- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2024I would rather have a plastic jewel case than a paper one. I guess that’s just another one of those things of the past and I’ll have to learn to live without.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2024Early Pink Floyd with Sid Barrett. Sounds much different than later Floyd post Barrett but a good sample of their earlier work.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2013I first heard Pink Floyd in college in 1971. At the time their newest albums found the band in an experimental phase, trying to discover their sound. A few years later they found mainstream success, though I tend to prefer the albums before that happened. As time went on, I went on to other kinds of music.
This album was not among my favorites at the time. It seemed primitive, a bit far out for my understanding. I heard it a few times but spent more time with Relics, Ummagumma, Meddle, Atom Heart Mother.
But now as I revisit all of Pink Floyd's albums, this one stands out as a classic, and definitely one of their best, while being nothing at all like what followed. With three of the four members of the later, commercially successful group, this one differed because of the band leader of the time, Roger Keith "Syd" Barrett, who wrote the songs and gave the band its unique sound.
This album, along with the first five tracks on a CD known as "The Early Singles" that came in the box set (and are also on the 2007 3-CD edition reissue of this album), and one track on Saucerful of Secrets, is all we have of Barrett's Pink Floyd. Barrett gradually withdrew from the band, but in the transitional, experimental phase that followed (before "Dark Side), he left a lingering influence.
Barrett was experimenting heavily with LSD during the time this music was made. He was going down a road of psychedelic music that had not been traveled much before, making it up as he went along, and (mis)using ordinary instruments to get the sounds he wanted, since there were not a lot of special effects at that time. The band was performing in London in 1966, perhaps influencing John Lennon, who is seen at a video of one of their performances. Sadly, he also seemed to be ever more disconnected with reality as he developed some kind of mental illness.
Art can be very interesting when produced by people who are a bit unbalanced, and this album is an excellent example of that. The music is complex in its chords, rhythms, and changes. The subject matter is unusual to say the least, and certainly it was for the time.
As I listen to it again now, nearly 50 years after it was recorded, it sounds very fresh and clear. Some is no doubt because of the excellent new remastering, but a lot of it is the music itself.
This is a unique album, anything but a cliche, and it deserves a serious listen from any serious listener of 60s or psychedelic music. It bears little resemblance to what Pink Floyd later became, and yet you can hear their roots in this recording.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2005"The Piper At the Gates of Dawn" is the one Pink Floyd cd where original member Syd Barrett is in command. Shortly after the release of this cd he would flame out and disappear from the group, which was then "taken over" by Roger Waters, and later by David Gilmore. This cd is an acquired taste - but for those who can get into Barrett's bent take on music the songs here are a real treat. Of particular note are the first and last cuts - "Astronomy Domine" which is weird beyond belief, but excellent (as is the live version appearing on "Ummagumma") and "Bike", an equally weird love song. The song between these bookends are consistently interesting, particularly the instrumental song "Interstellar Overdrive". If you are a fan of later period Pink Floyd give this cd a listen or two - you are likely to come around.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2005This is the first Pink Floyd, and this release in particular is what seperates the regular fan from the "die hard" fan. I've heard almost equal doses of praise and criticism for the Syd Barrett era, and I just let it be what it is, Pink Floyd, as they sounded in 1967. There was such a flurry of creativity from Barrett, but he just fizzled out, went into semi-retirement, then disappeared completely. I hope, as one person thinking of another, he's feeling better now. I won't harp on his problems; He has had enough to last a lifetime, without more people to beat up on him.
The record is dated, yes, when listening, you don't hear state-of-the-art, but you do hear what sold people on them in the first place. Barrett's songs straddle a fence, they are either charming, childlike poems set to music, nice little "songs," or deep, intense experiments in sound and word pictures. Even though "Interstellar Overdrive" is a group composition, this is a good example of this point, it's an extended jam, two uninterrupted performances played entirely independent from each other, with the beginning and ending cut out of one, and the remaining segment overdubbed onto the the other complete performance. So you hear the band playing coherently, then it becomes all disjointed, goes all over the place, and comes back to the opening theme, with that crash landing of an ending, which segues into Barrett's funny little song, "The Gnome." Two completely different sides of what the band was about, but played with equal conviction.
Roger Waters Was credited with co-writing two compositions, along with one of his own, and in an interview Nick Mason gave a TV journalist (This interview is included on the VHS tape "The Dark Side"), they all concede that it isn't a great song, but he of course went on to become a terrific songwriter. "Take Up Thy Stethoscope And Walk" is fast and choppy, naive lyrics, somewhat off-key singing, and very ameteurish. But does have a high degree of energy, and it fits the premise of the Floyd's debut.
From the first stirrings of "Astronomy Domine" to the last jumble of sounds on "Bike," it is good, entertaining music; just remember, it's very old music, but a good document to its time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
A must have not just for anyone who's into Pink Floyd, but the beginnings of the psychedelic era as well. This album recorded at Abbey Road Studio's at the same time as the Beatles were working on Sgt Peppers, its a quaint, eccentric and very interesting album, echo's of which you'll here in releases that followed well into the 70's be it DSOM, Wish You Were Here & the Wall etc. It also speaks to "What might have been" had Sid Barrett not sadly floated away & off into the ether..... This album & A Saucerful of Secrets very much reflections of his genius. Truly was the "It Guy" of early British Progressive Psychedelic Rock.

5.0 out of 5 stars Obra maestra de Pink Floyd

5.0 out of 5 stars Superbe re masterisation de James Guthrie et Joel Plante

5.0 out of 5 stars Pink Floyd’s first album
Remember when I first heard this album in 1967 when it was released. Never heard anything like that before! Something new it was. Nice to have it on CD now and remember that time. A good first album from Pink Floyd sure it was. Recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Obra Maestra de los 60s
