This is a great, streamlined app that does exactly what I was wanted (teaching rhythmic fundamentals) without unnecessary hoopla. It has a well thought-out difficulty/complexity progression, starting with the rudiments and advancing through to some very challenging concepts. Each new concept is introduced simply, then expanded, then built upon. A nice touch (a game-like motivational element) is that certain levels are locked until you score a certain amount in a related earlier level. Making it even better from a user point of view is that only certain levels are locked---you're not kept out of everything untiil you go in the app's order of teaching; you're free to skip around to other concepts. So even if you can't/arent ready to unlock certain challenges (e.g. multi-mode), you can still get a taste of others.
Play is simple but exactly on point. A metronome at the bottom, a stream of notes flowing by, and a button to tap in time. As the notes move by (not cheesy Guitar Hero clone) you tap in accordance with the note value (or don't tap for a rest). Audio feedback includes the metronome, the note you hit, and where the note should be. Points are awarded based on how well you hit the note/followed the displayed rhythm.
No in-app purchasing is a bonus. There are ads, but they don't run between every single step (unlike some overly monetized apps) so they're not very intrusive. And there is a very occasional 'rate me' screen, but it's less common than the ads and permanently dismissible.
There are only two things that are kind of missing (kind of because they don't diminish the app, just things that would be nicer to have). it would be good if the feedback gave you an idea of *how* you were off a note, not just that you weren't on. It would be good to know if I was consistenly early or late (and some metric of by how much) or if there is not pattern. Also, it would change things up a bit if I could have some control over the tempo--to be able to speed or slow the metronome for different exercises. Again, not critical so this is not a detraction.
This has really been a helpful app! I wish that it would tell you if you're late or early when you play because I never really know. I wouldn't suggest using this if you're completely new to rhythm counting. You should learn to count orally then use this for more help. I watched videos on a YouTube channel called Music Education For All. They have playlists for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. I use this app to practice what I've learned from the videos.
This would be a really neat product/tool if they develop it a lot more. It doesn't make much sense, the game part doesn't work. I hope they keep working on this -- could be useful!
I think this will be a gig help with my music theory classes if I can figure out how to play it. We looked it up on Google, but there shouls d be instructions given when you open the app. I'd probably give it a 4 or 5 if it was easier to understand.
