- Test Stabilizer levels monthly and adjust when necessary
Maintaining Balanced Water
Below are the balancing parameters you need to keep perfect water. Monitor your levels on a regular basis to ensure the best swimmer comfort, sanitizer efficiency, and longer lasting equipment.
Test Weekly
- pH: 7.2 to 7.6.
- Free Chlorine: 1 to 4 ppm.
- Total Chlorine: 1 to 4 ppm.
Test Monthly
- Stabilizer: Minimum of 30 ppm.
- Calcium Hardness: 175 to 275 ppm.
- Total Alkalinity: 80 to 150 ppm.
Because you need to test your water weekly to prevent water quality issues, at-home water testing is a convenient option to regularly monitor balancing parameters. Use Clorox Pool&Spa My Pool Care Assistant Multi-Use Smart Strips to test your water's hardness, total & free chlorine, pH, alkalinity, and stabilizer levels at home.
For best results using Multi-Use Smart Strips:
Dip one Smart Strip into pool water at elbow’s depth, away from jets and remove immediately. Shake once to remove excess water.
- Never wipe or dry test strip after dipping in pool water.
- Read results in natural daylight.
- Keep wet fingers out of the bottle.
- Keep container tightly closed at all times.
- Store test strips in a cool, dry location.
Test strips are not reusable.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2019Style: 2019 packagingPattern Name: Chlorine StabilizerVerified PurchaseBrought my CYA level back into range! The trick is to apply it properly. Using the pool math calculator at troublefreepool dot com (highly recommend this site and test/chemical methods), I needed to add 4lbs of CYA based on my test results and pool size. I filled a extra large tube sock with all 4lbs. I zip tied the tube sock shut and to a safety rope eyelet and let the sock hang in the water to let the sock 'marinate' overnight. The next day when we went swimming, I kneaded the sock from the top down to make clouds of dissolved CYA in front of the skimmer intake - which then got sucked into the skimmer and distributed out through the return jets. The CYA granules in the middle and bottom of the sock will feel hard as a rock, but if you keep kneading the sock from the top down, they will break up and turn into clouds of CYA just like the stuff at the top. The whole process took about 10 min, which is longer than just dumping in your skimmer to let it sit in your sand filter - but I didn't want to risk clogging my skimmer line (like some have reported) or have to wait X days before backwashing - not knowing if I'd blow all the granules out if I backwashed too soon. This method works great for me, I hope it helps you.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2017Style: 2019 packagingPattern Name: Chlorine StabilizerVerified PurchaseI recently got a new liner and had to fill my pool with water which of course had no chemicals in it. I was not getting the chlorine to stay until I realized, and tested, for the cyanuric acid, which came up as 0. My pool is about 33000 gallons so I ordered 3 of these just to be safe. After adding two of these I tested in the 30 to 40 range which is where I like to keep it. I have not had any issues since then. This was much cheaper than buying from local pool stores as well.
Dissolving this is not simple but it seems unless you spend the money for the liquid stuff, none of it is. I tried to slowly put it in the skimmer (maybe not slowly enough) and some came out the jets. Next time I think I would heed advice given here about put it in a sock or pillow case depending on how much is needed.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2017Style: 2019 packagingPattern Name: Chlorine StabilizerVerified PurchaseVery good stabilizer, but one thing I learned, don't throw it in the deep end of your pool, it won't dissolve like shock or chlorine will. My CYA was at zero so I needed 2 4lb bottles of this to bring the levels up to 30ppm. The first one, I slowly spread it around the deep end of the pool by the drains and let the filter run. The next day, I saw most of the product sitting on the bottom of my gunite pool. I spent almost an hour brushing it back and forth before it all dissolved. Needless to say, it discolored my plaster. Bummer. The 2nd bottle I added to my skimmer, it is very slow to dissolve so just make sure you keep your pump running for 24 hours as it says on the bottle. The last thing you want is this stuff sitting in your skimmer overnight and then having a super-concentrated CYA rush into your pump and pool equipment.
Overall a good product, just be careful how you distribute it.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2019Style: 2019 packagingPattern Name: Chlorine StabilizerVerified PurchaseI've used cyanuric acid [chlorine stablizer] for decades and there's never a big change in the product. Most cyanuric is made by the same handful of manufacturers and so the only real difference is the packaging, and this one is worth buying again. One thing you have to know about using this product or any other cyanuric is that its dissolve rate is extremely slow. Backwash your filter first, put this in through the skimmer basket, and don't backwash for at least several days. Some of it will dissolve immediately of course, but the larger granules will require a lot of water flowing over the top to enter the system.
Be sure to regularly check your cyanuric levels. Dilution [draining water] is your biggest and only loss. The product itself is not really used up. But this like any other product is dependent on a range and is less effective out of that range. Too low and the product isn't adequate to perform the function. Too high and you can reach chlorine lock, where the chlorine that is in the pool is so tied up that it cannot sanitize. Proper range on this product should be between 40-60 ppm. If you are using Sodium Dichlor or Sodium Trichlor, these are also stablized products and will help hold your levels in the pool. However, if you are using liquid chlorine or calcium hypochlorite, these are not stabilized and you will have to make up the difference by adding some make-up doses as water is lost and replaced.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2019Style: 2019 packagingPattern Name: Chlorine StabilizerVerified PurchaseThis is by go to product to raise my cya for my salt water pool. Best way to use is to pour in old tube sock and put in slimmer basket. Squeeze it the next day or just let it chill but it will take a while. Those who say it doesn’t work are crazy. I monitor my levels closely and it works every time. Great product and price point.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2019Style: 2019 packagingPattern Name: Chlorine StabilizerVerified PurchaseIt worked, but I had a hard time using it. Tips from my experience.
I have a 22ft above ground pool with paper cartridge type filter with an aftermarket skimmer. It says for best results, add directly to skimmer slowly. I did that, but the granules dissolve VERY slowly. Too slowly for my small pump. It was making it bypass and sending granules into my pool. That's cool though. I stopped and decided to just pour the remaining portion into a bucket, mix with pool water and stir until dissolved. That would probably work better if you poured about 1/4 of the container in at a time and not the remainder of the container like I did. I stirred, poured off the liquid, added water and stirred ect for about another 45 min. Lessons learned. But my test says the stabilizer is at the perfect level now.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2023Style: 2019 packagingPattern Name: Chlorine StabilizerVerified PurchaseWorks perfect to control the balance of my 30' x 10' pool.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2015Style: 2019 packagingPattern Name: Chlorine StabilizerVerified PurchaseThe same chlorine stabilizer (100% cyanuric acid) you buy at the pool store, but for much less. Compared to the pool store I go to, this is two-thirds the cost for 4 pounds. I usually buy the 8-pound size at the pool store, but two of these is still only 75 percent of the cost. It's the same product (cyanuric acid) so it works the same. The containers for these is much easier to use, though. Twist the cap and pour. The buckets the other stuff comes in have to be pried open, sometimes using a tool because the stubborn things won't open.
