Editorial Reviews
From the Back Cover
Part of John Muir's appeal to modern readers is that he not explored the American West and wrote about iys beauties but also fought for their preservation. His successes dot the landscape and are evident in all the natural features that bear his name: forests, lakes, trails, and glaciers. Here collected are some of Muir's finest wilderness essays, ranging from Alaska to Yellowstone, from Oregon to the High Sierra.
John Muir was a Scottish-born American naturalist, author, early advocate of preservation of wilderness in the United States, and founder of The Sierra Club. His letters, essays, and books of his adventures in nature have been read by millions.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2024What a book! John Muir is a hugely observant and astounding writer. He puts details and descriptions in total focus. He puts you right there with him. What a gift Muir was and still is, with this book as a fine example. My husband got this book from me for his birthday. He was totally memorized and adored the book. It stays in our downsized bookcase forevermore. If I could give more stars, I would.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2016What can I say? It's a collection of works from the late, great John Muir. The man is legendary. His writing may come across as a little dry to modern readers, but then most works written in that time period tend to be. It is mainly his observations of the natural world around him. It is very good and for those interested in Muir this is a nice collection of his essays and the book cover is quite lovely in person.
My main complaint is that I do wish he wrote more about the details of his day to day life. What he ate, what shelter, if any, he lived in? He doesn't talk much about that kind of stuff. Mainly just describing what he sees, which can get a little boring after a while to be honest.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2024Oh how I long for the days when writing actually painted a mental picture as clear and beautiful as this. John Muir was a wordsmith of the highest order. This should be essential reading for anyone interested in writing.......or nature.........or hiking.........or being a human. Yet saddens me that his world is gone, never to return. We now have folks attempting to take selfies with buffalo and grizzly bears.........instead of absorbing nature as it was meant to be.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2019I really didn’t know what to expect when picking this up, I just thought it would be interesting to read more from the legend John Muir. This is not an adventure novel, or even really that exciting of a read. But, it is a great journal of the beauty of nature and written by someone who really knows how to write about what he sees. Even just reading 2 of the essays so far, it gets me excited to get outside and experience more of what he saw that caused him to sit and write about it!

5.0 out of 5 stars At one with nature.
A good collection of stories from one of the great nature writers, travels in Alaska, Yosemite The Mountains of California and many more, John Muir is a person at one with nature and his love of the wilderness shines through these stories.
