Proof That Hollywood Can Still Make Excellent Film Noir
This disk is a great example of what should be the standard for the quality of Blue Ray at its best. The script presents us with a taut and well crafted tale which truly evokes what Los Angeles looked like in post-war era. If there is one glaring omission it is the failure to depict how many cigarette smokers there were in this era when smokers could light up right at their desk.In the film the part called Bloody Christmas is based on the historic events of 12/25/1951 at an LAPD sub-station when: "The attacks, which left five Hispanic and two white young men with broken bones and ruptured organs, were properly investigated only after lobbying from the Mexican American community. The internal inquiry by Los Angeles Chief of Police William H. Parker resulted in eight police officers being indicted for the assaults, 54 being transferred, and 39 suspended." Source: WikipediaOne mistake of continuity takes place when Detective Bud White (Russel Crowe) is leaving the Victory Motel during a heavy rain storm which turns the dirt parking lot into mud; however, when his car drives off there is a dust cloud formed by the cars wheels spinning on what is supposed to be mud. Or perhaps the mud in the Film Noir era is of a different quality than the mud I've seen. The film uses several historic bars from this era such as the Rumpus Room and the Frolic Room (the later was refurbished for this film) and is a bar that was one of the hot places for the Hollywood elite to mix. On one occasion "The Duke" passed out in the bar so he was left there to sleep it off; he slept through the night and when he woke up the following morning (since he was locked in) made breakfast while waiting for the bar to be opened. The film was nominated for some 35 awards ranging from Oscars to Golden Globe to BAFTA and won in 7 categories such as Kim Basinger getting an Oscar for best supporting actress. This is a must see for fans of Film Noir and is a should watch for all who love to watch gritty detective stories. At first there were some concerns that three of the most important protagonists were relative unknowns (Russel Crowe, Kevin Spacey and Guy Pearce) although this is the movie that made these actors — with a cost of some $25 Millions to make the film with a return on investment of some $120 million. Finally when we see Lynn Bracken as Veronica Lake with a client watching a Veronica Lake the film they are watching This Gun For Hire with Veronica Lake and Alan Ladd. (This film is also excellent Film Noir.)At this time (12/29/20) there are plans being made to produce a sequel to the movie although I'm not all sure this should be attempted since it's not easy to catch lightning in a bottle two times in a row.

I finally watched L.A. Confidential almost 30 years after the making. It should be of America's classics; amazing characters and storyline!

I lived in L. A. Been in the Formosa. The set designer, costumes all perfect.

And the actors were all perfect for their roles.

It has the vibe of the fifties, which I remember well.

This movie came out in 1997. I watched it just now for the first time, close to 30 years later. It's hard to evaluate a movie this far after the fact. Our culture and tastes have changed.

This is in the genre of neo film-noir. It's basically a cops and gangsters movie set in the 1950s, with decent focus on the cars, the suits, the guns, the broads. The story follows three cops in particular in what is a very corrupt LAPD. They are trying to solve a shooting in a diner. Kim Basinger won an Oscar for a supporting role as a prostitute and love interest.

Movie starts out slow but picks up about halfway through. Fun to watch, with cool surprises and twists. Not sure why Rotten Tomatoes recently decided this was the greatest movie of all time. It is a very Hollywood-y movie, we will give it that much. Nice film. I'll give it 4 of 5 stars. On a 4-star rating I'd probably give it 3 or 3.5 at this point.

This movie is already a few years old and yet it has become recently reacquainted with it, due to doctor's orders - bed rest. Now one has time to revisit some movies that may be interesting and watch them more than once. To refer to movies as one would refer to books would be heresy and yet I find myself reading a good book several times and watching a good movie several times too. With movies it is certain scenes or parts of a script that I watch over and over because they are brilliant. Perhaps writing reviews may become another new thing I do whilst recovering from surgery and being on what I now fondly call 'bed arrest'. It is all going well, so please do not worry about this humble reviewer. Your humble reviewer though finds it hard to stay still and do as she is told (doctor's orders remember). This movie has a number of particular qualities in addition to being a very interesting story. The main kick is that some of the greatest artists are in this movie performing in a good plot together when they were young. Russell Crowe, Kevin Spacey Guy Pearce, Danny De Vito, and many more. I definitely urge to consider watching this one again on a day when you are told you have to stay in bed for your health, you have had a stressful week or you want to see a movie with a plot that is quite interesting. This is perhaps the movie where I became a fan of Guy Pearce (he is not just a pretty face but a very smart one too). I am, as you know, a reviewer than likes to comment on the performance and the appeal of the movie itself as opposed to telling you what it is all about (which spoils the fun to have something to look forward to). For those reviewers who do find it important to reveal the plot of each movie in detail and do so kindly excuse me, I respect your style. Sometimes a movie that is worth much more than what the critics say is overlooked. This one, is now, in my opinion: a classic. I hope you find it as entertaining as I did or perhaps blame it on the bed rest. Your call. Do value each moment of life and please have some fun (books and movies), don't wait until you are told you are sick before you do. I hope some of you do agree with yours truly. One more thing: streaming is perfect. One more thing I love about technology now compared to where we were ten years ago. Thank you and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ottimo blu-ray per un moderno classico
Reviewed in Italy on April 16, 2024
