Destined to Live: One Woman's War, Life, Loves Remembered Kindle Edition
Sabina Wolanski was just 12 years old when her home town in Poland was invaded by Nazis. In her diary, along with innocent adolescent longings, she recorded what happened next: the humiliations and terrors, the murder of her beloved family and the startling story of her own survival. Leaving Europe after the war, Sabina forged a new life in Australia, juggling a thriving design business, her family, and an unorthodox love life. But as time wore on, she began asking herself why had she survived when so many died? And what kind of justice fitted such crimes? In May 2005, when Germany opened its controversial Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, in Berlin, Sabina was chosen to speak as the voice of the six million dead. In her speech she noted that although the Holocaust had taken everything she valued, it had also taught her that hatred and discrimination are doomed to fail. Her ability to survive, to love, and to live well, has been her greatest triumph. 'I couldn't put down this engaging, honest story of love, loss and survival.' Diane Armstrong, bestselling author of tHE VOYAGER OF tHEIR LIFE 'important and wonderfully written' Australian Literary Review

- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2018I read many books about the jewish experience during ww2. I find them all fascinating and this book is no exception. This book delves into the author's postwar life more than most, and I enjoyed that part. I think many women could identify with her experiences with love and heartbreak. Highly recommend. Thank you for sharing your tragic and beautiful life story.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2016A very moving story.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2016At first, I thought the author was selfish and self centered. However, she was protecting herself and hiding her emotions. This book talks about racism and is much more than a memoir.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2018Every holocaust story is a little the same and a little different. I so much appreciate those who can endure remembering and help those of us who have no idea what they went through gain a little understanding. I think this one may have to be read twice, hard to say you loved reading about someone else's pain, I didn't, but I loved getting to know the author. Don't want to let her go.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2016Interesting read..lots of history!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2018At first I felt I was reading another of the many accounts of this horrific part of Jewish history. However, this is an account of one survivor's entire life following the war and returning only to tell her story as the sole family survivor. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to KNOW
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2018People hating people is the worst sickness I can think of. I will never understand how one awful man turned so many people against so many more people. My heart will always hurt for those cruel acts.
I pray we will never witness any thing like this again.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2016Excellent story. I spent most of the day reading it from start to finish. I just couldn't put it down! Sabina's story will stay with me for a very long time.
