- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2017Let’s be honest. Apart from the hypocrisy of feminist manifesto of defying patriarchal, patroilineal views on ideal feminine beauty, being beautiful can be a confidence factor, and it can make a world of difference to a woman. That’s why there is a myriad of self-help books on beauty, most of which I find insipid, redundant, and banal on the basis of superficiality and presumptuousness of the subject matter that in fact deserves of a certain respect and serious approaches. Hence Pretty Girl by Bronwen Skye whose beauty advice is rooted in psychology and neuroplasticity in the form of Law of Attraction.
The author tells us that acting like a pretty girl is the elemental It, even if you don’t think you are. This could be met with a wave of casual scoffing, for we have heard of this mass advice from self-proclaimed beauty advisors. But Skye is different in the aspect that she sets forth details on discovering your beauty buried inside by practicing Law of Attraction which are comprised of: (1) Affirmation of what you want to achieve (i.e., feeling pretty no matter what); (2) Appreciation of what you already have even though you don’t recognize it; and (3) Visualization of the Real Confident, Pretty You. In fact, these factors are scientifically proven as the effects of neuroplasticity, the brain’s forming and rewiring of neurons that continue until we die. In other words, what we think all the time can become a solid reality, as Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “A man is what he thinks about all day long.”
To elucidate, this mind-control mantra relates to quantum physics. Affirmations are positive statements constructed by our intuitive mind (System 1) and believed by the conscious mind (System 2). Affirmations are like partly mantras and partly magical spells. But they are not the products of some obscure fad quasi-religious chants. In fact, affirmations are part of a very profound psychological process that occurs in your mind. As you repeat them, they become “entrenched” in your subconscious mind, and when it happens, you will be transformed or morphed into whatever or whomever you like to be. For example, Aristotle once said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence is, then is not an act, but a habit.” All the aforesaid is a testament to the effect of the law of affirmation, which links right back to the subject of the book of finding a pretty girl in you struggling to be manifested.
Skye’s writing style is simple, unpretentious, straight to the point, and persuasive. This is what I call truly intelligent writing in which the author’s thoughts and opinions are logically coherent without a display of magniloquent vocabulary to wow the readers. Reading this book would give the readers a sense of gaining a set of magical spells from a white witch who proffers practical and effective methods of affirmation that is both scientifically and psychologically proven to work in reality.
Interested in this topic or not, this is a read worthwhile to be chewed and digested for a refreshment of your soul. Practicing Law of Affirmation on the grounds of neuroplasticity does not only have to be focused on physical beauty but also on any area of your life you want to improve for betterment because you are indeed worth it.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2016I read this book because I was curious about it. It is filled with practical advice and tips on grooming and accentuating your best features. Toward the end of the book, the author did include other things that affect our perception of beauty, such as smiles, manners, consideration, attitude, and confidence. I would have liked to have seen, as my mother always said, the "Pretty is as Pretty does" segments more prominently toward the front of the book. Then the author could have gone into practical detail about maximizing our potential. SO, don't quit reading too soon. You will get to the meatier parts! My other bone to pick is the author's using the California girl as her standard for beauty. I guess we all have regional biases, because I think Southern girls can go head to head with California girls any day. The Southern girls I know may have even higher beauty standards! This book is worth the quick read it is. It will be especially helpful to late teens/young professionals. PS--I agree with her assessment of redheads. I was born one, and now in my 60's, plan to stay that way!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2016I really enjoyed reading this book!
I must say, the first couple of chapters seemed like the author is quite superficial and I wasn't sure if this book was for me. Luckily, I kept reading, and it just got better and better!
She discusses in depth what we need to do, to be pretty physically. She covers subjects like: grooming, hair, makeup, skin care, diet and exercise, and clothing. I really enjoyed the chapter on “Fashion Mistakes,” where the author explains why we shouldn’t make the fashion mistakes she mentions.
The chapters “Class” and “Attitude” are about inner beauty, and how we can be even prettier by being kind, respectful, and making others feel valued.
This book is full of useful, down to earth, sensible advice presented in an easy to understand, logical manner. I absolutely loved the tone of the book, the author’s humor, sincerity, and obvious expertise.
I highly recommend it to all young women who want to take good care of themselves, focus on or find their positive traits, and find a style that enhances their natural, unique beauty.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2018The author spend a good deal of time promoting the vegan lifestyle (be prepared for having The China Study shoved down your throat). She has also drunk the MLM DoTerra Kool-aid and pushes a pyramid scheme company for essential oils. BTW - there is no such thing as 'therapeutic grade' for essential oils, it is a marketing term completely made up and not endorsed by anyone but the companies shilling that products.
This book reads more like a thinly veiled ad for DoTerra products and young teens looking for advice may not realize they are being 'had' by a pyramid scheme company. I had no negative things to say about veganism (having been vegan before), but to maintain that lifestyle properly requires money to eat well and proper, something most teens and young adults cannot do.
The author also states that women and young adults should invest in hair extensions if they don't have hair below the shoulders already or have shorter hair. I have a lot of issues with this advice. I just cut my hair from below the shoulders to bob length and I've received WAY more compliments on the shorter style than the longer one. I was keeping my hair long just for the sake of having it long, but it didn't suit my face nor body frame. You don't need long hair to 'look pretty'.
The more I read this book the more archaic and insulting I found the information to be.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2018This is a very BASIC book. Seems it is written for young girls about basic grooming, eating healthy, clothing and attitude. Great for a middle/high school girls.

5.0 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air
I really enjoyed this book and am grateful to the author. Excellent style tips and several chapters about the inner games, so it is not just about external beauty. Some of the advice resonated with dale carnegies classic book "How to win friends..". I am a woman in my 40's so don't think that this book is only for young girls. It has good advice for any age, and can be applied to men also. This book is a short read but well worth the purchase and I highly recommend.

Outdated and boring, waste of time reading to be honest about it.

1.0 out of 5 stars BAD ADVICE!
Absolute load of rubbish! i chose this for a young girl, which was not at all suitable. If you did all the things in this book you wouldn't have time for anything else! I've never read such a load of rubbish in my life. The author i feel doesn't know what the word pretty really means? With white blonde hair and bright red lipstick? I feel she could do with a few lessons? This is the type of book that makes teenagers believe there is something wrong with themselves, like their too fat, not pretty enough etc.etc. No, i didn't like this book at all, i could have written better myself! 5.0 out of 5 stars Honest and Refreshingly Different.
I never usually write reviews on Amazon, naughty, I know but I'm a busy mum. But this is, so so well written and even for an 'old timer' at knowing many beauty tricks and also the benefit of being a Makeup Artist, I still found much in here that had me pleasantly surprised. And it's refreshing to find such a brilliant vocabulary utilised in a guide such as this; a really enjoyable read and one I will re-read when I have the time. Thanks!
