of quirky, offbeat, indie "dramedies". The stories and characters just feel more real, human, and relateable than most Hollywood stuff. Right up my alley. Its like they opened up a new world to me and made me realize its ok to just be myself, not some "normal", soulless, successful, macho, "alpha male" cliche. Highly flawed but basically good hearted people just trying to do their best, in their own messed up way, to make sense of and survive this Type A, capitalist, Trump-loving society and scary world of "normal" people and "grown-ups" ::shudder::. Sign me up. My kind of people.
Related to the protagonist more than a little bit (even though I'm a dude, sue me, haha). Also to Thomas Middleditch's character - man, he's carved out quite a nice for himself playing nerdy, "loveable loser" guys with a heart of gold, hasn't he? And speaking of heart, I've noticed everyone keep saying how ballsy or crass this movie is with all its crude humor. And it has that in spades, don't get me wrong. But what really sold me on this movie is its heart is just as big. So I can see what drew producers The Duplass Bros (big fan of theirs) to the project. And I know this society is ultra-competitive and all (no wonder she walked away from that pressure...I did, too), but what's so bad about 3rd place anyway? ::shrug:: Also Haley Lu Richardson is quite easy on the eyes :) Anyway, so if anyone out there (of all ages) has ever felt different from the herd, ever felt lost, alienated, or like they don't belong in this world, I'd definitely recommend this movie to you, my fellow misfit and kindred spirit :) If you agree with my review at all, you can mostly find me these days at twitter dot com/ShyLivesMatter Peace :)
