- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2023I admit I was thinking this was just another gimmicky alternative to AA that made promises for easy success. I was wrong, the smart recovery for friends and family clearly showed me how I am unknowingly contributing to the loved one's addiction and what I can do to change myself for the better. I would recommend this book to anyone not getting benefits from Al-Anon or counseling.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2017This book has been a great guide to help me in dealing with my son who has a drug addiction. I wish I would've found this a couple of years ago when we first started seeing signs. I have been able to use this as a guide to help me move away from my enabling ways and even though we are stilll dealing with my son I feel like we are in a much better situation. I ordered Smart Recovery for him but he has not read it yet.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2015This book followed up my husband's admission to a rehab facility. It was informative.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2017This is a handbook and self-help manual for people who are struggling to help a family member or friend that has a substance use problem. The focus is on self-care, setting appropriate boundaries, and moving the loved one toward treatment. It is well-written and I consider it the best starting point for family members who are frustrated with their loved one's behavior. Provides real guidance for people who want to get out of the cycle of avoiding the problem, nagging, and arguing.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2017It doesn't feel all that different than the materials AA and Al-Anon put out, but without all the "higher power" jive thrown in, this is a much less hostile resource for the non-religious people dealing with addiction among their friends and families. I just wish this organization had more group meetings where I live.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2019SMART is a great alternative to AA and Al-anon. It offers actionable, religion-free advice. This book seemed like common sense to me, and at times it came off condescending. If your “LO” is an abusive addict, don’t bother with this book. If your children aren’t safe in the care of the addict and your childcare options are limited, also skip this book. No ones going to take guitar lessons as self care while worrying if their “LO” is driving around drunk or high with their kids.
The book has lots of great advice, it just definitely won’t apply to everyone at every stage of life.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2016This book validated so many of my feelings and I don't feel as isolated. I've never been a fan of "admitting I'm powerless" so Al-Anon is not for me.I've been happier since I read this book and realized there were things I could do to try and help, but the actual addiction isn't MY responsibility. I look forward to reading Getting Your Loved One Sober next.
