- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2021Color: BlueVerified PurchaseI got this for my first fountain pen and have been using it for about 3 or 4 months now. It is pretty light in the hand, so the weight is similar to other ballpoint pens (i.e. Pilot G-2 ballpoint). I like the cartridge refills it came with and the ink color is very nice.
I go through ink pretty quickly, so I decided to get separate bottles of ink and a converter for this Lamy. The converter is Lamy brand and from the Lamy sellers. I am not crazy about the design of the converter for this particular pen. The converter has a rectangular twist mechanism for filling/emptying the converter and is thin and very fragile. Mine cracked my first use and I had to get a replacement. So although I like this pen itself, the brand's converter (not included) is a mark against it for me.
As I said, I got this for my first fountain pen. I have since bought some others with different size nibs and different designs/brands. I like the width of letters/lines using this pen, but I will say that this Lamy is less comfortable to hold long-term (as a student, I write a LOT of notes) than my other pens. It works fine and the price is good and I still use it very frequently. But the triangular area where your fingers hold the pen is very tight and causes some strain in my hand. I have some wider/fatter fountain pens that are circular and easier to hold that I prefer to use.
TL;DR
pros- cheap, writes well, cartridge refills nice
cons- uncomfortable to write with for extended time (fine for memos, not for novels), if opt to buy converter for ink bottle refill (cheaper long-term) Lamy Brand converter poor design
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2019Color: BlueVerified PurchaseAfter spending countless hours watching YouTube reviews and annoying my local stationary store employees I decided to finally purchase my first fountain pen. This pen, the Lamy Safari, was suggested by more sources than I could count as being the perfect beginners fountain pen; I can definitely understand why.
First off, the pen is beautiful and a minimalists dream when you consider how crazy fountain pens can get. The F nib that’s included was exactly what I was looking for and has very little flex. The include nib is black, just like the pen itself.
Rather than using the blue ink provided in the pen, I opted to switch it out for one of the black cartridges, and installation was a breeze. I can definitely see how purchasing replacement carts could become an issue, so I strongly suggest getting the piston mod and a bottle of ink. The pen writes like a dream, and my art instantly looked 23% better as soon as I began drawing with the Safari. I don’t think that Lamy can guarantee it’ll make you a better artist, but if it worked for me, it’ll work for you too.
As all the other reviews say, beware of fakes! This one is the real deal though and I feel confident in my review! This pen won’t change your life, it’s just a pen. It’s an amazing pen though, and worth every penny!

- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2019Color: BlueVerified PurchaseI was hesitant to purchase this pen on amazon because I had heard of people receiving fakes. But, for the price, I decided to give it a go. Once I received it I looked up a couple videos on how to tell the difference between a real and a fake, and gave it the all clear. I would recommend doing that if you purchase most things off of amazon. Anyways, getting to the pen. I had been torn between the Lamy Safari and the Pilot Metropolitan as my first fountain pen (like with most people) but ultimately I decided on this one for a couple reasons. One, the material of this is a much lighter weight plastic which to some people might give it a “cheap” feel, for me it just makes it more comfortable to write with. It’s very lightweight and balanced that it just feels good in the hand. The ergonomics of this pen cannot be understated. It follows the bauhaus form of construction, very Germanic (as is the company, Lamy). The construction quality of a Lamy Safari cannot be expressed enough. This is a wonderful product and if you are deciding to buy one, I highly recommend doing so!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2022Color: BlueVerified PurchaseI bought this as my first fountain pen, now I'm in-love & have since bought 3 other fountain pens. Now that I have some experience with them, I can officially say that this was a great pen to start with. Very easy to use. Great feel in hand, sturdy enough. Cheap enough that if something bad does happen or you don't like using fountain pens (which I can't see how that would happen XD) it isn't such a big loss financially.
I had a friend well versed in pen manufacturers & fountain pens verify that this is in fact authentic since I have seen where some sellers were peddling counterfeits.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2024Color: BlueVerified PurchaseI'm just getting into fountain pens. This was my first, and I now have a Lamy Joy and a Montblanc Noblesse. You really can't go wrong with the Safari if you think you might want to try a fountain pen. The nibs don't do anything crazy, but you'll immediately understand the tactile feeling of a fountain pen over your typical ballpoint pens and cheap markers. I keep my Safari in my work vest, and the clip has such a fantastic design. It's easy to take out, put back, and it never falls out. Honestly, it's worth getting for that alone if a pen clip has ever even mildly frustrated you like they have to me.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 25, 2024Color: BlueVerified PurchaseI purchased my first Lamy Safari fountain pen in 1989 while spending a semester in Germany and now 35 years later, I still love my Lamy pens.
If your looking for your first fountain pen the Lamy is a great budget friendly option. The triangular shape of the base helps ensure proper positioning of the pen for good ink flow. Multiple nib options also are available to your individual writing styles and needs. I personally like the Fine nibs for detailed writing and the medium nib for emphasis in my notes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Pen, Nice to Use
Color: BlueVerified PurchaseI bought this pen having seen it reviewed on YouTube , recommended as a good ‘beginner’ fountain pen. It’s certainly that.
Previously I had bought a pack of 4 cheap plastic retractable fountain pens, made in China. They worked ok, but, the differences were immediately apparent.
The pen is far less scratchy and noticeably smoother to write with. The triangular design makes it comfortable to hold. The price is comparable to other ‘cheaper’ fountain pens. Many die-hard pen collectors seem to recommend it.
I have also bought a slightly more expensive TWSBI Eco, again following recommendations on youtube. The TSWBI is, for me a more substantial and nicer pen. But that is reflected in the price.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Lamy Safari. If you’re thinking of buying one, looking to use fountain pens, perhaps for the first time, I recommend it. This is the start of my pen collection!
