Editorial Reviews

Sabaton's latest album, HEROES, is a concept record based on different historical 20th century wars and battles, telling fascinating stories about heroic men and women on their dangerous missions on battlefields and other belligerent locations, such as Auschwitz. Music-wise, HEROES will strike the metal scene like a fighter aircraft from the clear sky. After serving some ultra-catchy, more traditional Sabaton epics, this Falun-quinet dives into more unprecedented territory with songs such as the powerful 'The Ballad of Bull,' Western-movie themed 'To Hell and Back' and guitar-driven 'Resist and Bite' - the latter one being some of the most up-to-date performances on the endlessly vibrant album.

"Heroes" (2014) is the seventh studio album from Swedish power metal band Sabaton. There was initial apprehension given that the band turned over four members after "Carolus Rex," but fear not--Sabaton's songwriters remain and are at the top of their game here. "Heroes" is easily my favorite Sabaton album, it's my favorite album of 2014, and it's become my go-to album whenever I do cardio.

With the exception of one track (see below), Sabaton is all heavy metal business here. This is a short, brisk album--there's no padding on any of these songs, there's no symphonic or guitar wankery, and no song overstays its welcome unduly (only two songs are over four minutes). Sabaton gets in, they blow it up with catchy choruses, and they get out and move on to the next one.

Style-wise, Sabaton hasn't really changed at all, but in addition to some of the best songwriting they've ever done (if "Night Witches" doesn't replace "Ghost Division" as their show-opener, they're really dropping the ball), they freshen things up a bit with an interesting variety of arrangements (see, e.g., "To Hell and Back," "Inmate 4859"). There's been a shift in the lyrical focus--to individuals and small groups in war--which makes the songs more personal and accessible.

If there's a knock on this album, it's that "The Ballad of Bull" (which isn't terrible) is something of a tempo killer, and Broden's voice on a piano ballad isn't the best idea. And the bonus tracks--"7734," a remake from "Metalizer," and "Men of War," a cheeseball tribute to Manowar--aren't as strong.

There are a lot of highlights here--my favorites are "Night Witches," "No Bullets Fly," "Smoking Snakes," "To Hell and Back," "Resist and Bite," and "Hearts of Iron."

In short, Sabaton is essentially doing the same thing they've always done, only better than they've ever done it. If you love Sabaton, you'll love "Heroes," and if you're new to them, this is a great place to start.

    12 tracks, 44 minutes

This is one of my three favorite albums from Sabaton. I especially love Night Witches, No Bullets Fly, Resist and Bite, and Hearts of Iron. It's a lot of fun blasting this over my car's stereo.

The only disappointment is that every copy of this CD my sister and I received came with a broken or cracked case. But I'm not going to deduct any stars for that. It's the fault of Amazon or the Postal service, Not the makers of this awesome album.

As the album name implies, this LP features 10 songs about different heroes of WW2; The music is beautiful and the stories are well researched and educating. I had never heard of any of these stories prior to listening to this album. The bonus tracks are also great. There are no “filler” songs. Every song is great. Entire album sounds awesome

The Only bad thing I have to say is that the vinyl has a few small skips at the beginning of ‘night witches’(from the vinyl being warped) Song is still very enjoyable. The skips are so small it brings the album down from 5 stars to 4.95 stars. No exaggeration.
    Would definitely buy this again.

I have had this album for quite a while (at least 6 or 7 months) and for some reason I felt like giving this a review. I have all of the Sabaton albums and this one is my favorite. Night Witches and Resist and Bite are my two favorite, but there are no bad songs. They are all good. This last April I saw them in concert while they were on tour in the USA. This album is great, and they are even better in concert. They were FUN. There were several songs from this album on their play list. They have a lot of energy and are really fun. They were with Nightwish and Delain, both very good bands -- and I have all of their albums, too -- but I felt that Sabaton stole the show. I feel that they put on the best concert that I had been to.

Sabaton excels at two things consistently, even through major band roster changes: compelling musical narratives, and horns-in-the-air hammering metal. They truly shine when they find a strong hook. Alas, this tends to happen only four to five tracks per Sabaton album, and Heroes is no exception.

First, the good… the concept of this album is superb. Individual tales of heroism in war, as lensed through a modern sensibility and thankfully clear of needless cultural bias. Listening to a Sabaton album is unapologetic history porn for many of us. Musically, we're treated to some true standouts, including the honorarium to Audie Murphy "To Hell and Back," the stirring "Hearts of Iron," and my personal favorite "Resist and Bite," their ode to the Chasseurs Ardennais. Their re-tooling of "7734" from the Metalizer album brings a nice spit-shine to an already enjoyable anthem.

Now, the not-so-good… we're up against what I might call the usual compliment of filler in this album. Heavy bass-thrum with so many lyrics hung upon a forgettable melody often lurch through the speakers like so much mud crammed into a combat boot. Particularly weak tracks include the dirge-like "Inmate 4859" and the opening track "Night Witches." Which brings us to "The Ballad of Bull," a competently crafted tune which was regrettably mishandled to the point of being unintentionally humorous. Unlike the exemplary "A Lifetime of War" from the Carolus Rex album, "Bull" manages to elicit more treacle than pathos… a rare belly-flop for Sabaton.

The weak tracks notwithstanding, Heroes remains an above-average listen. The production is tight, the content is gripping, and even though some of the musical writing falls short, we're still given strong, maul-striking metal that I'm sure will rouse a stadium of fans!
