Editorial Reviews

On February 10, Dualtone Records will release Robert Earl Keen's 'Happy Prisoner,' an album unlike any other in his storied catalog. Inspired by the bluegrass and acoustic music he grew up around, Keen has put his unique stamp on fifteen standards and other beloved tunes (twenty on the deluxe edition) by Flatt & Scruggs, the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, even Richard Thompson. Special guests include Lyle Lovett and Natalie Maine's on vocals, Nickel Creek's Sara Watkins on fiddle, and Danny Barnes on banjo.

    Great album, swift delivery

I'm not even that big a bluegrass fan but REK seems to pay individual attention to everything he records so it always works. I had not heard "52 Vincent Black Lightning" before but this is a good cover. I'm also a literal lifelong Red Clay Ramblers fan and it warms my heart that somebody took notice of "Twisted Laurel" (RIP Tommy Thompson).

I have all REK's cd's and am a big fan, so I am biased in favor. This is a nice break from "yet another REK cd," which is probably merited since I thought his last one, Confetti, was a little weak. Of course, a weak REK album is still a 3 star in my book. Happy Prisoner is reminiscent Springsteen's Seeger Sessions. It's a group of musicians who usually play a different kind of music playing a bunch of covers of bluegrass songs they like. If you are familiar with the very funny spoken interlude on his first live album, "The Live Album," you already know REK has been a bluegrass fan since his days at TAMU. So, when you get to be mid-to-upper fifties years old and you have established yourself as a leading singer/songwriter and solid performer, you get to go do an album like this one. It won't go down in annals of seminal bluegrass music compilations (think Will the Circle Be Unborken), but it is still a fun album - a sunny Saturday afternoon driving around town fun kind of album. I would much rather hear an album like this than a "duets" album, which is what other artists at this age seem to gravitate toward when it's time for a new release, but they don't have enough compelling new material. This is a fun break while the new material is readied for 2 years from now.

I've been a Robert Earl Keen fan for years, so I'm not exactly an unbiased reviewer. That said, I think this is one of his best efforts yet. If you like bluegrass, you'll really enjoy Happy Prisoner. If you like Robert Earl Keen's other work, you'll love Happy Prisoner. If you're just a fan of acoustic, stripped-down, folk/country/Americana/whatever-you-want-to-call-it, get this album. The tracks range from covers of classic bluegrass tunes like Walls of Time and Footprints in the Snow, to covers of country hits from a generation ago (see 14 Carat Mind - my personal favorite of the album) to the nearly hill-hop Hot Corn Cold Corn. And if you get the chance, got see REK live - it's the best show in music. The guy never mails it in.

"Happy Prisoner" is not your traditional bluegrass album. It does have a banjo, played subtly and with great skill. And a dobro. All the musicians are fine players and Keen's voice and phrasing are a pleasure, too. The REK band plays great traditional bluegrass tunes like "Footprints in the Snow" and "Hot Corn Cold Corn" with a fresh interpretation. And there's a well-done version of "52 Black Vincent", Richard Thompson's most famous song.

The album is an easy listen, one you'll want to play again and again. For the occasional bluegrass fan it's a must. Keen is true to the genre but he brings his own laid-back Texas style to every tune.

REK and Bluegrass? Love them both and this CD does not dissapoint. Only advice to listeners is this..... This is unique and doesn't fit neatly into a traditional REK effort nor does it cleanly fit into a traditional bluegrass one. If you are looking for singer/songwriter REK, you could be dissapointed as these were all penned by other artists. If you are looking for true- hard core bluegrass or new grass, this ain't it. If, like me, you are looking for enjoyable sound via excellent instrumentals and fun interpretations, you may love this like I did.

I go back to "West Textures" with Robert Earl and I must say I've not been impressed with his latter-day work and not much of a bluegrass fan. I was hesitant to even buy this, but I'm a completist so I went for it. Very pleasantly surprised! Nice arrangements, and he's singing like he means it. I hear just as much old-time country on tracks like "Long Black Veil" as I do bluegrass.

A wonderful collection of classic tunes written by many legends. Keen creates a new outlet of classic Bluegrass favorites and important moments in music storytelling. Keen uses his unique music quality to bring many of these classics to life and honor the great artistry of Bluegrass music; of music period. He tackles classics by The Carter Family, Jimmie Rogers among others. If you’re a Bluegrass lover then this is for you. A classic album of classic tunes. Keen is a master of many styles of music, from Folk, country, rock and bluegrass. His mastery talent is a brutal beauty of classic music. His style sticks hard in your mind. You can’t help but love his music, his sound and most of all his originality, even when performing songs written other's. A wonderful CD of bluegrass folk music. A very rich emotional vocal journey of flawless story telling songs. Songs that capture the nature of life. A vocal experience of tales told in a rough natural reality. A mixture of classic camp fire storytelling alongside a musical experience. A woven orgy of reality based down to earth moments captured in lyrical poetry. Simple yet unique. Vocal clarity. Lyrical mastery. Musical triumph in sound. Highly Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars sehr gute Aufnahme - klanglich absolut top - und wer Bluegrass mag...

Discovered this from a BA inflight audio package. If you like Bluegrass give it a listen. The sleeve notes says they wanted to capture the sound of Bluegrass picking in a small room and I think they hit the spot.
