The Best Miss Marple Fully Remastered!
BBC’s remastering of Joan Hickson’s “Miss Marple” episodes is a huge success as far as I’m concerned. The colors and clarity are bright and beautiful. The sound has been cleaned up. Hickson’s masterworks now look as good as her acting and Christie’s writing deserve.Joan Hickson played Miss Marple in 12 episodes and all 12 of them are included in this Complete Collection. That’s 23 ½ hours of top-notch mystery viewing. English subtitles are available. The Complete Collection includes one Bonus Feature, the 3-part 2013 British TV series “A Very British Murder”.Each part of the bonus feature is 50 minutes long. Host Dr. Lucy Worsley takes you on a tour of England’s love affair with murder mysteries. Part One tells how real-life murders became an entertainment industry, starting in 1810. Part Two covers two important changes. First, the London Metropolitan Police Force, in the last half of the 19th century, becomes scientific. They actually start detecting. Secondly, improved literacy rates and cheaper books meant that fictional detectives became stars. If you’ve read about the public’s outcry when Conan Doyle killed off Sherlock Holmes in 1893, you have an idea of the grip fictional mysteries had on the public. Part Three carries forward with the newly sensationalized reporting of real murders, as well as the Golden Age of Detective Fiction. All in all, this Bonus feature is a pleasant few hours of murder! In case you are wondering, there is no NEW material in this Complete Collection. Hickson’s remastered episodes were previously issued in three DVD/BluRay sets, titled Volumes One, Two and Three. Each of those 3 sets has one of the 3 parts of Lucy Worsley’s TV series. So, if, like me, you already have the three Volumes of remastered episodes, you will get nothing new in the Complete Collection.Volume One Episodes:“Murder at the Vicarage”“The Moving Finger”“The Body in the Library”“A Murder is Announced”Miss Marple: Volume OneVolume Two Episodes:“They Do It With Mirrors”“A Pocketful of Rye”“4:50 From Paddington”“The Mirror Crack’d From Side to Side”Miss Marple: Volume TwoVolume Three Episodes:“A Carribean Mystery”“At Bertram’s Hotel”“Nemesis”“The Sleeping Murder”Miss Marple: Volume ThreeIf you haven’t yet sprung for the remastered Miss Marple, I can highly recommend it. It is amazing how well the show looks.Happy Reader

British mysteries are the best, but Agatha Christie's mysteries are my favorite. They are best when not tampered with or changed too much, or God forbid, updated for the times. In the 1980's they somehow chose the very best to play Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot. The stories never wavered much from the books, and I have read every one several times, and Joan Hickson was spot on; she was the very best Miss Marple, without doubt. Every story in this collection is perfect, the characters are right on target, the era is perfect and should never be changed as they recently did with Tommy and Tuppence. If only they would do the rest of her stories with such perfection in era, and casting as they did with Miss Marple and Mr. Hercule Poirot. I would love to see Tommy & Tuppence stories just as they are in the books, same era, and terrific casting. They did well back in the 80s with Partners in Crime, but blew it with the new set they tried to pass off. Anyway, to any one who loves Christie and Miss Marple you will be pleased with this collection and the remastering is terrific. Well worth every penny. Feb. 2019 update. I have the set before being remastered and it was great, but have to admit this one puts the icing on the delicious cake. It is a fine job of remastering, colors crisper and altogether very much improved visually. Of course, there cannot be an improvement over Joan Hickson as Miss Marple, she was the best and captured Miss Marple to perfection, it is if she came directly out of Ms. Christie's imagination, her clothes and her personality, as are the stories in this set, follows the storyline and era without deviation. You can't go wrong if you love Agatha Christie and her mystery solving Miss Marple, and this improvement well worth the investment.

There have been several attempts to put Miss Marple on the screen, both big and small. To me this one is the besst -- and that because the Miss Marple character is so brilliantly realized, and all the production values are very high. But...

Yes, but. (Well, at least for me.) For despite the uniformity of the excellence I just described some stories still fail to hold my interest and become tediously long.

The "some", I have realized, comes down to this: Are the people the story revolves around themselves of interest. Do I actually care about them?

In many, again, for me at least, the answer is no. They are just there to advance the plot. Two- dimensional. Of no interest in and of themselves at all. And for me at least the "problem" at the heart of the story -- the "mystery" -- then becomes just a mental exercise, and not one of any consequence.

OTOH, the disc mastering is noteworthy. Upscaled onto my large system it looks amazingly good considering its age and source.

If one is truly "into" Christie's then this set likely would be found a winner. For me its at best a mixed bag. A few that truly grabbed my interest. A larger number that simply did not.

I had a set of the Marples with Joan Hickson that I watched frequently. I missed some of the words, since they didn't have closed captioning/subtitles. The resolution was also not great. Enter this set. Subtitles & crystal-clear video. Dang, that's what I was hoping for. Mission accomplished! Put on your sleuthing hat & watch her go!

I purchased these disks for my wife and I am more concerned about the quality than the content because I'm not part of the target audience. She is very pleased with the content and I the quality. The box arrived in perfect shape, all discs where they should be mounted. Removed each disc from the set and test played them for audio/video quality, seek, pause, resume and play. No faults noted in any of the discs and the quality of the video is fantastic.
If you're a fan, buy with confidence, these are faithfully reproduced with good audio and video.
