- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2023I'll admit, I was not a fan of Barry Manikiw for years. It wasn't until he made the 2:00am Paradise Cafe album. I discovered him, and took him seriously. I'm not ashamed to say, this album makes me cry the Happy Tears. Two tracks took a little getting used to. The Jimmy Durante Number, "The Songs gotta come from the heart" Has Jimmy's voice locked in with a piano so the beginning part of the song sounds just like that of, someone singing with an old recording. However, once the newly Digitally recorded orchestra comes in, It breathes life into the recording, like you can't believe ! Next up, the Recording of Frankie Lymon, singing, 'Goody Goody" is Awesome. The original Music, has been stripped away,, and re-done with the same Heart, and feel of the 1957 original Frankie's vocal Track has been digitally cleaned up with absolutely no hiss or crackle, making it sound like (And I know you've heard this comment recorded before) but, this song truly sounds like it was recorded Yesterday ! It is truly happy and sad, at the same time. Especially, when you remember, how Frankie was ripped off and later had Drug problems. To hear Frankie so full of life, makes me bring out the Happy Tears. I won't go into detail over every single track, I will also confess the Andy Williams duet, took a little time to grow on me. My problem is, Andy Williams has the style of what I call, "The I'm in love with my voice" The exquisite performance from Whitney Houston reminds me of the Horrible way she turned out. It so nice we can remember the beautiful gift she had, and shared with us.My absolute favorite track, on the album, is the Duet he did with Judy Garland. Like the Frankie Lymon Duet, New music replaced the old, Judy's Voice was cleaned up, with all the Tape Hiss and Wow and Flutter has been cleaned up.(Technology can be a wonderful thing) I was in 1rst grade when Sammy Davis Jr. was on the charts with "Candy Man" I honestly can't tell you which version I like better. Both versions get me misty.. I'm Aware, a lot of listening and love went into this album, I'm hoping there are others that have been recorded, and are in a Vault somewhere. One final thing I would like to say is, to anybody who doesn't like this album, I feel sorry for you. It's also worth mentioning, it is such a treat to hear The Saxophones, with so much bite to them on "Goody Goody"
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2024The cd came on time, was packaged well and plays perfectly. My sister goes to every concert sits in the best seats, and loves just loves him, . She still listens to cd's, and I know what cd's she didn't have this one so now does She loves the duets.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2019A while back, I bought my mom a nice coffee maker and some other accessories so that she could have a little "cafe" of her own at home. Why am I telling you this? Because an important part of the cafe experience is the music. As it so happens, my mother is a devotee of Manilow, so I've been slowly fleshing out her collection of his CDs and this seemed to be the perfect opportunity to do so.
In this case, these are duets that have been engineered with legacy (historical) recordings. I've only heard a few, but the engineering seems to be good and the sound quality of a CD is superior to .mp3 or streaming. Also, my mother loves owning physical media, so it's a win all around.
As for the songs themselves, I can't really comment from a personal standpoint, but my mother likes them. Is this his best album? Not according to her. However, even without the benefit of AutoRip, this is a great purchase, as it's inexpensive and fleshes out an enthusiast's collection and adds new material.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2014A number of reviewers here have emphatically not liked this album. I happen to agree with one reviewer, Dustyart, who succinctly has stated that Barry's restrained and reverential treatment of the demigod artists collected here is nothing short of perfect, that is, what it should be, as tastefully done as possible. No there is no Cheese Whiz here, and the technical production is simply amazing.
As with more than a few I am not a huge Barry Manilow fan either, that province is in the realm of my better half, however, I AM a fan of Barry's smoky jazz and big band era beginning with Paradise Café and this album retreats into that production value while being honestly original with nice interpretive arrangements. The engineering of taking old recordings from artists like Satchmo, Sammy Davis, Mama Cass, Dusty, Judy Garland, even Jimmy Durante and Marilyn Monroe, lifting their vocals precisely, and then dropping them into new recorded arrangements, this is the best effort yet and I have to applaud Barry for the science used here as well as the artistry. I think many will love the album. I was worried it would be hokey or laughable at worst, and was rewarded with something I have to say is awesome. Bono singing with Frank Sinatra seemed weird to me, but I have and love the deluxe two disc special edition of that album, even though some of the duets with Frank seem contrived. This one with Barry is just amazing and I have to say, best track on the album is the duet with Dusty Springfield, I thought their voices would never gel and boy was I surprised! Also, Barry's arrangements are great, he didn't simply reproduce the original music with new players, he gave all the songs a pleasant twist for fresh and refreshing vibes.
This one was a gift, but I have found listening to it as enjoyable as the recipient, my lovely wife, and when you are a classic rock boomer who loves a lot of this kind of music as well, you can be heavy-handed when the effort is a gaffe. Not so in this case. I Wanna Be Loved By You by Marilyn Monroe has always been a "novelty" song and no one will ever accuse the sex goddess of being a diva vocalist, but believe it or not, Barry raised the silly song to a level of fun that is quite above the Tip Toe Through The Tulips class where it originally belonged. The long and short of the analysis and crux of the biscuit, if you will, is that (again repeating that favorite reviewer of mine) Barry uses subtlety in these duets, a trait often lacking in many of the duet albums which are bubbling over right now. If you like Tony Bennett's duets I & II, this album might make your list. The Sinatra duets album has some fault lines that are lacking here which makes this one all the more surprising.
The best part is the three "excerpts" which are used to provide intro's and bridges to some of the songs. And best of these is the Manilow composed What A Wonderful Life interwoven with Armstrong's Wonderful World, you can't help but really like the effort. Same for the intro to Moon River and the touch of class by integrating a tidbit of Country Roads into Sunshine On My Shoulders with John Denver. Goody Goody with Frankie Lymon is the real rocker on this set and after The Look Of Love with Dusty, is my next favorite, the arrangement taking a real swing approach.
And yes, if anyone notices, I stole my headline for this review from part of a review title published a few months ago, but then I actually thought of it first, so I am claiming equal ownership. This isn't as creepy as The 6th Sense, but it is as much fun as Ghostbusters!
