    Good $5 Fountain Pen

    Good $5 Fountain Pen
When I was in my 20's I purchased a Waterman fountain pen that cost $80, which was no small change in those days. I never really used it, fearing I might damage or lose it. Of course, I shelved it somewhere and it was eventually lost. Now I'm in my 50's and I happened to run across these $5 fountain pens and out of curiosity purchased two: X450 and X750.You have to realize that this is a $5 pen, and most reviewers will overlook minor deficiencies because of the price. With that in mind, I think this is a wonderful $5 fountain pen.The pens arrived in a brown padded envelop with little to no packaging and no tags or instructions. But once you wash the nib with dishwasher soap and water, and put ink in them the pen will write wonderfully. It's definitely a medium stroke, with generous ink flowing through so that you have to dry the ink before touching them (some might say it's too wet, but isn't that why we use fountain pens?).I don't know much about No. 6 nib and exchanging it for something better. I suppose if you are a pen aficionado this might be fun to do; but I just write with what I have and if it breaks I get another $5 pen. Since it's $5 and the parts are interchangeable (x450 parts will fit x750) if something breaks or paint peels off and you want to get another, you can always keep the pen parts as spare.I liked these pens so much, that I purchased another three in different colors. The difference in quality was remarkable. In one pen, the cap closed too tightly. In another, the posting of the cap scratched the paint finish. Yet in another the paint finish showed little blemishes and eventually peeled off. Go figure. For $5 I guess you can't really ask for QC.But if you ever wondered about writing with a fountain pen, this is a good place to start. It's really fun to see people's reaction when you pull out your fountain pen to write or sign something.

Like most people who are curious about what pen to get as a beginner, I searched the web and most blogs/reviews would point you to the $15 pilot metropolitan. It made sense, made in Japan by a reputable brand with thousands of reviews. There were mentions of this JINHAO x750 here and there, but it's made in China and it's only $5. It sounds cheap both in price and built quality. Seems like a no brainer, right?

Well, I ended up getting 3 different beginner pens, the pilot metro, the TWSBI ECO and this jinhao x750. The pilot and TWSBI arrived first and I was totally underwhelmed. Sure the built quality is nice but they both are scratchy and write no better than a $2 gel pen.

A week later the JINHAO x750 arrived from China, and without much expectation, the performance of the pen blew me away. I inked it with Noodler's eel ink and it starts writing smoothly without any priming.

It performs admirably on cheap staples copy paper with ample ink flow verse the other two pens struggle except on nice and smooth hammermill #32 paper.

Unposted, it fits fine in my slightly above-average large hand. Its all-metal body has a substantial weight yet not overly heavy writing unposted.

Oh, and its nib is a true medium size, unlike the pilot and TWSBI which run a size too small (pilot's fine is way too narrow, I would not recommend unless that's your writing style).

$5 JINHAO x750 pen together with a bottle of Noodler's ink ($12.5) run you $17.5, just 3 dollars more than the pilot (which comes with a single cartridge) and the ink will last you a long while (verse my pilot cartridge already ran out after writing 15 pages of journal, and I don't plan to re-order).

Highly recommended that you simply order from a seller with prime shipping for $2 more so you can enjoy writing with it right away :)

I got this pen after waiting a month for delivery. So, believe the delivery estimate if they tell you a month to get the pen. The pen was sent directly from China.

The description of this silver pen says it’s a “broad” Nib. I loaded it up with Noodler’s Baystate Blue. It writes more like a medium. This pen writes smoothly out of the box with no adjustment.

The pen contains an inexpensive but functional converter just like other models of Jinhao. Unlike more expensive pens, the converter does not contain an agitator to break the surface tension of the ink. So, some fiddling may be necessary if the pen skips or does not write due to the ink getting stuck up in the converter. This may or may not be a problem based on which ink you use.

The pen is metal and heavy. I found it a bit slippery to hold – but nothing to which you can’t adapt. The cap fits tightly. When posting the cap on the pen, it has a good friction fit.

