Gorilla Mindset Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.5 out of 5 stars 3,475 ratings

Gorilla Mindset is an entire system that, when coupled with specific mindset shifts and habits, will change the way you think, feel and live your life.

Applying Gorilla Mindset to your life (make no mistake, this is an audiobook you must apply) will improve your health and fitness, lead to more money and career advancement, and help you have deeper, more meaningful relationships (or more casual ones; it's your choice).

Your thinking will become clear. You will have more focus. You will know exactly what steps to take to change your life.

More importantly, you will be able to troubleshoot your own life - what psychologists call auto-regulate - when something goes wrong.

For the first time ever, there is a complete system for you to live by, and more importantly, to improve and adapt to your needs. Some chapters will revolutionize how you live your life where as others might not apply to you at all.

Gorilla Mindset is not an audiobook of theory. These are all practical steps - mindset shifts you take or habits you form.

There are chapters on routine, self-talk, frame, focus, state/mood, mindfulness, and body language. Each chapter contains techniques, mindset shifts, and habits that can be applied to your life.

Yet each chapter forms part of an entire system to apply to your life. The chapters all feed off of and add to one another.

For example, improving your self-talk will improve your state or mood. How you frame challenges in your life is also a matter of the language - or self-talk - you use.

Getting in the moment improves your self-talk just as your self-talk helps you get into the moment.

At the end of Gorilla Mindset you'll tie every concept together to live the life others don't even dare dream of.

It seemed like a re-hashing of select danger and play articles
I've known about Mike for a while. I posted on the same internet forum he used to frequent and was a regular visitor to danger and play. I originally was going to give this book a 3 star review. After my first quick read through, I didn't find anything remarkably new or revolutionary. It seemed like a re-hashing of select danger and play articles. I stowed the book away and continued down my reading list. However, I had several respected friends that wouldn't stop talking about how much of an impact Gorilla Mindset was making on their lives. I decided to give it another try. I read it a second time and then a third. It started to sink in. I realized Mike's content wasn't the issue, it was me. If you're an aware type A person, it's very easy to fall down the rabbit hole of reading self-improvement books but never changing your behavior. Your evaluation shifts from one of finding quality actionable advice to collecting and hoarding novelties, theories, and hacks. You have to be receptive and action-oriented to squeeze the most utility out of Gorilla Mindset. Below are some of the practices I've implemented because of Gorilla Mindset: -Morning routine of contrast shower, abundance stretches, and 5 minutes of visualizing my future immediate goals using all 5 sense if possible -Longer visualization sessions about my perfect day/perfect life. This is a great way to have a dialogue with yourself about want you actually want. It's shocking but I often get so lost in the rat race that I neglect to ask myself what I want, which leads you to make decisions for others and not yourself. -Being aware of self-talk. I self-talk, either vocally or in my head, every day and I rarely ever label it as self-talk. Without labeling it you can't control it. Once you realize you're self-talking you can guide it down a different path or change the conversation. -Having a mantra. Mine personally is "leap, and the net will appear". Repeating this to myself at stressful times has led to action over procrastination. There are a lot more but I encourage you to buy the book and find out for yourself!

My only up front frustration with this book is that if it came out just a little sooner I would have had the absolute perfect graduation gift to hand out. The other quibble I have is that it is somewhat difficult to jump around in the book to where you'd like to get to, other books I've had on Kindle had chapter titles and hyperlinks in the table of contents on the drop down menu, whereas this only has chapter numbers. Certainly not deal breaking by any means but a minor obstacle for getting back around to specific parts for review that will be integral for getting the most out of it. The value in this book is deceptively simple a few exercises and mental revisions, but with dedication the cascading impacts that follow will leave you bedazzled. There are more than a few parts where you'll tap your forehead and exclaim "why didn't I think of that!?" This book will be one of the indispensable, well worn, dog eared favorites abiding the bookshelves of successful people for decades to come.

Just about any given chapter and its advice is worth the cost of the book, some parts will resonate more than others due to differences in how minds work, but it all ties together into a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. As he says in the book, you already have the keys, this will help you find them. The information is pretty dense and there is plenty of nuance to tease out of the economically crafted chapters, there is no filler or fluff like you get with many bloggers who write books. This is not a "Best of" collection but a proper workbook, that stands on its own, and the topics covered in Gorilla Mindset are further unpacked and developed on his website and podcast. This is probably the closest you can get to magic without delving into the occult.

The first (majority) part of the book helps your life in a defensive mode, getting things in order and laying the foundation from which you can capitalize and really take it to a level that so few amongst us can even dream. The chapters serve as signposts of successful and happy people, getting your self talk in order (which was instrumental for me personally) looking at challenges constructively, being mindful and paying attention to yourself and surroundings, controlling your emotions, serving the defensive aspect, then it pivots on certain aspects like lifestyle engineering, physical wellness especially posture, and financial matters get fleshed out, and the final 2 chapters open right up and point in general ways that you may want to go, by this part if you have done all the work and aren't firing on all cylinders then you probably need professional attention.

Using the techniques in Gorilla Mindset has been such an unbelievable boon to me. The physical aspects are nice, I've put on dozens of pounds of muscle, but the piece of mind I have, especially compared to all the problems so many other people deal with daily that no longer even blip on my daily radar, it is just day and night and I would never trade it. Watching my coworkers and family hamstringing themselves for the foreseeable future with bad attitudes is one thing, and I still have plenty of problems, but I think it is very telling that these people I know and love who go through their day with so much undue drama and stress find it so amusing and such a major event if I happen to express a little frustration with a challenge I'm having. They have the keys to unlocking their chains, you do too, and this book will help you to find them.

