prep surface

Surface must be dry, clean, and free of dirt, grease, glue, and existing coatings before staining. Sand the wood in the direction of the grain using a fine-grade sandpaper (#220) until smooth. Remove all sanding dust. To help ensure uniform acceptance of stain color and beautiful results, pretreat the wood with Minwax Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner following label directions.

stain surface

Apply a liberal amount of stain evenly with a brush or clean cloth. Wait 3 minutes and remove the excess stain with a clean cloth, wiping in the direction of the grain. Allow to dry 8-10 hours. To darken the color, apply additional coats of Minwax Gel Stain repeating directions for application of first coat. Allow the stain to dry 8 to 10 hours between coats. Do not sand between coats.

protect surface

After 24 hours (dry time may be extended due to heavy application, low temperatures or high humidity), complete your project by applying a clear protective finish. Recommended finishes include Minwax Fast-Drying Polyurethane, Water-Based Oil-Modified Polyurethane, or Helmsman Spar Urethane (for exterior uses).

Product Description

Quickly and easily give your wood projects a beautiful, rich color with Minwax Gel Stain. This interior wood finishing gel stain is specifically designed to give you full control over the staining process and help you achieve beautiful results. The unique, non-drip formula makes application easy for vertical surfaces. It’s thick-bodied, so this Minwax stain stays more towards the surface, allowing for greater control during application.

Minwax indoor wood stains deliver color evenly on wood and non-wood surfaces, such as metal, veneer, fiberglass, plywood and more. Recommended uses include woodwork, furniture, doors, molding, trim, cabinets, and accessories. For best results, pre-treat bare wood surfaces with Minwax Pre-Stain Conditioner to ensure you get the most uniform color. Ideal for interior wood projects but can be used on exterior surfaces as well (exterior surfaces must be top coated with an exterior clear protective finish).

To apply, use a clean cloth, wood stain brush, or foam applicator to apply Minwax Gel Stain liberally in the direction of the grain. After 3 minutes, wipe in the direction of the grain to remove excess stain. Reapply after 8-10 hours to deepen the color. Wait 24 hours before applying any Minwax protective finish.

See my photos…the first in before and the next 2 are after. First time using gel stain, and I have to say it was much easier than the liquid/watery kind…and much less messy. Our door had already been stained in the past, but had seen better days thanks to the elements, so we lightly sanded it first. We didn’t take the door off the hinges- we picked a nice day that we could leave it open for a few hours with a fan blowing on it…it dries fairly quickly. We had to go pretty thick with it to be able to keep it looking more of a uniform color. The directions say to wait 2 minutes after application and then wipe off. We actually waited about 5 minutes and then very lightly wiped it off, doing small sections at a time. The color was a bit darker than I thought it would be, but we like it. The coverage is a bit heavier than I expected but I’m sure it’s because we left it on a few minutes longer and used a heavy application….but again, we like it. The door is 9’ tall and we did 2 coats- 2 days in between and still have about a third (maybe more) of the little can left. Yes, it’s thick like pudding…IT’S SUPPOSED TO BE. We are happy with the results and would definitely use it again.

When I moved into my house, we had these faux wood pattern on these labeled doors. I want a fan and one door we always look at because it is at our entrance and also visible from our playroom. I bought this gel stain to use on the door since it had the wood pattern engrained in it. It was easy to use. It dried very quickly in the door. I didn’t realize how quickly it would dry and then not be able to be manipulated for a more even finish. The color is pretty and for the most part I like how it came out but it takes a few days to cure at which the color faded, and like I said the stain ended up uneven. Overall it still did the job for me and it’s better than having the ugly white door previously there. I added a greenery wreath and it made a big difference in the look.
I did use finishing wax when I thought the stain was dry and it took the stain right off! Be careful of the true dry time

I have used gel stain over painted furniture, unfinished wood and on previously stained wood. The coverage is amazing. This is something that goes on like paint. You can use a brush or staining pad. I have used both. You can put it on and wipe off excess or add on to make it darker. I love the color variation on this one. It holds up without even using a top coat. I am amazed at the things you can use with the gel stain. Very durable over time and use, quality is amazing and smooth finish. If you never used this before you will notice it is thick. You don’t have to stir much. Sometimes I don’t stir because it’s thick and the color is already there. It’s user friendly. I would choose gel stain over any regular stain. Another great product from Minwax. I do a lot of work on furniture finishing with stain and paint for my paid hobby. I love it and like to try different things.

I bought a used dresser in great shape but it had a few large spots where the stain had completely come off. I tried to match the stain in those spots to the rest of the dresser but even though it was the same color you could still see the spots. I really didn't want to sand the whole thing and start over so I decided to try the gel stain and it worked great.
I applied the gel stain right over the top of the existing stain on the entire dresser. It totally covered up the spots and looks great.
It is thicker than a normal stain so you dont see as much of the wood grain but you can still see some, especially if you wipe it off quickly.
It has a strong smell so make sure to be in a ventilated area.
This stain was a little more expensive but considering the time it saved me not having to sand first, I think it was well worth it.

I've been refinishing furniture for over 50 years. I've used about every method known. This was the easiest stain finish I've used. The hardest part was stirring it 'creamy' but the match was flawless. I needed to refinish only the tops of two tables and didn't want to strip everything 100% to ensure perfect match. The stain chip was accurate, the match was perfect and I now have two tables refinished and waiting the move back into my living room. Honestly, it took longer to smooth out the stain than it did to apply and wipe off. Only one coat of stain needed.
