This 6-Movie Most Wanted Westerns Collection is well worth the time, $, and effort. The price I paid was not even the price of two movies, so, although no extras of any kind every movie can be seen the way they were meant to be seen: widescreen. The sound is appropriate on this 2013 DVD collection by Sony. My only immediate recommendation is to watch The Missing with as little light in the room as possible. The Missing has multiple nighttime scenes that can be difficult to see (avoid daytime glare et cetera).

Sony used three discs (two movies on each) which are stacked on each other. Yes, it’s kinda cheap that way but it works.

I initially bought this collection because of Silverado. I watched Silverado close to 10 times on cable in mid-late 80’s and wanted to see the theatrical version, not cut up on AMC network. Story goes Writer-Director Lawrence Kasdan promised Kevin Costner a role in his next movie after being left on the cutting room floor ‘coffin’ in The Big Chill. Costner is highly entertaining as the boyish gunslinger who can’t avoid trouble in Silverado: ‘All I did was kiss the girl.’
    ‘That’s why you’re in jail?’
    ‘Well, HE drew first.’
Kevin Kline is ‘bad luck’ Paden. Scott Glenn and Costner are the good guy brother’s who are just trying to meet up with their family while Danny Glover returns home to find his family is about to lose the farm while his sister (Lynn Whitfield) is working as a prostitute.
It’s all black and white, good versus bad with the obvious injustice bringing Kline, Costner, Glenn and Glover face to face with Brian Dennehy and his crooked lawmen. Dennehy does the smug, cocky, intimidating, smirking villain thing very well.
The women are the diminutive Linda Hunt as the ‘Star’ bar owner while Rosanna Arquette, Amanda Wyss, and Whitfield round out this entertaining eye and brain candy western.
The Quick and The Dead (1995) is the other not as realistic but entertaining movie on this collection (appropriately on the same disc as Silverado). Sharon Stone is the star getting to play the silent, spaghetti western role looking to avenge the murder of her father (Gary Sinise). Gene Hackman began to get typecast as the screaming, bullying sheriff (see Unforgiven) or military officer (Crimson Tide) while Leonardo DiCaprio portrays his son who wants to be a gunfighter. DiCaprio and Russel Crowe—as a preacher being forced to fight in the ‘high noon showdowns’—are both better in their roles than the movie may deserve.
Lotsa’ cool gun fighter cameos with even cooler camera angles as directed by Sam Raimi (Darkman; Spider Man, The Evil Dead)

Another disc has Geronimo; and Major Dundee. These two have direct storylines involving renegade Apaches.
I had owned a horrible pan and scan version of Geronimo, so, I was very happy to see this underrated Walter Hill western in widescreen. Jason Patric stars and is pretty amazing as an actor who portrays so much while being so mellow. Matt Damon was a no name when Geronimo was released in 1993. His character narrates the proceedings as the US Military attempts to bring in the famed Apache leader peacefully. Robert Duvall stands out as the grizzled veteran tracker helping to find Geronimo. Wes Studi (Last of The Mohicans) is appropriately impressive as the Apache legend.
Major Dundee (1965) was directed by Sam Peckinpah and the rather famed production difficulties do seem to show. The movie is disjointed and seems longer than Silverado —which it is not. Major Dundee is 124 minutes long; Silverado a fast paced 130 minutes—and Dundee seems to end very suddenly. Strange. But, it is not all bad with any scene involving Richard Harris a plus. Charleston Heston plays the titular lead who must try to convince a band of southern prisoners to fight Apaches who killed everyone at a Union Army Outpost. Peckinpah would make his classic The Wild Bunch four years later.

The last disc of two movies is The Professionals (1966); and Missing (2003).
The Professionals is considered a classic western…and I don’t quite see why. Lee Marvin would give the same performance in The Dirty Dozen a year or so after The Professionals (not that that’s a bad thing) and The Dirty Dozen is a much better, much more entertaining and funnier action movie than The Professionals. But, don’t entirely misunderstand. The Professionals is still worth watching helped by the character development of Claudia Cardinale’s role. I can watch Claudia in any phase of development and be most pleased. Love her accent, as well as the other obvious assets. Her English was improving movie by movie; and I can see why Miss Cardinale was cast in the Sergio Leone epic Once Upon a Time In The West two years later.
Cardinale portrays the kidnapped wife The Professionals are hired to find. Jack Palance the Mexican kidnapper. Burt Lancaster is along for the star power ride. It’s not a bad ride but if anyone is truly surprised by the end…well, I just don’t see why The Professionals so highly regarded. The Professionals is Directed by pro Richard Brooks who helmed Blackboard Jungle in 1955 and the original In Cold Blood (1967) a year after The Professionals.
The Missing was Directed by Ron Howard and his stab at a gritty western is quite dusty, and dirty and dangerous and realistically brutal. Cate Blanchett is nothing short of brilliant as the western American mother, on her own, whose daughter is taken by Indians forcing her to ask for help from her father (Tommy Lee Jones) who abandoned her years ago to live with the Apaches(!). Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld) as the kidnapped teenager is another plus.
I was a little surprised how much Indian, witch doctor magic and the supernatural is ‘real’ in this otherwise very realistic, violent western.
So, check this out even 3 liked movies at 21$ Is a steal. 4.5 stars. Even the ‘bad’ lesser movies are basically 4 star movies.

These are 6 of the greatest westerns out of Hollywood. And they are surprisingly high quality copies as well. All 6 movies are in Widescreen and 5.1 surround. This collection would normally sell for over $60 as separate movies. But in this 6-Pack, they only cost $1.66 each. Worth every penny.

Double features on the discs was a disappointment, but I had only myself to blame for not figuring it out that 6 movies on 3 discs could be problematic for the way I watch DVDS. I have now bought the individual films I actually want and am listing these double feature discs to sell.
