Editorial Reviews
CD resissue of David Bowie's fourth studio album. Hunky Dory has been described by AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine as having "a kaleidoscopic array of pop styles, tied together only by Bowie's sense of vision: a sweeping, cinematic mélange of high and low art, ambiguous sexuality, kitsch, and class".

- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2022HUNKY DORY was the original coming-of-age LP for DAVID BOWIE and it was followed very quickly by a number of other discs. So quickly in fact that a lot of the juice that he may have been able to acquire during that time for HUNKY DORY was drained away and moved off toward some of those other discs. PERSONALLY, I prefer good old HUNKY DORY for its originality and its content, I eventually ended up owning all of the other ones as well, and I did not rush things while I had the time to spend with the original disc and loved every single track on that. I think ANDY WARHOL is particularly great.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2012Where to begin...This grows on you over the years. It has its immediate appeal, too; but some of these songs are so personal that one blushes at the fact that you are allowed insight to this mysterious person's life. Quicksand and Bewley Brothers are my favorites. I just don't understand them at all. Cool! Lay me plate and bake me pie I'm starving for me gravy. I'll tell you all about it on the next Bardo. Andy Warhol is a scream.Truly! Is there life on Mars? Lennon's on sale again.
It's not just surreal, it's super-real. Here she comes again, the same ole painted lady from the brow of the super brain. All the nightmares came today and it looks as though they're here to stay. This album charted in America before Ziggy and was critically acclaimed. The songs are about real people. One can only guess who they are. Queen Bitch is about Lou reed , so I've been told. Differrent place, different time. Gaga is almost here, but not quite. Some day she'll hit it though. With our backs on the arch, the devil may be here but he can't see thru all that, we were gone, real cool traders, kings of oblivion,we were so turned on in the mind warp pavilion. Sheer poetry. I'm still finding new things with every new listen 40 years later.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2008If it was not for Amazon, the Reveiwers, and Sellers I would be up a musical creek without a paddle. I would not have known of this release of Hunky Dory, or liked my chances of buying this release.
Hunky Dory is my all time No1 Album, which even surprises me, considering my No1 Rock Albums are Tonights The Night by Neil Young and Bringing It All Back Home By Bob Dylan. Iam not a reveiwer, although I have played the reveiwer in the past, and would not be able to do the album justice. Only to say Art (lyricly abstract) as never sounded so emotional or searching to my ears.
Being a mini Lp jacket version caught my interest. After reading reviews on the better sound decided to buy. This being my third upgrade: first upgrade; 1990 RYKODISC, secound upgrade; 1999 EMI (24 bit remastering). Begining a Japanese pressing there is usally a improvement in sound and the album does sound better, and the improvement is more than a slight one.
To me this upgrade was worth the purchase, and I do not have to wait another 9 years for a Deluxe or Collectors Edition
- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2007...there were LP's, and LP's had a Side 1 and a Side 2, and sometimes the division meant something artistically. (I am aware that tape cassettes have 2 sides also, but sometimes the song lineup is altered, thereby compromising the artistic continuity.) Anyway, the 2 sides of "Hunky Dory" are easy to distinguish. The first 6 tracks comprised Side 1. They are more mainstream in form and more musically bright in execution, even though the subject matter of some of them is quite serious. What I am saying is, they are "pretty" in a pleasant, appealing way. "Changes" is, of course, one of Bowie's most well-known and well-loved songs. "Oh You Pretty Things" has great piano and an irresistable chorus, and "Kooks" is almost unbearably sweet (that's a compliment), especially the line "...and if the homework brings you down, then we'll throw it on the fire and take the car downtown." What a dad! "Life On Mars" and "Quicksand" are symphonic, lyrical masterpieces, works of pop genius by any standards. "Mars" makes you laugh and cry at the same time, but there's not much to laugh about in "Quicksand".
Then there's Side 2. Track 7 I dislike. I don't even want to discuss it. "Andy Warhol" has some good guitar action, and the lyrics are a fun and clever tribute to Andy. "Song For Bob Dylan" is a plea for the artist to return to his early protest roots. I theorized this, but I had to confirm it on Wikipedia. "Queen Bitch" sounds like Lou Reed music, which is a good thing. The final cut, "The Bewlay Brothers", is a strange, somber song with lyrics that make no sense to me - again, Wikipedia backs me up.
Rating this album, I give "Side 1" 5 stars, and "Side 2" 3 stars, so the combined score is a 4. If all tracks were as good as the first 6, it would be an unquestioned 5-star work. Bowie learned a lot before he moved on to "Ziggy".

5.0 out of 5 stars Clássico absoluto
Excelente prensagem, Vinil alemão, vem com encarte simples, mas o minimalismo dos itens coincidem com a obra de Bowie, que é simples e genial ao mesmo tempo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Muy buen disco de Bowie
Un discazo y una muy buena edición, desconozco si las habrá mejores pero esta está de lujo, carpeta interior con letras, fotos e información, lo mínimo que se le pide a estas rendiciones, buen gramaje y buen sonido. Muy contento con la compra

5.0 out of 5 stars Album geniale
Dipanandosi tra ballate e inventiva costante del giovane cantautore inglese, qui non ancora famoso, l'album ha una potenza che trasporta direttamente su altri tempi, e non sembrano essere stati poi tempi tanto cupi...
