******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY OF SOUL MUSIC ********************

Soul music is a famous music classification which can be traced back to the United States in the latter part of the 1950s and early part of the 1960s. It is formed by a combination of rhythm and blues, African-American gospel music, jazz, and doo-wop. Soul music became a hit for listening as well as dancing in the United States and throughout the world, providing a direct influence to the music of Africa and rock music in general.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum defined soul as a "music that arose out of the black experience in America through the transmutation of gospel and rhythm & blues into a form of funky, secular testifying." Indeed, Soul music is funky and lively, with its “catchy rhythms, stressed by handclaps and extemporaneous body moves”. A “call and response” (between the soloist and the chorus), a particularly tense vocal sound, and sometimes improvisational additions, twirls and auxiliary sounds are distinct characteristics of Soul music. Instruments often used ins Soul music include bass guitar, piano, Hammond organ, electric guitar, drums, horns, and keyboards.
