Yesterday, about noon, I received this George Washington Headquarters Revolutionary War flag. Bright and early that afternoon, I ironed the flag (to remove the creases caused by folding). By nightfall, the flag was on display, above the headboard of my sleeping area, which is not a bed, but a generous expanse of hardwood floor, covered by a quilt of down: all and all, a relatively hard surface reminiscent of my nights spent camping under the stars -- for real! -- in four trips across the United States, by bicycle. Sleeping upon my "flinty and steel couch of . . . thrice-driven down, I do agnize a natural and prompt alacrity I find in hardness." (Shakespeare, Othello, Act I, scene iii).
Last night, out of the weather; inside of doors; ensconced within the sanctum sanctorum of my spartan boudoir; snoozing beneath the canopy of this newly arrived, freshly ironed, perfectly positioned flag, I had the best of both worlds, as I slept "under the stars," in the warmth and comfort of home sweet home.
And what a sleep it was! Vivid dreams galore, bordering on nightmares, one of which featured "yours truly" capturing a groundhog, in the wild, with my bare hands. Yes, I was barehanded. But no, the groundhog was not. He, she, or it had claws and teeth a plenty. And was vicious. So, I let the damn thing go. Then, I went right back to sleep, without ever having woken up in the first place.
That may not make sense technically. But why trifle with technicalities? Here, technicalities would keep me from saying what I want to say -- and mean to say -- to the receptive-and-perceptive reader, whomever he or she may be.
Having had my say; 'Tis time to hit the hay. Sweet dreams! And, to all, a good night. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz . . .
P.S. George Washington himself designed this flag for his headquarters. Or so I am told. The thirteen stars on this flag are arranged in a pattern that is symmetrical, no matter how you slice it -- whether horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. While all that is all very linear, the six stars that surround the central star seem to go around it in a circle, as if orbiting it.
P.P.S. If only I had been allowed eight more stars for my review, I would have given thirteen stars, rather than the maximum of five. If only!
