Product Description
The nurses, midwives and nuns of Nonnatus House invite you to join them again as they try to give the best possible care to the poorest women in London. Now nearing the 1960s, the community enters a new time of social change, while stories of birth, life and death continue to touch your heart. Will live-wire Nurse Trixie marry her young curate? What new project calls for a heart as big as Chummy’s? How will Sister Evangelina react to two new nurses? And why does Sister Julienne appear so unsettled by a mystery benefactor? Jenny Agutter (MI-5, The Avengers), Pam Ferris (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Matilda) and Miranda Hart (Miranda, Magicians) star in this award-winning series, inspired by the memoirs of midwife Jennifer Worth.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2015I binge watched all 4 seasons this summer and liked season 4 even better than the first three seasons: a mix of happy and sad endings. I thought the characters have become "rounder:" even lovely people can reveal small mindedness and have blind spots. Even smart people can do the wrong thing. Women had it hard and were bossed around a lot, no matter how competent. So it's interesting to see these characters grappling with life and not always being perfect and rosy. As for complaints from some viewers about including characters and situations who are LGBT, I thought that it was well-integrated into the storylines and had nothing to do with promoting a PC agenda. Do you think that there weren't people of all kinds in the 50s and 60s? I just wish that they'd give the Trixie character a better love interest than the curate. His character has never shown that he understands HER or does anything that she likes -he never listens/asks what she thinks--she must buck up and learn to like what he likes and understand HIM. I hope she gets well and gives him the old heave ho permanently and not because she thinks she isn't good enough for him but because he isn't good enough for her. At least that's how I'd write the next season!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2023Binging this. Just upset that prime is making me pay so much for each season as a prime member. Prime members should get a discounted rate. I’m hooked so they know I’ll pay it. Trust me they keep track
- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2015While this series (all 4 seasons) - got off to a slow start, it is worth plugging through the first seasons two or three episodes to get into the rhythm of this moving story. So many things to take away from the show...the strength of women, the pros and cons of government run health care, the changes in women's health and delivery practices as well as baby care, the conditions of the poor s than, but at times the conditions are clear) and a positive example of Christian religious life and faith. I have learned from the quiet and beautiful narrations (by Vanessa Redgrave - who also appears in the 2014 Christmas special which is part of this season), the examples of the women (and men) and the words of wisdom and faith (especially uttered by Sister Juliane) and the beautiful words of the songs sung by the Sisters in (almost) every episode. This is a story of love and community. I find myself thinking abut them the next day. Beautiful.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2015Show is one of the best shows on T.V. and shows no sign of slowing down with a virtually all new cast. What I most admire is how the handle sexism and racism without putting a modern spin on it. The people smoke, especially the doctors, and they treat people according to gender but you can feel the future beginning to happen. The episode about the man kissing a man in a public toilet was heart breaking but it ended as well as it could and you saw where Britain and the rest of the world was going. My wife and I both commented on how wonderful the nuns and the lay mid wives interact and it feels like a toast to an early non nameable feminism. If you have not watched this show begin at the beginning and catch up for this is TV at its finest

- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2015I am a regular watcher of this series. I cannot imagine why it does not get mentioned in Emmy season.
I missed this episode (Christmas Special 2014) when it was televised a few months ago. It is just right.
Amazon's streaming service for PCs does not work correctly until or unless Silverlight starts; if you have problems with Silverlight, Amazon has a procedure to restore it. The demise of Unbox means that I will not be downloading Amazon Instant Video for a while, only streaming.
Rumor has it that Amazon is working on a Windows app of some sort.
Unbox turns back into a pumpkin at the stroke of midnight, Cinderella.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you loved the first three series of Call the midwife
If you loved the first three series of Call the midwife, you will love this one! I was worried with Nurse Jennifer Lee's departure ( the midwife who's memoirs the series is based on) that the series would lose authenticity and that the stories would be as intriguing , I was wrong. These seasons dealt with some hot button topics such as immigration and homosexuality. New nurses Crane and Barbara are great additions to the cast. I love that Miranda Hart played chummy in a recurring way so we still got to see her as she worked with the mother/baby home. The personal connection the nurses have with their patients and communities is very inspirational to a nurse like myself. I also like how we learn about the general social situation in the early 1960s in England and how they dealt with the challenges of then new National Health Service( NHS). The personal lives of both the nuns and nurses at Nonantus House is both interesting and a good enough reason to watch the show itself. I look forward to watch series 5 now and hope it is renewed for a sixth.
The DVD opens with the Christmas special and continues into the first episode of series 4.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Series! Best Season Yet!
I have watched all 4 seasons as soon as they were available on DVD. And I like this season the best. My impression is that there are more smiles in it than in the previous seasons. I especially love seeing Dr. Turner's many happy smiles after years of seriousness.
I found I consistently came away from each episode - even if it featured a very difficult situation - feeling upbeat and positive, aware of the miracle of life and grateful to be alive.
I'm very grateful to Jennifer Worth for writing the book that sparked the series. And I think perhaps what stuck with her all those years later were the difficult and tragic stories, more than the many, many joyful births. And I think that is what ended up in her book, and thus in the first 3 series. And in Jessica Raine's performance. I think she acted the part beautifully as intended. But I always felt a bit anguished in watching it.
I find the main characters who remain more 'cleanly' positive. And I enjoy the newcomers to the series. They also add to the brightness and pleasure. And I love, love, love that it's a series that is about women supporting women!
