At its quietest moments, 2007's Memory Almost Full played like a coda to Paul McCartney's illustrious career; he seemed comfortable residing in the final act of his legend, happy to reflect and riff upon his achievements. Such measured meditation is largely absent from 2013's New, the first collection of original material he's released since 2007. New lives up to its title, finding McCartney eager, even anxious, to engage with modern music while simultaneously laying claim to the candied, intricate psychedelia of latter-day Beatles. Five decades into his career, reinvention isn't expected from McCartney, so the shock arrives in the avenues Paul chooses to follow and, here, he's enthusiastically embracing modernism and pop art. He brings in Mark Ronson, the producer best-known for hits by Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen, to add a bit of modern snazz, but sharp guy that he is, McCartney knows that contemporary pop albums are created by a fleet of producers, so Paul Epworth, a collaborator of Adele, Foster the People, and Florence & the Machine, is hired along with Ethan Johns (a veteran of Kings of Leon and Laura Marling) and Giles Martin (the son of Beatles producer George Martin), each enlisted to give New a crisp, clean sheen. There are a lot of cooks in the kitchen but the chef is undoubtedly McCartney, with every song -- from the kaleidoscopic title track to the delicate folk of "Hosanna" and the pounding, overstuffed "I Can Bet" -- bearing his unmistakable stamp. From the moment it opens with the insistent, propulsive "Save Us," this is a bright, vivid pop album, robust with color and so confident in its swagger that its assurance is alm

I'm allowing my excitement to push my star-rating up to five stars. (I'm going more with the "I love it" aspect than the "classic" designation.) After McCartney's last album, Kisses on the Bottom, I remarked in a review that it was basically to be seen as a diversion, a pleasant set of songs that he wanted to record but not a major statement. I hoped he would return the next time out with a rock/pop album that would pick up where Memory Almost Full left off. — Boy did he ever!

From the opening notes of "Save Us," McCartney once again shows the world that whether he's 21, 31, or 71, he can still rock out with the best of them. His energy level, songwriting skills, and musicianship remain incredible after all these years. "Alligator" has the kind of crazy Wings-style lyrics I've grown to appreciate over the yeas, but there's more depth in them now. The weight of history informs his lyrics in a powerful way. "New" (the song) sounds like the kind of music the Beatles may have made had they continued their legendary run.

McCartney knows how to make modern music while reflecting back on his near-mythic past. If he goes back to the well a bit frequently, I can certainly forgive that. I can only imagine what it must be like to have lived a life such as his. I'm sure it would take more than one lifetime to fully come to terms with what he's seen and accomplished.

Like Memory Almost Full, this is a great, modern McCartney album. He has plenty of producers on hand to give it a 2013 feel, but it's McCartney all the way. Great songs with strong melodies and lyrics; there isn't a bad song in the bunch. This is the last phase of McCartney's career, but he still sounds fresh and alive and, amazingly (as the title suggests) new. This is an album to cherish.

My granddaughter has shown an interest in photography. I have a camera similar to this one which she used all the time. I figured I’d get her very own camera. She loves it!!!

Believe it or not, Paul McCartney has released a new studio album. The album, New, is McCartney’s first album since last year’s Kisses On The Bottom, which saw McCartney taking on American standards. So this makes New McCartney’s first studio album of all original material since 2007’s Memory Almost Full. McCartney, now 71, has made an album that sounds very modern but also reminiscent of his work with the Beatles, Wings and his solo career.

For this album, McCartney decided to do something interesting: for each song, they are produced by either one of four producers- Giles Martin (son of Beatles producer, George Martin), Ethan Johns, Mark Ronson and Paul Epworth. This is an interesting move for McCartney since it’s not common for someone like him to have multiple producers. Still, the final product is impressive.

The album opens with “Save Us”, a fuzz guitar-driven rock song. The song is pretty catchy while McCartney sounds fine. It’s no lie: McCartney’s voice has seen better days but for what he can pull off at his age is remarkable. “Alligator” is a bouncy track with slightly whimsical lyrics while a song like “On My Way To Work” is somewhat autobiographical. “On my way to work/I rode a big green bus” McCartney sings. “I could see everything/From the upper deck/People came and went/Smoking cigarettes.” The acoustic dominating “Early Days” is another autobiographical song, in which McCartney recalls the days of his youth with his “hair slicked back with Vaseline” and visiting the local record shops.

Even at 71, McCartney still delivers with great pop songs. “Queenie Eye” is very catchy bopping pop tune as is the self-titled track, which is the lead single from the album. The latter is a personal favorite; as it sounds surprisingly much like something the Beatles would’ve done in the mid to late 1960s (“Penny Lane” comes to mind). “I Can Bet” yet another catchy tune that sounds like something he would’ve made with Wings except modernized with voice effects and electronics. McCartney even knows how to end an album with class- the piano line in “Road” brings back memories of the piano heard in “Nineteen Hundred Eighty Five” from Band On The Run. There’s even a hidden track called “Scared”, similar to how “Her Majesty” is a hidden track from Abbey Road.

New is a surprisingly good album from Paul McCartney. I’m quite impressed. I would go as far to saying this is his first solid album since 2005’s Chaos and Creation in the Backyard, in which all of the songs are good. If you’re a fan of McCartney, I don’t see why you shouldn’t have the album already.

But the whole album is very good, and there are some stand outs!

I got to see Sir Paul live in concert, and when he played Queenie Eye, I was like, "How do I NOT know about this song??" Everybody sang along, and I felt left out!

The video is super cool, too!

I'm a long time fan. I guess I'm kinda old now. His music is part of my DNA, so I'm gonna love it. Sure, not every song is stellar, but Paul at his worst is better than most current artists at their best.

There is much to like immediately about New and there is much that takes getting used to. I sometimes think that Sir Paul treats life like one long, giant jam session. There is not much that is melodic (Everybody Out There is an exception) on this effort; some may even consider parts of the compilation "challenging". That said, if you like pretty much everything that McCartney has done, this album will grow on you over several listening sessions. The songs are a bit more aggressive then most folks are used to coming from McCartney. It is a bit of a restless work and works well if you are in one of those moods that likes a little edge to their listening experience.

It really is just as the title says --NEW--!!! It's a different Paul McCarthney than I grew up with but still the the same level of entertainment and enjoyability of his music…Keep on Sir Paul! Keep on……..
ANd yes if you like McCarthney music I would tell you to buy it (after you've listened to the samples, of course)

Wow.. best Sir Paul album since flowers in the dirt! There's such a blend of familiar sounds here... there's a touch of Beatles, touch of Wings, and of course solo McCarntey as well. It almost feels like a nostalgic cd which goes through his history in music. It's bloody brilliant!
