- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2017I find it perplexing that gem of a movie has been so poorly reviewed (at least by postings on Amazon review) I started scrolling through some of the
positive reviews and felt that they liked and admired it for pretty much the same reasons that I did.
One reviewer pointed out some reasons he thought had caused so many poor reviews, chiefly because the viewers were expecting something else based on stereotypes Ben Stiller has somewhat became associated with, and the critical whilst very realist take on the shifting morality and the younger couple's seemingly duplicitous and manipulative attitude(However I don't think their portrayal was meant to be generalization about young people) and some genuine critical commentary about the emphasis placed on being parents and a not so flattering take on babies.
But this was a movie remarkable enough that I decided to contribute my own 2 cents by way of this review.
One of the reviewers wrote that this was the best movie the director has made since the "whale and the squid", a movie I have watched and liked a great deal, so no surprises that the director Noah Baumbach, is a true auteur.
I can go on waxing about the reasons why the movie struck me as a delightful on so many levels. While it can be classified as a dramedy (as one top review classified it), it is a movie which at its core reveals our own misconceptions about ourself, how we may believe ourselves to be a certain kind of people only to realize by staring into the mirror of other people's actions and attitudes that we are different and evolving and inscrutable to our own self.
It's a great watch and jolts you to rethink the whole process of getting older and our perceptions about the process. I would recommend this wholeheartedly.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2016This film is not going to be universally appealing; I enjoyed While We're Young immensely, but not everyone will. Firstly, Ben Stiller is known for wildly comedic movies that also have a serious, what have we learned about ourselves moment or message. This film turns that expectation on its head because while it does have some very fine comedic elements, they are sparse and learning about ourselves is the primary purpose and theme. Therefore, many of Stiller's fans will be disappointed, while other viewers will be surprised to admit they have now seen a movie in which Stiller plays a part that they like. Secondly, some have compared this film to those of Woody Allen. Loosely the comparison applies as While We're Young, especially in the beginning part of the film, seems to film the natural ebb and flow of the relationship between an older 40ish couple and a younger couple in their 20s and the influence they have on each other. However, this film is not about the seeming nothing, yet truly absolutely everything about the relationships of these characters alone. Ironically, this film is also a discussion of what a documentary is and the ethics concerning whether it is important, necessary, and essential for every single part of a documentary to be truthful or whether it is permissible to play with the format, framing, or presentation of the discovery of documental material to make it more entertaining and therefore more marketable and profitable. Although, this discussion in the film is not played heavily and intellectually, but occurs because four of the major characters are documentarians or involved in the process of making documentaries, it is still a major part and theme in the film. Quite frankly, a far number of viewers will not relate to this material and will find it boring even. Finally, persons about 40 years of age or older will enjoy and relate to this film and its learning about ourselves messages best, while younger viewers will have the hardest time relating to the film even while being the audience that has the most to gain from its message. I believe younger viewers can understand the film and can relate to the emotions of the younger couple, but will have trouble following their motivation, or if not and if they understand their motivations first, then they are not going to be interested in the impacts upon the older couple, just as younger people are not interested usually in listening to their grandparents stories. I gave While We're Young three stars because of its lack of universal appeal, nevertheless, it is easily the best film I have seen this year. Not because movies are that degraded or terrible this year, but because of the general high quality and excellence of this film, its writing, direction, and acting are all excellent.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2015You are young. You can't wait to grow up. Then you are allegedly grown up, and you don't know where your life has gone. AND you're only 44. It's not an unusual path, and the pairs of actors in Baumbach's film are engaging and off putting as they so often are. Flawed. Selfish. Decent. And so often trying to be something they are not. Self concept bumps up against reality. Stiller's character has been making a documentary for ten years and thinks the hold up is 'funding.' Naomi Watt's character has grown up the daughter of .... a documentary film maker (Grodin) and understands the complications. Friends are having babies in their late 30s and this couple doesn't know whether they are still young or missing out. Where has the time gone.
Enter a young couple, one an aspiring doc film maker (Adam Driver) who acts the fan,and with his wife, an ice cream maker of terrible flavors makes the older couple feel youthful and hip. Stiller sporting a new fedora is having a blast, until he isn't. He's betrayed. Been played. He's a chump who in many ways deserves his comeuppance.
I liked the three generational artsy scene, the frustrations of trying to be creative, creatives trying to adapt to new technology, methods, ways of defining an art form. Grodin's character lends a kind of underplayed ballast to the story as he is honored for his long career in documentary truth telling. While all the main characters are pretty much phonies, there are real questions about 'creative non-fiction' 'reality tv' and even editing that makes objectivity questionable. It worked for me. I'm still brooding about The Squid and the Whale, so I'm a fan of the writer/director.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a good film
The film was fun to watch. The ending was disappointing though. I think that the conclusions the protagonists draw are a bit depressing. I do not agree that we all age the same way and I don't believe that youth excuses being Machiavellian. I also dislike showing the search for Truth as futile.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great movie
Great movie even if it is awkwardly confronting. Procrastination anyone? And who knew David Bowie’s Golden Years worked so well as a lullaby?
A must see for any Adam Driver fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars jolie romance
le film est bien, les acteurs jouent à merveille . juste le fil qui est un peu commun: d'autres , parlant de ce sujet, sont plus originaux ou exotiques !
