Product Description
Hardworking mother and widow, Frances Lacey (Kathy Bates, Misery) is just trying to make ends meet when she s fired from her job at a local potato chip company. Adding insult to injury, her son Shayne (Edward Furlong, Terminator 2: Judgment Day) is brought to her door by the police for stealing change from local payphones. Deciding it s time for a fresh start, Frances and her six children pull up stakes in Los Angeles and move to rural Idaho. In search of a better life, Frances and her children (whom she dubs the Lacey Clan) spot an unfinished house and decide to do whatever it takes, no matter the challenges and adversity, to buy the property and build a home of their own. A Home of Our Own, directed by Tony Bill (My Bodyguard) from a screenplay by Patrick Duncan (Mr. Holland s Opus), co-stars Soon-Tek Oh (The Man with the Golden Gun), Melvin Ward (Battling for Baby) and Michael Flynn (Stripes).

- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2024My mother has been looking for this movie for years she had it on VHS it got lost over the years she has already watched the DVD two times BIG thank you to the seller my mother is very happy 😊
- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2024This is a feel good movie and one I tend to watch about once a year And it still makes me cry. You can feel such emotion in the acting and you feel so sorry for the family and they are so independent and try to make it on their own. It’s just Beautiful and it really makes you realize how good you have it
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2019If you're offended by swearing (no F bombs, but plenty of SOB's and G-D's), don't bother watching the movie, as you will be offended, but unlike a lot of the current movies where every other word is a profanity, this just sounded like a normal "unchurched" family back in the day. And IF it is actually based on a true story, the heroin (a young widow with six kids to raise on her own) must have been some kind of amazing woman. No, she wouldn't win any congeniality prize, and at times she was downright mean to her kids, but she had a vision and refused to let anything get in the way of that. Even her staunch refusal to take charity in any form was refreshing. And before the holier-than-thou climb on the nearest soapbox to say she was "prideful" at the expense of her poor, abused children, think of the education she gave her kids in how to survive and succeed. IF this was a true story, I'm guessing the epilog could have told that the kids all became someone--did something with their lives that mattered. This isn't a comedy; it's real life for a poor family who stuck together through everything and came out the other side having learned something along the way.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2019Perhaps those who cannot relate to the characters or situation will not enjoy the movie, perhaps your bubble is too far removed to understand the "plot" or significance of this classic.
It's a great movie, you can watch over and over, reminds me to keep pushing, not be afraid to allow others to help, and reminds me that sometimes a hard life may be behind that faint tired smile of a stranger. Shows also how far we have came in such a short time as a society with sexual harassment, teacher-student bullying, and welfare assistant for people who actually do need it.
Watch with an open mind and remember this is how some folks do/did/will probably grow up. We watch this several times a month and it never fails to make you laugh and cry.
Most of the main characters have good acting and memorable lines, with lots of ups and downs. Typical Kathy Bates and her superior acting is not lacking, her facial expressions and her eyes can sometimes instantly tell you what she's thinking, like you know her character personally. The whole casting seemed to be perfect.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2008When I was little, my mother would pack up the Packard and load us kids in the back seat.
She's bring along a jar of peanut butter and a loaf of bread in case we got hungry. And she'd
drive cross country to meet my dad in whatever port he had been stationed.
Once, during a blizzard, my older sister changed a rather rank diaper on my little brother. RAther
that travel with the nasty thing in the car, she threw it out the window. When we got to the next town,
Mom got out and discovered that the diaper had frozen solid to the side of the car.
A Home of Their Own, took me back to those days when you didn't expect much but hoped for a warm
bed and something to eat. It takes the view back to a time when women were tough because they had to be.
A lot of men were off to war and women kept the home fires burning. In this case, Kathy Bates finds herself
a single mom, trying to build a "home of their own" for her five young kids. The movie humbles you and reminds
you that life in the early 40's and 50's required imagination.
Buy it for yourself and your grandkids. It's exciting and sad and offers us all a valuable lesson.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2017"A Home of Our Own" is based on a true story and released in 1993. Kathy Bates plays the role of Frances lacey, a hardworking widow and mother of six children. The year is 1962 and looking to find a better life, she moves her family ,by way of a beat up old car, from Los Angeles California to the small town of Hankston Idaho. There she barters with a resident widower for an unfinished, one room, skeleton of a house on a few acres of land that are almost in the middle of nowhere, and proceeds to finish building the house and live a family life as normally as possible. It has the usual heart tugging and heart warming scenes, hard luck scenes, hard lessons learned the hard way scenes and people coming together to help each other out scenes. There are a few instances where the dialogue is stunted and the acting is stiff, but all in all, it's a good, heart warming family film and worth the buy.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2016Cute movie. My boyfriend was going crazy trying to find a dvd copy of this movie which I'd never even heard of. I looked online to try & find it & it was impossible or expensive. The movies I did find were ridiculously over priced & I wasn't all that interested in seeing it. I eventually found it for rent on Amazon for $2.99 & I thought that was totally worth it. After I saw the movie I decided it was totally worth the $2.99. It was a cute sweet old movie & it's just upsetting that people are selling it for $80 so that was probably the only time I'll get to see it. If you've never seen it I highly recommend taking the time & just sitting down & watching it. Unless you've got the money then by all means go spend the $80 & buy the dvd

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally have it on dvd in good quality
Great purchase! We’ve been trying to get this on dvd for years, at first when we pressed play it was dubbed in Spanish but when we went back to the menu there was an option to turn it on english audio and deactivate subtitles so it worked perfectly with no problems.

Can't go wrong choosing ANY movie with Kathy Bates. This is a sweet and touching story of struggle, determination and pride. All the actors, including the kids did a great job. Highly recommend.
