Abby Monkey is back, and this time she's brought her magic laptop! For those unfamiliar with Abby Monkey, she is a cute, friendly character that young children really love. This app is very much geared toward preschool learning, as it covers the basics (shapes, colors, numbers, common objects, etc.).

I use a lot of 22Learn apps as I work as a tutor and babysitter, and I recently purchased the Abby Monkey Magic Laptop for Preschool app as an activity for my young niece who I babysit. She will be starting preschool this upcoming year, and I thought this was just perfect for some educational playtime. The app reminds me of one of those talking phone toys most young children have, and even the youngest kids like to feel like they have their own 'technology'. The app is basically a board of buttons that children can press to their heart's content and learn from voice commands in the process.

The top half of the 'laptop' features a menu board of topics. Farm animals, toys, colors, zoo animals, vehicles, instruments, numbers 1-10 and then 11-20, alphabet, fruits, vegetables, and shapes are included. This is a pretty nice spread that seems to align well with what preschool children learn about in school. The top half also includes the ability to switch between the two functions- play mode and learning mode. A 'screen' area in the center displays information and pictures when the buttons are tapped.

The bottom half features all the objects in each category. For example, if you select colors, each of the 10 buttons will represent a different color. Pressing a button causes the app to say the name of the object, display an image of it, and play a related sound if possible (dogs will bark, trucks will go vroom, and colors will make various musical sounds). There are also buttons that say 'hello' and 'goodbye' in different tones and ways while displaying various faces. Other buttons play sounds and music. Images are full-color and beautifully illustrated, and the app features professional voiceovers which is a nice touch.

During play mode, users can simply tap around the app to learn the names of the objects and see pictures representing them. In learning mode, the app will ask users to find a specific object. Correct answers are rewarded with verbal praise, and incorrect answers will prompt the app to provide hints. Overall, I think it's a great app for kids, my niece loved it, and it includes every topic you could want covered in a basic learning app. It is definitely an app that needs to be enjoyed with the sound on, so it may not be great for on-the-go entertainment or when quiet is desired. Most children will enjoy pressing the many buttons and learning about their favorite things.

I don’t know about you, but I have never liked those kid’s learning things that vaguely look like a laptop (i.e., they fold up). They’re big and bulky, and are just another extra thing for parents to carry around. Sure they are educational, but they’re just clunky pieces of plastic. (suddenly, everything looks like an infomercial) There’s Got To Be A Better Way!? ©

Enter 22learn, Preschool All-In-One Learning Magic Laptop! After trying (and reviewing) several of their apps, with great results, I went ahead and bought this, as well. It gets rid of the big, multicolored plastic behemoth, and instead gives you the same interface, on your tablet! No really, the entire laptop is shown on screen, and everything that you would do on the actual device can be done here.

It has several categories, including letters, numbers, shapes, colors, animals, vehicles, fruits and vegetables, and musical instruments. It vocalizes the items that you are matching up, or asks you to find a specific item in that category. There is both a Play setting, and Let’s Learn setting. The modes are a little bit reversed, in my opinion. I would think that Play would be the game, and Let’s Learn would be practice, but the opposite is actually true. That’s just a little quibble that I have, certainly not enough for this app to lose a star!

If you have a small child (or like, a REALLY smart dog that knows English…) you should pick this up, if only for the fact that those kid’s laptops are around $20, and this is $1.99, and you won’t have to carry another “thing” with you!

We loved the phonics game from 22learn but our grandson hated this one and was totally bored and when I tried, I understood why. Wish I could apply it to another game!

This is a bit simplistic and annoying for me. So much more could have been done for a paid app... Though it occupied my 3 yo who will be 4 in a few months, for an hour, I can't imagine it holding her attention long term. The over the top praise is annoying- but might be better suited to 2 yrs to young 3's.

For those of you who read the reviews on Amazon; you know that I love the 22 Learn apps, and I use them on my Kindle Fire HD to help entertain my nieces and nephews when they come to play at my house. All of the apps are great, but this one is a huge hit for my 4 year old niece, Alaney. She l-o-v-e-s this one. The thought of getting to use her own laptop is apparently the coolest thing ever, lol. When she gets tablet time, this is her go to app. She says to me, “Aunt Penny, I’m working right now; don’t you have some work to do to?” Which is great because I usually do. I pull out my laptop and work beside her.

This app has lots of interactive little activities for kids to play with, and Alaney will play with this for as long as I need to work on my computer. It has many different puzzle and pattern games for her to work out, and no matter how many times she does them she is positively ecstatic when Abby Monkey tells her what a good job she is doing. Another home run for 22 Learn.

I've had great experiences with other apps by this company, so I decided to buy this for my 3 year old and it's a hit once again. The activities available and the fun graphics are perfect to keep children her age engaged, and the range of learning provided by one app is amazing. It has everything from numbers and letters to music, and the wide variety keeps her interested and keeps her learning! I couldn't recommend this app (and the other apps from this company that I've tried) more!

This is a cute little app. My son enjoys it, he is nearly 3 and finds it easy enough to use. I think the alphabet part would have been good with a phonetic option so it's what they learn at school but he's certainly copying sounds and words from it so I'm happy

Too much content for 2 year old - I think she prefers games presented with fewer options than an entire keyboard, an entire keyboard that can change in about 3 or 4 way....too much content for 2.5yr old but I imagine wuiteboring for 3.5yr old. I consider this one just a misjudged ap.
