Product Description
In this seductive spy thriller based on the best-selling novel by John Le Carré, Academy Award winner Geoffrey Rush (Shine) delivers a dazzling performance as Harry Pendel, an ex-con turned tailor to the rich and infamous and married to smart and sexy Louisa (Jamie Lee Curtis, True Lies). Directed by Academy Award nominee John Boorman (Hope and Glory, Deliverance) and set in steamy Panama, where nothing is what it seems, Andy Osnard (Pierce Brosnan, The Thomas Crown Affair), a suave and ruthless British spy, entices Harry into eavesdropping on the powerful politicians he clothes. But Harry's talent for storytelling compels him to weave an elaborate tale that's not only taken as truth, but sets off a chain of events that threaten to destroy everything he treasures most in life.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2021This is a quirky comedy that could have been an alternate path of James Bond. Pierce Brosnan is definitely channeling his Bond character, but with a twist. Geoffrey Rush plays his part with a great deal of brilliance. I never fully appreciated his acting until I saw this movie, and Jamie Lee Curtis ... well, she is her talented self. A cameo by master espionage novelist John le Carré adds a touch of irony. I will not give away the plot, but I will say that the entire cast represented a perfect selection of chemistry and acting, and the script itself is a masterpiece of smart comedy that is so well developed that I was truly in awe.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2021An excellent story by Le Carre with a weak ending in the book. But, his changes for the film turned it into a first rate experience. I liked the positive ending. The ending in the book was unsatisfying and confusing and seemed to long for a literary, existential, harsh-reality ending without sufficient supporting detail. But, I enjoyed both and recommend both.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2022I love so much about this film!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2014The blueray, and the sound were good. However, I must say I was a little disappointed with the movie. The acting was O.K., but the story was not very good. There were a lot of flashbacks that made the story hard to follow. Than there was a lot of sex , which did not seem to have a place in this film except maybe to eat up 30 minutes of time.
This movie seemed to be a very poor rehash of the very good spy movie of Alec Guinness in OUR MAN IN HAVANA.
I don't think I would buy this movie again, but like I say it's not the most terrible movie ever made.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2024Generally like Pierce Brosnan -- even when he plays an evil soul -- but this movie was too much of a plodding rip-off of the late 50's "Our Man in Havana" and not as interesting. Brosnan attempts to seduce every female in the cast -- even Jamie Lee Curtis with a butch cut and shoulders like Arnold Schwarzenegger. (Someone ought to turn a cold hose on ol' Pierce!)
Add befuddled MI6 factotums and a stiff upper lip and all that pip-pip-tickety-boo and, well, it didn't hold up all that well -- especially when the sub-main characters start dropping out and the plot thins like sliced baloney in a Jewish die.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2016It's a spy thriller that succeeds at dramatizing the cost of deception at the micro, family level and the macro, nation level. It's a delicious role for Pierce Brosnan to inhabit--a sort of twisted, amoral riff on James Bond. Geoffrey Rush, as usual, brings profound talent. He's empathetic, pathetic, and redemptive. Rush conveys all the overwhelming weight on nation-building and regime change with his visage.
The score is sensational and the Panama photography is beautiful.