    (Review via www.MasculineBooks.com)

When the Table of Contents for Gorilla Mindset was first released, I was a bit disappointed. Everything was Mindset, Mindset, Mindset. I felt that the book was going to be too much fluff, and not enough substance—it was quite the opposite.

Although the first few chapters on subjects like self-talk and framing we’re a bit harder to grasp, as the book went on everything began to come together.

Then it hit me: Everything is Mindset!

This is why Mike employed chapter titles such as:

Mindset is a Body: Health & Fitness
    Mindset is Posture
    The Money Mindset
How you perceive your ‘Health, Wealth, and Freedom’ is all derived from your mindset towards these things. And the proper mindset to have towards these subjects is the ‘Gorilla Mindset’, one of unapologetic masculinity, discipline, and hard work.

    Why This Book is Different

As you may know, I loathe generic self-help books. The writing is hackneyed fluff, and does nothing for the reader.

Gorilla Mindset, however, is not a self-help book. It’s a “How-To” book, as the book’s description states. For example, you’ll learn how to use self-talk to become more aware of the present moment:

Checking in will help you be more aware of your emotions and will make even challenging or mundane challenges more fulfilling and meaningful.”

Although the concept of self-talk is a bit ‘weird’ as Mike points out, it’s essentially a way of stopping any emotional momentum from taking full steam. Instead of succumbing to a fit of rage, you can engage in self-talk to take back control of the situation.

How I feel is a choice I make in the present moment.” Do not passively accept whatever emotional state happens to affect your body.

Perhaps the most important aspect of this book are the exercises listed after each chapter. My favorite exercise was visualizing the perfect day. This really put things in perspective for me, so that I know exactly what to focus on and what to discard.

    The Mind-Body Connection

What virtually all traditional self-help books ignore is the importance of the body, and how it is tied in with the mind. Mike makes a point to note this, and discusses how closely intertwined the two are. For example, if your diet is terrible and you never exercise, there’s no way you’re going to feel positive and energetic day in and day out.

I also loved the chapter on posture. Although I was familiar with it from some Danger&Play articles on the subject, this was a good refresher of the exercises. In fact, I started implementing them in my morning routine, throughout my work day, and I even rigged a standing desk so I don’t have to sit all the time (I used a wicker basket trash can on a desk, ha!).

    How to Read This Book

I love it when I get an amazing book and just can’t put in down. Gorilla Mindset was one of those books, however, I had to force myself to put it down.

    Why?

This is a workbook, not a lecture.

    Treat it as such.

I started out reading just one chapter at a time. I’d read the entire chapter, go back a few pages and re-read the ‘Practice’ and then do the exercise if I found it relevant. Later on I dropped this and just read several chapters each sitting. However, to get the most out of this book take it slow.

In fact, in a few weeks I plan on going back and reading it again: Slowly, really digesting the material and putting things into practice.

    Final Thoughts

There is a lot more content that is covered in Gorilla Mindset, but focusing on it too much takes away from the fact that you actually need to put in work through the exercises. Whether you’ve never heard of Danger&Play or have been reading it for years, you should absolutely read this book, as it will put what you’ve read over the years into perspective.

I purchased Gorilla Mindset about 3 weeks ago, after listening to Mike Cernovich's podcast for a few weeks - a podcast I discovered after seeing Mike's tweets being retweeted by various accounts I follow. I enjoy listening to the podcasts because Mike seems to be a very switched on guy, with tons of valuable info delivered in a concise way, so for me the books were an natural progression / an easy sell.

A week after purchasing Gorilla Mindset I sat down with the principal of the real estate office I work from and handed in my resignation. After 6 years of working 6 and 7 days a week I finally stood up and stepped back away from a non stop grind that was making me feel like an old man.

Since then I've been working out 3 times a day every day since. I've been taking 3 hour walks on the beach at sunrise, attending bikram yoga, lifting weights, boxing, swimming laps at the pool, growing a beard and getting a tan. I own no money, have very little debt, I have wages coming in for the next two months. I haven't stepped back from responsibility like this in 20 years. The next two books I'm reading are MAGA Mindset by Cernovich and Flow - a book recommend by Mike in Gorilla Mindset.

I could list all of the things Mike put in this book as inspiring reasons I was able to make the decision to take a pit stop during the race of life but that would be pointless, because it's up to you to buy the book. If you are seeking to improve your life, this might be the book that succeeds where everything else you are reading has failed. Get into it,

You can listen to this guy forever. His advice has helped me overcome boredom and passivity to a great extent. I used to have a lot of brain fog, was very sluggish at work, emotionally drained out most of the time. Having an over-protective upbringing coupled with a scarcity mindset, things were not going my way for quite some time until I came across Danger & Play and started juicing and working out. Seeing progress at the gym gave me courage to finally start my own legal practice and to my surprise things went pretty well in my first year of practice. Success is 90% mindset and 10% luck. I am experiencing momentum in my life now. I feel Gorilla Mindset is the next step to bigger and better things. I have a long way to go but I know I have the right foundation to thrive in all worldly pursuits. Mike! I want to personally meet you someday and say thank you because this review does no justice to the amount of work you've put in to change lives, I hope that day comes soon. Till then, may you succeed in all your endeavours - Fan from India :)
