Left For Dead Kindle Edition
An amnesiac survivor of a serial killer isn’t sure whom to trust in this thriller by the New York Times–bestselling author of Watch Them Die.
Something She Can’t Remember
When Claire Shaw wakes in a Seattle hospital, she remembers nothing of what has happened to her. She doesn’t recognize the concerned faces of her husband and friends. She knows only that she is lucky to be alive, the single surviving victim of a vicious serial killer.
Someone Who Won’t Forget
She was a mistake—not like the others. She didn’t understand. That was obvious now. But she would come to understand. Next time, there would be no escape—and her eyes would fill with that perfect, beautiful terror . . .
Some Things You Can’t Imagine
On an island isolated from the mainland, Claire has returned to a life she barely knows anymore. A town that feels as if it, too, is hiding something in its dark woods, remote cabins, and chilly smiles. Bit by bit, Claire’s memory is taking terrifying shape in a place where fear is very much at home . . .

About the authors
Before his thrillers landed him on The New York Times Bestseller list, Kevin O'Brien was a railroad inspector who wrote novels at night. His second novel, ONLY SON (1997) was optioned for film rights, thanks to interest from Tom Hanks, and featured in Readers Digest Select Editions. His first thriller, THE NEXT TO DIE, became a USA Today Bestseller. THE LAST VICTIM (2005), won the Spotted Owl Award for Best Pacific Northwest Mystery, and hit the New York Times Bestseller list. Several more New York Times Bestselling thrillers followed. Press & Guide said: "If Alfred Hitchcock were alive today and writing novels, his name would be Kevin O'Brien." Kevin's latest nail-biter is THE BAD SISTER. His is also one of thirteen award-winning thriller authors to contribute a short story to the anthology, NOTHING GOOD HAPPENS AFTER MIDNIGHT, edited by Jeffery Deaver. Look for his new thriller, THE NIGHT SHE DISAPPEARED, on Amazon this summer. Kevin O'Brien lives in Seattle, served on the board of Seattle 7 Writers, and teaches at Hugo House. He's hard at work on his 24th novel. Visit: www.kevinobrienbooks.com.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2014Oh, man. I just don't know how Mr. O'Brien does it. How does this author always seem to both amaze and annoy me at the same time?
For the wow factor - it's pretty simple. As usual, he is at the top of his game with setting the tone in his stories. His storytelling sets the dark tone right from the very beginning. It pulls you in from scene one and from there on, you're hooked. Some poor joe is going to to get it - and not in a good way. I really appreciate that about Mr. O'Brien's writing style. I love that you don't have to get fifty or more pages in to his novels for something awful to happen. Call me morbid, but I love it when the you-know-what hits the fan right from the very beginning.
Left for Dead was no different. Our victim, Claire, is one of many women to fall prey to an artistic serial killer dubbed "Rembrandt" for the works of art he creates on a woman's physical features after painting their faces with pristine cosmetics. She is an amnesiac who awakens to find that her teenage son is missing and no one, including her own husband, is willing to tell her why he supposedly ran away. This woman wakes up to secrets and cover-ups that later begins to unravel when she allies with the only other person, a Seattle policeman and part-time cartoonist, who seems willing to help her. In the meantime, Rembrandt is still out there and the killings just keep adding up and soon it's discovered that Rembrandt might actually have ties to Claire's island home of Deception, painting everyone as a potential suspect...
There is not much more I'm willing to say about the overall plot of the story because I don't want to give away a single plot twist. So I will move on to what annoyed me and that was the shallowness of the characters themselves.
This is the second time I've had to listen to how attractive the lead character was - and it wasn't just her, either. Everyone looked like a centerfold. All the people were pretty or handsome from the victims to potential serial killer suspects. I don't know, it made for an unlikely scenario to me, like they were living in a plastic society or something.
