good replacement for friction shifter
5 Stars
good replacement for friction shifter
I bought this to replace the bar-end friction shifter on my new recumbent bicycle. As the derailleur was a Shimano 7-speed Tourney TX with the "SIS index" logo, I felt confident enough that this shifter would be compatible. Installation was pretty much straight-forward -- I found a YouTube video showing me how. I now have solid and reliable index shifting. The only bad part is because of the orientation of the handlebar, I cannot see the current gear number.

This shifter comes with ALL the parts you need to change your old shifter including the cable and the cable end that you crimp to cap off the end after trimming the wire. It has sufficient cable length for 20" mountain bikes and needed to be trimmed by a couple of inches. The tools we had in our toolbox: a set of Allen wrenches to loosen the old shifter and slide it off the handle bar and then to tighten the new shifter, a 9mm crescent wrench (to remove and install cable from derailleur) and a standard wire crimping tool (which has a wire cutter built in so you can trim the cable and crimp the end cap on the cable).

We had a couple of 20" mountain bikes for our sons with Shimano derailleurs which came with some generic shifters. It was hard for me to shift and nearly impossible for our 8 y.o. with the shifter that originally came with his bike. Needless to say, we were worried about how hard it would be to fix this issue and nearly took the bikes back to the store but the kids really loved their bikes.

So, we braved the shifter replacement and it turns out... replacing the shifter was so simple that after I finished installing it on one bike, our 8 y.o. son installed it on his bike in record time!! The hardest part was removing the rubber grip off the handle bar (a thin Allen key to pry the end and squeezing some rubbing alcohol between the grip and the handle bar will greatly help in sliding off the grip). Simply remove the old cable by cutting off the tip by the derailleur and unscrewing the cable from the adjuster and remove the cable from the housing and chuck that old shifter in the trash. Route the new cable into the housing just as you pulled it out (but in reverse) and you will end up with the cable by the derailleur which you can then trim and crimp on the cable end. Adjust your derailleur - look up a YouTube video on how to make this adjustment if you don't already know how to adjust the derailleur. The 7 speed Shimano shifter has the crispest and most reliable shifts on our Shimano derailleur - it is incredible! So whether you are replacing a cheap and hard to twist shifter that came with your bike or a broken or malfunctioning shifter, you can easily replace it with this shifter and it will put a smile on your face, guaranteed!

Super easy to install, and works perfectly right off the bat.

I purchased this to replace a broken Sram Gripshift on my antique Hardrock, just an everyday knock-around bike. Installation took about 10 minutes, including setting the initial cable tension. Surprise, that's all it needed! Went for a ride to see if it actually worked, and it worked perfectly, no further adjustment needed. Pull the cable til it feels "kinda tight", snug down the nut on the derailleur, and that's all. Go for a ride and enjoy.

The downside: There's no adjustment on the shifter, so if you do need to adjust the cable tension, you'll have to do it at the derailleur. The cable is pre-loaded, and it's not obvious if it's replaceable if needed. (Counterpoint: the shifter cost ten bucks. The cable alone would be five.) Shifting action feels a little cheap, plasticky. Counterpoint: it's ten bucks, and works perfectly.

There are better shifters out there. But you'd be real hard-pressed to find one for the price.

This was a replacement for my hybrid bike's original RevoShift which cracked and would no longer shift smoothly. The plasticky quality is only fair, but when it works, it works well. Easy to install, easy to use, relatively easy to adjust for my bike's Shimano Altus rear derailer. Cheap enough to consider replaceable every several years -- the original lasted 7-8 years.

Fitting may be a minor problem for some bikes. The supplied cable and housing are shorter than the original, so it may it may be too short for some comfort hybrid or cruiser bikes with elevated upright handlebars -- you may need to order a longer cable/housing set. I'd already lowered my handlebars so the shorter cable was no problem -- in fact, I had to cut 6".

No lubrication necessary -- the inside of the supplied cable housing is lined with tough plastic and is self lubricating. It slides smoothly without any lube.

If you need to cut the cable and housing I'd recommend the Jagwire Pro Housing Cutter -- it's an excellent value compared with the Park and other more expensive tools. It cuts the cable housing cleanly without crushing or crimping.

These shifts look and work amazing. The shifts are super crisp and satisfying.

The installation is super easy taking me ~10 minutes.
But, it did take time to tweak the tension of the cable to get it the reach all 7 gears. The tweaking and test riding took ~20 minutes.

Overall this is totally worth the money if you have a old or broken gear shift and it can save you a fortune compared to getting a new bike or getting it professionally repaired.

Got this to replace a broken one on a old Mongoose D40 21 speed. As inexpensive replacement for a old bike is fine considering the price but for a new MTB build I will go for a better one. This one comes with the new cable attached, installation time is less than 20 minutes. Work as intended, the only thing I notice is the little window that show the shift position is cloudy not clear as the one pictured here. Why 3 stars? small shift window is cloudy. No adjustment on the grip to make it softer or harder. Recommended for old bikes or a cheap build. Shipping was quick and came in original box.

The shifter arrived pretty quickly, and it had a shifter cable included. Like all Shimano stuff, it works great and was easy to install. Good vendor, great product.

This fits with a 7speed derailleur, and had an easy, single bolt to tighten it onto the bar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Factory fit, worked as expected, 100%

The old Shimano friction shifter was slipping and the grip was gripless - time for new. This one went on in five mins, no sweat. Another five minutes of micro-adjustment and I was indexing with ease: one-click, one-ring in both directions. I have used this now daily for two hours each day on mixed surfaces/trails. Have not yet needed to adjust for cable stretch, but I suspect that might be next.

For me, this was a solid, no-brainer purchase.

Buen producto.

5.0 out of 5 stars installed perfectly fine
Reviewed in Canada on July 8, 2019
Installed perfectly fine on a 20" bike that I found on the curb -- the bike was refurbished for my son. The bike is a 1x7 set up with a Falcon Index System derailleur. The existing grip shift was rotted out and would only shift a couple of gears.

Bought this on a gamble and after tightening down the cable, it was able to shift through all of the gears with no effort. Easy install, more than enough cable.

Weirdly though, 7 is the smallest cog and 1 is the largest.
