- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2016Platform: Xbox OneEdition: Deluxe EditionVerified PurchaseVery minor spoilers below. I won't spoil any plot points, but if you don't want to know anything at all, well maybe you shouldn't be reading reviews.
This game is incredible. The combat system is amazing, there is tons to do, the story is fantastic and emotional, and it's chock full of some of the coolest moments in gaming.
The combat takes a bit to get used to, but once you do it's fast and fluid, while remaining the strategy the series is known for. The difference here is you have to make split-second decisions. That is, unless you turn on Wait Mode, which pauses the game in the middle of combat whenever you stop moving, and gives you a more tactical view of the combat. Personally I've only used Wait Mode once in my 100+ (and rising) hours of gameplay, but it will be perfect for those who like to slow it down a bit.
The story itself is relatively short. Honestly, it could probably be beaten in 20-30 hours easily if you run straight through. That being said, I beat it at 68 hours of game time, since I did so much side stuff. You have side quests, hunts, extra dungeons, and some other things to do on the side. Some of the side quests can get a bit boring, but for the most part they are not. One person has you go collect a dog tag from a spot on the map and bring it back. Pretty boring, but you usually get good items from him. On the other hand, there are a few cool base-infiltration stealth missions that reminded me of Metal Gear Solid. That is, if Snake could teleport. Hunts are simple "go here, kill this" missions. Hunt enemies are tougher than your stock standard enemies, and may have some variations. They also yield higher rewards in the form of money, experience, and items. Some may find these tedious as there are a LOT of them but I find them interesting. It doesn't take long to get to them, and the fights can be tough and rewarding. The extra dungeons are always awesome, and the level designers for this game need to be getting paid a lot. All of the dungeons in the game are designed insanely well, even the couple I hated to go through. A few of them are really tough, but they're all really good looking back. After you beat the game, nine more dungeons unlock. One is a secret platforming-and-puzzles-only dungeon with literally zero enemies inside of it that is hard to find if you don't know where to look or how to get there. It's honestly one of the toughest things I've ever done in a video game. I spent three and a half hours in there and wanted to rip my hair out by the end of it because it was so frustrating and stressful. Again, though, the design was fantastic when I look back at it. The other eight are the exact opposite, dungeons where all you do is fight. Go down some stairs, go into a room, fight some monsters. Do this a *LOT* of times. And they are TOUGH. Great for completionists and fans who want to do everything. More bosses unlock in the wild after the game is beaten as well. Some other side things include chocobo racing, fishing (which is surprisingly deep), and a semi-hidden colosseum where you can bet on fights between monsters and daemons for some pretty sweet rewards.
The story is amazing if you really get into it. I highly recommend watching the Kingsglaive movie and the Brotherhood anime before playing the game for more backstory, but this isn't necessary. There isn't much I can say about the story without spoiling it, so I won't say much. The story is fantastic and emotional, and I found myself getting really attached to the characters within it. Each of the four main characters fills effectively a different stereotype, which will draw each person who plays the game to one of them. The characters felt like real people to me a lot of the time, this only being broken up by some repeated voice lines that can get annoying. That being said, there are a lot of different lines they say and the reactions to specific things going on around them are fantastic. The voice actors were given a bit of freedom to make it feel authentic so there aren't any jokes lost in translation or anything like that. The story itself starts off simple but slowly gets more complex and interesting. Towards the end of the game, you're cannonballing through wondering WHAT is going on and just knowing that you want more. It all feels insanely important and it gets incredibly intense and awesome the further you get in.
This game has several moments that, if transferred over to almost any other game, would each individually be the coolest moment in most games. Part of why I think the story is short was because they put a lot of resources into making pretty much every moment of the main story awesome. Massive set pieces and moments that led to me saying "wow" and several astonished expletives more than in any other game I have ever played. The summons, the plot twists, the events, the bosses, everything forms together in ways that consistently blew my mind. Actually take the time to understand exactly what is happening around you and look at everything, and your mind will be blown as well.
In all, Final Fantasy XV is one of the greatest games I have ever played in my life. It legitimately made me laugh, cry, and everything in between. It breathes some much-needed life into a fantastic series that had unfortunately started to lose its way. This game stands up with games like Ocarina of Time and Skyrim for me and I can't wait for more. Thank you, Square Enix, for this masterpiece of a game.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2016Platform: Xbox OneEdition: Deluxe EditionVerified PurchaseI got to play this for a few hours and I was blown away. The last FF game I played was ten and I haven't touched them since because I didn't want to ruin that memory. After seeing the commercials for it and watching trailers online I was hooked and had to buy it. I was not mistaken with my feelings after the long install and required patch. The attention to detail is mesmerizing, going into the true depth of the series. Even as far off locations seem in the game, they are places you can reach and visit. The draw distance is epic! The wars-long-past devastation of the land seems just beyond the horizon and I can't wait to visit. At first It seemed overwhelming the controls that I have to memorize but after an hour I started getting the hang of it and doing well in combat. I do miss the turn based combat, but it was very unrealistic. You can do a traditional wait and plan system, but I haven 't figured that out yet. I'm having too much fun with the high action attack sequences and fluid motions of the characters. Along with the action system, they have improved the look of the world to match that like our own real world with cars moving about, sign posts, guard rails and buildings. There is a lot going on under the hood also that I can't wait to get into, such as the ability point system, customizations, photo sharing and equipment. There are tongue in cheek moments are included, paying homage to the history of FF, such as at the camp scene you can see the characters in a stat window with their true 8-bit stylized look and the traditional 'play out' music from FF1 which blew me away. Speaking of which the soundtrack is terrific and putting in the 'Stand By Me" song at the beginning was passionate and well placed.
All together I'm excited to get back to this new world for another round of discovery and enchantment. If you enjoyed past selections such as 7 or 10, then go ahead and get this running on your machine! I'm pleased with the production value and put my seal of approval on this fine product.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2024Platform: Xbox OneEdition: Deluxe EditionVerified PurchaseThis is the real deal, I was scared at first this wasn’t going to be a new sealed copy, but it was indeed. My copy off FFXV Deluxe Edition come new and sealed. It came with the Deluxe Edition steel cover case, the game, extra DLC downloads and a movie. Very very happy with the product. Great for any Final Fantasy Collection.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2016Platform: Xbox OneEdition: Deluxe EditionVerified PurchaseProblems with this game started with late shipping, I read that a lot of people had issues with the shipping of this game. Next I tried to install this game on my Xbox one console which would not go past 4GB off the disk.
Purchased an Xbox one S, tried to install the game with the same results. Both Xbox systems claim the disk is dirty or damaged. Disk looks clean and has no scratches, scuffs, marks of any kind. No idea never had a defective game before especially when getting a deluxe version of it.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2017Platform: Xbox OneEdition: Deluxe EditionVerified PurchaseIf you have someone in your life that you love and they love to play games and if you ever want to spend time with them Don't buy them this game!!! It's so freaking awesome you will never see them again!! I bought this as a Christmas present for my husband and I haven't seen him since. He has turned our bedroom into his gaming lair. This game is so awesome he has not shaved, he barely goes to work, I have bring him food or he will starve. This game is so amazing and fun and wonderful, that real life seems meaningless and life outside the game is now super lame. I'm currently looking into therapy group for FFAA( final fantasy addicts anonymous) for my husband so he can rejoin society. So all in all this is the best video game ever made.it is in fact too good. Too good.