I don't know why that irked me so much, but it kind of did. I just didn't know why it was necessary for every introduction made involving Claire we had to be reminded how beautiful she was. Same thing of Officer Tim Sullivan. Almost every scene with him we were reminded of how attractive he was to women. What is that really about? I don't know, but in Claire's case, maybe I was annoyed because outside of Claire's beauty in particular, there wasn't a single redeeming thing about her. I mean, she was likeable enough, but she was the cliche damsel in distress if there ever was one. She couldn't stand up for herself and at every turn except for maybe at the tail-end when things hit a crescendo, she was absolutely defenseless. She wouldn't even stand up for her son's memory as a mother when the entire town made her feel like she had no right to ask about her son's whereabouts. She was weaker than she had a right to be, in my opinion. I'd think I was pretty bad-ass if I survived an attack from a serial killer and I wouldn't let that plastic town keep me from discovering the truth about my son or the nature of my attack. Claire cowered under her husband and his pushy friend, Linda's, rules. I wanted to scream "Get it together, bitch!" more than once.
Alright, I'm through ranting. It was a good book - a great book, actually. I just didn't like the characters. I thought only one character - Claire's friend, Tess, that she met in the hospital - truly had heart in the entire story, in my opinion. Everyone else was either annoying, insensitive (Harlan, Linda), pathetic (Claire), pointless (Nurse Sherita, who practically falls off of the face of the map after being fully integrated in the first 20 percent of the story and then the tail-end), or just too sexy to be a real cartoonist (Officer Sullivan). So barring all of that, this was as suspenseful of a book that I'm used to reading from Kevin O' Brien and, honestly, I think this would make a great first read for someone whose never read a book from this author before.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2017I enjoyed the twists in the plot, and for a change was actually surprised by part of the ending. I'm not sure if it's only a problem in the kindle version, or all editions, but there is a significant problem with editing. Several articles and pronouns go missing. Fortunately, I could figure out what was needed and understand the sentences as I presume they were intended. There are a couple of instances in which the author displays ignorance of the vocabulary he uses. He writes "rod iron" where it should be "wrought iron," and "kitten caboodle" where it should be kit 'n' (as in "and") caboodle. One's kit would be a bag or case containing necessary items of clothing or equipment. With better editing I would have rated this higher.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2024A great read. Kevin O'Brien is a master at keeping the reader guessing. I couldn't put the book down. As usual his serial killers are terrifying!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2022This book was very suspenseful and surprising. I did want to put it down. The ending was great. Kevin O'Brien is definitely one of my favorite authors.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2019I have read several Kevin O'Brien books in recent years and usually find them to be very exciting and satisfying. This one was not, for two main reasons: 1) I simply didn't care much for any of the characters. The lead victim (Claire) was just frustrating. She didn't trust anyone around her, suspected everybody, yet did very little to help herself get out of a bad situation. 2) No spoilers, but the big revelations towards the end were far fetched and, basically, lame. I hardly ever skim through any chapters but once it was clear "who dunnit" I was finished and rushed through to the end.
One other thing that was odd: I didn't realize until I started reading this book that it was originally published in 2004. Were cell phones really that rare back then?? It seems like only 3 people in the entire story had access to one! A simple Smart Phone could have saved Claire a whole lot of trouble! LOL
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2019A little bit police procedural, a little island culture, a lot of suspense and creepy bad guys! The storyline is deliciously complex and the characters are believable, “normal” people, except for the bad guys and gals! Those people are S.I.C.K!
Tim is a police detective who pretty much just does computer work. How he even got to be a detective is not explained. He and Al, a real loser of a detective are sent to one of the San Juan Islands to watch over a victim of kidnapping and attempted murder. He makes a few mistakes, but he likes the victim, Claire, so he tries to measure up. Lots of action and twists makes for an entertaining read!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2014Enjoyed the book. Good suspense, interesting and believable characters and good plot. Will definitely buy another written by this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2013This is my first book that I have read from this author and I couldn't put it down. I am an avid reader of mystery books and very critical of them and this book is very good. I didn't figure out who the killer was until I was almost done with it. This is a great story with an end you really can't figure out. Can't wait to get the next book by this great author. Love him.
