- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2024Check Out Glen Campbell (and Karen Carpenter, Sammy Davis Jr.)
There are some relatively famous people who, nonetheless, are not on the short list for young musicians to check out. Sure we know to check out people like Les Paul, who literally changed the nature of recording but there are others whose skill was extremely high, but who for one reason or another, do not wind up on the "radar" of young musicians wanting to listen to the greats of the past.
Glen Campbell:
My trombone teacher was a studio freelance musician in Hollywood during the time where the "Wrecking Crew" was operating. As he went from session to session he remarked that he saw Glen Campbell on a huge number of recording sessions. He was struck with that being remarkable, and noted the guy really could play wonderfully. Later, as the years went by, Campbell became a world wide phenomenon with hit recordings featuring his singing, and even a TV show featuring him in all sorts of musical situations. What did not truly get out fully to the public, was how gifted Glen Campbell was both as a singer and as a guitarist. His hit recordings and TV show appearances rarely offered an opportunity to show off his top flight guitar technical ability, and instead featured his excellent singing typically in a large orchestra "pop" setting. Campbell, like Carpenters vocalist Karen Carpenter, had almost astounding sense of pitch, rarely scooping into notes, but simply singing straight into the next pitch, with high accuracy.
Luckily we can find on online video outlets various live events where Campbell got a chance to stretch out and really wail on Guitar. To be like this, and yet also be a good singer is quite and accomplishment. I think perhaps Steve Lukather comes to mind as a bit like this - really amazing both in guitar playing and as a singer (Lukather was the guy who pointed me to Sammy Davis Jr. saying: "You should check out this guy's singing"). The short list of "Pop" people the young should check out are: Sammy Davis Jr., Glen Campbell, Karen Carpenter. These recordings all were made before any sort of pitch correction was even available.
Ultimately because these people were in "pop" music, they get pigeon holed into less glory, but actually their skill levels were incredible, and thus, a listen to their famous hits is worth doing, just to get an idea of the skill I'm talking about. Also, some of these tunes wind up as epic chart topper and notable songwriting works - "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and "Wichita Lineman" are amazing songwriting accomplishments. When they were on radio airplay, they were omnipresent.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2025This CD has many of Glen Campbell's hits, some of which I'd forgotten. The musical accompanyment highlights both his singing abilities and finger-picking guitar accomplishments. A great talent-underrated. Wonderful "sing-along" music. My husband wants a second CD for his truck, too. I'm not tired of listening to it, yet.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2025Great product
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2024After listening to this, I remembered being like 10 to 15, and thinking my parents were SO OLD, enjoying Glen Campbell on venues like "The Lawrence Welk Show" (which was boring for a kid born in '59, and preferring rock, etc).
But now, I hear and recall emotions and memories from songs like "Wichita Lineman" and "Everyday Housewife", nearly weep, and realize just how great such songs were. (Great lyrics, themes, ideas, and wonderful music to go with it.)
This might well be that for anyone born after, say, the 70's, you just absolutely won't get it at all, but being able to sample such music on Youtube before buying is a wonderful thing, IMO.
