Editorial Reviews

The Brill Building is an 11-story Art Deco office block at 1619 Broadway, Manhattan, the hub of the US music industry, it was where the songwriters who shaped 1950 and 1960s R&R, R&B and Pop music wrote and published their hit songs. It came to public prominence during the mid/late 1950s when the term 'The Brill Building Sound' was coined, to describe the R&R & R&B records being written (and in some cases, recorded) there. By common consensus, the late 1950s to early 1960s Brill Building 'first team' comprised seven song-writing duo's, Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller, Gerry Goffin & Carole King, Doc Pomus & Mort Shuman, Burt Bacharach & Hal David, Neil Sedaka & Howard Greenfield, Barry Mann & Cynthia Well and Jerry Barry & Ellie Greenwich. Other significant Brill Building songwriters at the time included Ben Raleigh, Jack Keller, Bob Hilliard, Phil Spector, Bert Berns, Hank Hunter, Helen Miller, Tony Powers, Larry Kolber, Artie Kaplan, Mark Barkan, Tommy Boyce, Bill Giant, Bernie Baum, Florence Kaye and Bobby Darin. Songs by all of the above are featured on this 64 track cornucopia of timeless pop music, which juxtaposes a plethora of hits and million sellers comfortably alongside a handful of obscurities and collector's rarities.

This CD compilation is everything I thought it would be. I have been buying music since I left school in 1963 & this gave me the chance to

pickup more of the great songs of the 60's. The track I have been after for years I finally got. The Playmates, "Tell me what she said"

    Thank you once again. JOHN.

This is a great compilation album. The real gem in this CD is Gene Pitney's "Take it Like a Man." This song was the B-side to
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence." I have never been able to find it either on CD or LP until this release. This song alone is worth the entire CD - although all the music is glorious.

There's a 4 CD box set, released around 92 or 93, that was way better than this. Look for that instead. There was one surprisingly good song on disc 2. The set didn't completely suck, but considering all the really good tunes that came from the Brill Bldg, this set is an utter disappointment. The item arrived way sooner than expected. No worries there.

A ton of great songs were written at the Brill Building years ago. Early songs written by Neil Diamond, Carole King, Neil Sedaka, Boyce and Hart, Mann & Weil, others. A must for any 60's music fan!

I enjoyed the THIS MAGIC MOMENT: THE SOUND OF THE BRILL BUILDING 2 CD set but I like other compilations better.

First off this double CD set focuses narrowly on the period between 1957-1962, the bulk being 60-62, and so there were lots of songs that were unfamiliar to me. That isn't an issue but I found most of the songs featured male vocalists who were trying to (or copying) Elvis Presley's sound and so that turned me off a bit.

Although the music itself isn't bad I found that most of the tracks were on the cusp - that period where there was a changing of the guard between the old crooners on the hit parade and the new "sound of young America" that would arrive with Motown and as some of these Brill writers honed their teeth and write more uptempo rock and roll - so most of these songs are rock in its beginning.

There are stand outs like Ruth Brown's 1958 "I Can't Hear A Word You Say" and Dion's "Dream Lover." I'm also partial to the "girl group" sound so maybe that's why I didn't go gaga over this CD.

This set comes with a booklet that has present day liner notes by Groper Odson who gives background information on the famous "Brill Building" and who all artists and writers were. Also included is song info that states whether it was an "A" or "B" side, year released, writer credit, and record company label.

Here's some suggestions for other 60s compilations that I like Be My Baby, Be My Baby 2, Born to Be Together: The Songs of Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil, and Phil Spector Wall of Sound Retrospective Philles Sound 1961-1996.

    3.0 out of 5 stars 華やかなり、アメリカン・ポップスの時代
Reviewed in Japan on February 7, 2020
1619 Broadway, Manhattan, New York City, New York(ニュー・ヨーク市マンハッタン、49丁目通り、ブロードウェイ1619)にあったブリル・ビルディングという建物。
