    MercyMe continues to be at the very top of their game with this Christmas release "It's Christmas" - it's impeccably produced, sounding fully as polished and thought-through as their last album "Welcome To The New". And it does something that few Christmas albums have managed to accomplish this year - it makes old songs sound fresh and new, with thoughtful, 'turn-them-on-their-ear' arrangements, and new songs that don't sound like pale leftovers in comparison. It's literally ringing with joy and Christian cheer. Before I put this on, I had listened to a couple of other new holiday releases, neither of which impressed me much, despite the fact that one was both were by industry veterans, and this one opened my ears and brought in the Christmas Spirit. Favorite tracks include the honky-tonk groove of "Christmastime Again", the gentle 6/8 time recasting of "Sleigh Ride" the gentle guitar-driven "I'll Be Home For Christmas", and the full-throttle rocker "Hold On Christmas". But honestly, there's not a weak track in the bunch - it's a fun, FUN album, and worth checking out and adding to your Christmas playlist this year.

    I purchased this release only a week or so ago, so I haven't been able to listen to it repeatedly, but I am glad I purchased it. The positives are: The tracks are performed and put together well, and if you are a fan of Mercyme, you will be pleased because the musicians and vocalists are as good as usual.

    As far as negatives: I purchased this release after owning their first Christmas offering, "The Christmas Sessions." If you are hoping the new one is as good as the first, at least for me personally, it's not. Tracks on the "It's Christmas" release are put together with less creativity than the first. Also, tracks on the new release are much less powerful and bold as the first. I haven't found a song nearly as powerful as any on the first like "Gloria," "Little Drummer Boy," or " I Heard the Bells....."

    It may be unfair to compare this release to their previous, and if you are simply looking for a quality Christmas release, this will do it. High quality, and there may not be anything that can top it this year. However, for those of you that may own their fist Christmas release, you may not find it at that level.
