Ringo in Paradise!
What could be more fun than an evening with Ringo and his All-Starrs up on Lake Winnipesaukee?!!? That was the fun that kept me going to fulfill my Ringo discography collection.

POSTCARDS FROM PARADISE is Ringo Starr's 18th post-Beatles studio album. If you include the obscure and hard-to-find children's album Scouse The Mouse, released on British Polydor in 1977, which I do not own, that LP would be the 19th. During his solo career, Ringo has also issued five greatest hits/compilation albums, twelve live albums, and by my count, 11 live video releases (four on VHS tape, and seven on DVD).

This new album, like its recent predecessors, is a lot of fun. Recorded with past and present members of The All-Starr Band, including brother-in-law Joe Walsh, Richard Marx, Gregg Rolle, Richard Page, Gregg Bissonette, Van Dyke Parks, Todd Rundgren, and others, the album features Ringo's classic rock sound on all tracks, with touches of Cajun music and reggae here and there. I particularly enjoyed "Rory And The Hurricanes," a tribute to Ringo's pre-Beatle band, and got a big kick out of the title track, which strings together as many Beatle and solo Ringo title and lyric references as possible. Ringo's distinctive drum sound, pounded out on his Ludwig kit, is evident throughout, and while I hate to say this, his voice is in better shape than Paul's at this juncture. While I hope it was just an off-night for Macca, if his dreadful performance of "Maybe I'm Amazed" on the SNL 40th Anniversary special is any long-term indication, then maybe our Paulie should consider retiring. Don't make a fool of yourself, Macca, as Sinatra did at the end of his career, when he would forget most of the words to his signature songs, even with TelePrompTers, and would sometimes mistakenly sing the lyrics to one song while his band was playing another. If it gets that bad for Paul...

With his overdue and well-deserved induction into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, I hope this album is a huge success for Ringo. Five stars.

Ringo Starr's "Postcards from Paradise" overflows with good-time feeling rock and roll. "Rory and the Hurricanes" that opens the disc bounces joyfully with great guitar parts by Dave Stewart as Ringo's vocals ooze deadpan sincerity, "Went to a dance on a Friday night, every London girl we asked was so uptight; I saw a pretty little girl, she came from France; She said 'Oui" when I asked her to dance; The world was spinning like the glitter ball above and already I was falling love." It's simple stuff, but joyful and musically addictive. The second track weaves in a sitar synth to give a Harrison-like flavor on a darker-themed song with Steve Lukather's searing electric lead guitar melting the speakers. "Island in the Sun" was written by Ringo's All Stars that includes Todd Rundgren and is a handsome pop tune, "It ain't in the whiskey; it ain't in the drug; It could be a woman when she leads you to love." "Touch and Go" also shines with its driving melody, blistering guitar solo and Ringo's drums giving the track backbone, "What we found as the years go by is nothing changes if we don't try; To see each others' point of view and build a love that's deep and true." The other tracks are also strong. Enjoy!

I like Ringo Starr as a drummer and also like his concept in making records. I read a 1 Star review on iTunes that simply said "Naw bro." While also grammatically incorrect, this person does not understand Ringo's concept in writing songs and making records. When Ringo was asked to write his autobiography he declined saying he preferred to put his autobiography into his songs. On 2008's "Liverpool 8", the title song was autobiographical as was 2010's "The Other Side Of Liverpool" from the "Y Not" album; 2012's "In Liverpool" from "Ringo 2012" and "Rory and The Hurricanes" from "Postcards From Paradise". On this album every song has a different style which makes every track a delightful listen. Ringo also has perfect timing and has been called "The Human Metronome". The title track is made up of 26 Beatles and Ringo solo song titles (Ringo's count, not mine) strung together to make a brilliant song that makes sense. I have all Ringo's albums and like them all for different reasons but I think this is his best album since 2003's "Ringo Rama". It is definitely one of my favorite Ringo Starr albums.

As an additional comment, after listening to the CD for 2 months the vinyl LP was released and the warmth of vinyl makes this 5 Starr album sound even better.

Postcards from paradise, again again again and again; thank you Ringo,we love you.
