Product Description
A phenomenal cast, including Tom Hardy (THE DARK KNIGHT RISES) and James Gandolfini (THE SOPRANOS), leads this gritty crime thriller from writer Dennis Lehane (MYSTIC RIVER) and director Michael R. Roskam, writer/director of the Oscar-Nominated film Bullhead. Lonely bartender Bob Saginowski (Hardy) and his hardened employer Cousin Marv (Gandolfini) run a bar that is used as a 'drop' - a covert scheme that funnels cash to local gangsters. But when they find themselves caught in a robbery gone bad, and on the hook for a debt they can't repay, both men have to make the dangerous choice between loyalty and survival.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2025Like Tom Hardy? How about James Gandolphini? Can't miss suspense/drama movie centered on both as they work in Gandolphinis bar while some MOB money comes up missing.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2015THE FILM: THE DROP is a film that I was aware of last year, but that I was still unable to see in theaters. And, to be honest, this isn't the type of film that stays in theaters for very long anyway. It's a slow-building, adult drama that focuses on character and story rather than inundating you with a lot of action and special effects, i.e., it's the perfect example of an indie movie. I don't really want to get into very much of the plot, because to do so would take away from the experience of seeing it for yourself. Basically, Bob (Tom Hardy) is a bartender at Cousin Marv's Bar, and Marv is played by James Gandolfini in one of, if not, his last screen performances. The bar serves as what's called a "drop bar" (hence, the title) where mafia and mob types temporarily stash their dirty money. One night they're held up at gunpoint and the people who own the bar keep pressuring them to find out who did it and get their money back. Also, Bob finds a beaten up pit-bull and starts taking care of him. That's the setup. What follows isn't really profound, nor does it look at the deeper meaning of anything. It's just a good story about a quiet man who stands up for the weak. Noomi Rapace was also in the cast, and is the only other actor I was familiar with, but everyone turned in a great performance. From a technical standpoint, like the story, everything was rather restrained, letting the drama unfold naturally and never forcing any feeling or perspective on the viewer. The score also helped a great deal, keeping the story flowing and assisting in building tension when necessary. If there's anything to say to the film's detriment, it's that it's almost TOO calm and composed. But still, it was such a great story that I didn't mind much. People with short attention spans will probably find this a bit slow and boring, but the patient will be rewarded. I suppose the closest comparison would be with KILLING THEM SOFTLY, in the way it favors drama over thrills, and the sparing but judicious use of violence. If you're looking for a crime drama that has good characters and story, and heart, THE DROP wouldn't be a bad choice.
THE EXTRAS: Aside from an audio commentary, THE DROP's Blu-ray release is disappointingly short on special features. There are about 6 minutes of deleted scenes with optional director/writer commentary. The main reason for their being cut was for pacing, although they were interesting on their own. There was also a handful of 2-4 minute promotional featurettes that come off as fluff more than anything. I also thought they could have involved Tom Hardy a little more here, in the absence of James Gandolfini. Besides these, there is a gallery of production stills.
OVERALL: THE DROP is an excellent film with an artistic and gritty visual style, interesting characters, and an outstanding cast who brings them to vivid life. Perhaps I liked it so much because I identify on some level with Tom Hardy's character, but even then the film is just so well put-together. Of course, one is also reminded of just how great of a talent that James Gandolfini was, and it's unfortunate that he's no longer with us. For collectors, there isn't a lot of supplementary material, but then again, this isn't Criterion. The film is good enough on its own anyway. A must-see for Tom Hardy and James Gandolfini fans.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2025Highly recommend! Great performance by Tom Hardy!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2023I've been a longtime fan of Dennis Lehane's screenwriting. He's best known for his series work on HBO's, The Wire, and also Boardwalk Empire. The Drop is an often overlooked crime film that is such a gem. If you enjoyed 'The Departed' and a love for intense crime dramas, The Drop won't disappoint. I first watched it in the theatre when it was first released in theatres, but I purchased it to watch on a rainy evening and it's film that I now consider a a gem of a classic and one of the very best of its genre. It is a film with clever writing and end twists that are sure to have you go back to watch the film to catch any nuances you missed in the first pass. It's an interesting take on organized crime, but Lehane has been inspired by the Russian Mafia inter-workings, but decided to infuse Chechen mobsters as the criminal undercurrent.
The Drop was sadly one of James Gandolfini's last performances before his. He played the Cousin Marv character and his work in the Sorprano's defintely laid the ground work for him as an authentic character as he knew the territory of the mafia world like few others. Tom Hardy as Bob Saginowski was a performance Oscar worthy. Noomi Rapace as Nadia also was a performance that felt true to life in her character and John Ortiz as Detective Torres was another performance that gives this film life. Finally, Composer Marco Beltrami's score is worthy note for film aficionados. Rocco is the heart of this film.
I think there's enough out there illustrating the character plots and story line, but I wanted to give a nod to this wonderful film and write a few thoughts to recommend it to others who might have overlooked it. I can assure you it will end up on your movie shelf next to the Godfather, The Departed, Goodfellas and Casino. It's a masterwork.

5.0 out of 5 stars

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Movie......
There is one thing i try very hard not to do when I write a review is to give you the obvious, I like to give the stuff
that matters, if you look at the two actors, Tom Hardy an Matthias Schoenaerts (Bullhead and Rust an Bone)
two very good movies that he' s done, I applaud the director for not getting these two into a fight, which I think
Mr. Schoenaerts will win hands down, the guy an animal, an actually its the same director who directed Bullhead,
Michael R. Roskam, I just love Tom Hardy' s way of acting, I don' t think there is one director that can rush this guy
to do anything he doesn't want to do, he gives you everything in every scene he's in, this movie "The Drop" is slow
for a reason, very methodical, which is characterized by method or order, they have to give Noomi Rapace something
other than these not so big parts to play, guess they havenâ t found any yet, she wasnâ t bad though, if you ever think
you can mess with the Mob an getaway with it you're so wrong my friend, Mr. James Gandolfini will be sorely missed in
the movie industries, I remember seeing him in The Mexican he played a Gay hit man, you think thatâ s funny,
an the tense moment in the movie had me on the edge, especially the last bar scene, was waiting for that outcome??
I would like to say this is my Last Review that I will ever write here on Amazon, so I would like to Thank all those people
who voted on my reviews, and a very good riddance to me, Thank You All,

5.0 out of 5 stars Tom Hardy auf den Hund gekommen....