This silver pen is a Jinhao model X750. The nib in this pen is keyed friction fit. So, you can remove the feed and nib by tugging gently and pulling the nib (and feed) out. Or, put a piece of tape on the nib and use that to pull out the nib. Using the tape method reduces the risk of bending the tines when removing the nib by squeezing and pulling with your fingers.

The model X750 uses a common #6 nib. You can easily buy replacement nibs in this size. So, for example, if you don’t like the nib that comes with the pen you can go buy any (or all) of extra fine, fine, medium, broad, and stub nibs from a place like Goulet Pens and just swap them in. Other models, like the Jinhao 250 use a smaller size nib which may be harder to find.

      Summary

This is a usable, nice looking, entry level, inexpensive fountain pen from China. The model X750 has the advantage of using a #6 nib. So, if you are new to fountain pens or if you want to experiment with different nibs then this pen can be your base of operations. Given that it’s so inexpensive, it can be a daily writer that travels with you. If the pen gets stolen or lost - given the cost - no big deal. For $10 and free shipping from China, you really can’t go wrong.

Recently I began teaching my elementary students the lost art cursive writing as an extra-curricular activity. In order to facilitate the excitement, I introduced fountain pens. I have purchased class sets of the Pilot varsity out of my own pocket. My students have expressed a desire to use my personal pens which are somewhat more expensive. I purchased three of these with some trepidation. I was concerned about the quality of such a cheap pen. Now after a week of use, I am nothing but pleased. Additionally, the ability to refill the pen actually makes it more economical to the similarly priced disposable Pilot Varsity current in use by my students. At about $3 per pen, I will probably buy another class set. Even in a couple turn out to be bad, it is worth it to provide my students with a nice and solid pen with which to learn the art of cursive writing.

For this kind of price, the JinHao X750 is a great deal for just a couple of dollars. Although it isn't as luxurious or expressive as other beginner pens, it's hard to pass up the price.

      Remarks
      - Medium nib. Comparing it to the Pilot Metropolitan, it's only slightly larger than the Japanese Medium of Pilot nibs. As expected. Writes well.
      - Aluminum body is nice. It does add a fair amount of weight to the pen but still feels balanced. Posting the cap does make the pen very top heavy, though.
      - Overall build quality is nice. The aluminum body doesn't feel paper thin. This feels like a very sturdy pen.
      - Comes with an international size converter and no ink. You will have to either purchase international size cartridges or bottled ink.

My only complaint, albeit a minor one
      - When posting the cap, it feels like I have to really force the cap on if I don't want it wiggling off when writing.

Compra bastante recomendada. 5.0 out of 5 stars A review and comparison with the X450
Reviewed in India on August 3, 2019
The media could not be loaded.
The Jin Hao X750 is the more utilitarian version of the Jin Hao X 450 for being a little lighter and looking like a very sleek everyday carry pen. The writing experience is as good as the 450 with a bit of additional control due to lighter weight which in no means is to undermine the 450 which renders the same control after some practice. Both the X 450 and X 750 are superiorly built and are absolutely worth their price. The nibs in both are the same with the exception of the appearence and are just rightly smooth to provide the appropriate feedback for a feeling and control in writing and also with the perfect technique, if one possess, the nibs go towards being an artist's tool producing line variations that are delightful to the writer and adorable to the reader. Both can equally serve the purpose of both writing and being elegant and grand collection items that too at the most affordable prices. Stock and price should be maintained for both.

5.0 out of 5 stars An «all trade» adaptable pen, my favorite.
Reviewed in Canada on November 19, 2016
As usual this Jinhao X 750 is a good surprise!. Came in in time and writes better than I expected. This is also a great pen for «transformation» into FUDE or FLEX pens with Zebra's -G nibs.I bought three of them. One to use as is, another one to make a flex pen, changing the original nib for a Zebra G, and last but not least, the third one to make a FUDE pen (by delicately bending the tip of the Zebra nib with plyers). For me, FUDE pens works better than Flex pens, both for illustration and writing. I don't see why one should pay over 20$ for «flex» pens (like Noodler, which I found too hard and not really «flex practical») when one can make oneself for half that price?! This has become my «all trade» pen as an illustrator! Use it both for calligraphy, drawing, and plain handwriting!
