8 customers mention "Finish quality"5 positive3 negative

Customers have mixed opinions about the finish quality. Some find it a great exterior finish and say it's the best oil-based wood finish they've found. Others mention that the satin finish doesn't look good, looks like it needs more coats, and stays tacky for a long time, making it easy for insects to get stuck in it. The satin Marine Finish comes out blotchy with brush streaks throughout.

Best sealer/waterproofer I have used

Best sealer/waterproofer I have used
Used this with the Waterlox original sealer as recommended by the website and was more than happy at the final product. This obviously can be used on its own but I was finishing a wood bathroom countertop so I wanted to complete "system". It waterproofed my counter to where water just beads on top without seeping through the finish. I was quite impressed. With the sealer you get a slight bit glossier finish but when you add this product, it brings it down to a satin finish. My countertop is 30 year old oak planks, glued together and stained with a vinegar/steel wool stain that acts with the tannin in the wood, hence the darker color. If I did not stain prior, the waterlox would have created a darker golden color on the oak. Great product!!

GREAT PRODUCT. WORKS WELL AFTER SEVERAL APPLICATIONS. LOOKING FORWARD TO SEE IF IT STANDS UP TO OUR WINTER HERRE IN NEW HAMPSHIRE. CAUTION...ONLY USE OUTSIDE OR IN EXTREMELY WELL VENTILATED SPACE WHEN APPLYING.

Waterlox Marine is a great exterior finish. I have used it on several projects. The last
project is a Japanese Garden Bench made out of Quatersawn White Oak. The satin finish brings out the rays and flecks Quatersawn Oak is known for. Easy to apply. Make sure that the product is put on with the recommended coverage. If you put on less then the recommended coverage, you will see thin areas after it dries. When used with one Sealer coat, and two coats of the Marine finish, my bench should be protected for a good while.

This is by far the best exterior varnish I have used. I used it first on a wooden canoe that I built. however, for outside furniture, it provided the best protection of any product I have used. I marked it down on ease of use, and value for money. Why? Varnish by it's nature requires care in applying, not like polyurethane. Also, it is expensive, but in my view, worth it.

Reviews indicate this is the cat's meow of marine varnish. Based on application, it is not. Very watery so quickly runs off any surface other than pool-table level. Bubbles. Very slow to dry - 30+ hours on warm (75-85 F) moderately humid days (it does tend to be humid near the water where boats live !!). Stays tacky so long you are sure to get insects stuck in it. Leaves gaps where the surface tension pulls it away from some spots, forcing 2-3 coats. I did a lot of research before buying but this is not a usable product in the real world. Maybe if you keep your boat in Arizona this would be a good product?

I brushed the first of the coats on (after sealer coats of course), and it was quite thicker than expected. The final coat i Sprayed with an HVLP after thinning 25% and it went on in 4 passes over a few minute period to create a "wet" coat. Couldnt have been smoother if I had tried. Flawless Matt finish to the Walnut.
