As with the "twofers," TODAY - MY WAY / NANCY - NATURALLY and WELCOME TO MY LOVE / EASY, these two wonderful albums are offered in mono. I happen to know that the stereo masters for all six of these original albums exist, so I don't know why the so-called remastering was done using the mono mixes. All of the songs from these records that got released as singles, or which have turned up on other Nancy Wilson anthologies I've heard in stereo, and they are generally better mixes. This having been said, the mono sound on all of these recently released double-album CDs is perfect. Although I love Nancy singing in almost any musical setting, what's nice about the mono mixes is that all the attention is more centered on Wilson's unique, glorious voice. The recording quality is not at all muddy, and the instrumentation, from horns and flutes to keyboards and violins, is very clean and full, sounding 3-D, only front to back, rather than floating between left and right. Achieving this amount of depth in a mono recording is impressive. All six Nancy Wilson albums in this series are from her most fruitful period, the 1960s, a time when it was not uncommon for a major artist to release two or three LPs in a year (and even have enough in the can to be released all these decades later as bonus tracks, some of which are, by the way, heard here in stereo). Wilson is quoted in the liner notes included with one of these titles that she loved working that way -- and she was missing it -- walking into a studio with all of the arrangements worked out in advance, and nothing left to worry about other than singing well, in real time, with live musicians - imagine that! Both of the albums presented here are good, but LUSH LIFE also happens to be one of Wilson's best, most solid collections of songs. The title track is its centerpiece, but the whole album is masterfully done, with tasteful arrangements, neither too "pop" or too "easy listening" for those who prefer Nancy's jazzier side, but not so jazzy as to put off those who like their blues with a spoonful of sugar. In short, a perfectly balanced combination of sophisticated pop and cool jazz. LUSH LIFE is Nancy at the top of her game, and although the stereo mixes are magnificent, I was surprised at how effective these recordings are in mono, even in my Bose headphones!

This CD consists primarily of two LPs, Just for Now (1967) and Lush Life (1968). I've not seen Just for Now on CD until this release, but Lush Life was released on CD a number of years ago. Both LPs were originally released on Capitol and produced by Dave Cavanaugh, who did a fair amount of work producing for Frank Sinatra. So, there is no skimping in musicianship. The arrangements are by three very talented masters of the craft: Billy May, Oliver Nelson, and Sid Feller.

As the cover indicates, these songs are in mono rather than stereo (with one exception). If you are prone to avoid mono, you might want to think again if you have doubts about the sound reproduction. The fidelity is full, the mix is pristine, and Ms Wilson's voice is where it should be, right front and center and crystal clear. The instruments are not buried in the mix. In short, the sound is outstanding. If you are an audiophile, be aware that on a few of the songs, there is some audible tape hiss, but it is not so obtrusive as to detract from the enjoyment for most listeners. The CD insert states that the original mono tapes were used. I assume that they mean original mono mix-down masters as these were recorded in stereo. In any event, the sound reproduction is superb. Also, the liner notes are interesting and informative.

I've always been a Nancy Wilson fan. She is such a musical singer. Her performances never seem less than sincere, i.e., she always gives her best in interpreting and expressing the lyrics. If you are also a fan, don't overlook this release. Recommended!

Wonderful essential recordings for all true jazz-vocal/song stylist fans. When I was a little boy, I always asked my mother to repeat the ending to *Mercy Mercy Mercy at the *end of Side One, before she turned the album over. (Otherwise informative liner notes get this minor *tracking detail wrong, but there are pictures of the original LP back-cover and the record labels included in the booklet.) Bottom line is that I am overjoyed that Just For Now (and Easy) have finally received hi-quality reissues! (Hope enough copies are being made to last through the Christmas-gifting season) Excellent!

The wonderful sound of her voice

This review has nothing to do with the quality of these albums, their arrangements, or of the great Nancy Wilson's performance on them. As always, she is in splendid voice & the production is top notch. Nearly all of Nancy Wilson's Capitol albums have from the late 50's to the early 70's have recently been re-issued in 2-fers by the wonderful audiophile label Bear Family. Unfortunately all of these CDs only offer the mono mixes. Why? Why even bother re-issuing any of these albums that were originally recorded in splendid stereophonic sound by the wonderful engineers at Capitol Records if you are only going to give us them in MONO?!? Fortunately the cover art warns the buyer of this before one gets home & gets POed over the mono mix on offer here. I am so tired of re-issues of classic stereo albums in mono. If ya ain't gonna give us them in stereo, don't waste our time, or yours.
