- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2025Very entertaining and humor adds to the enjoyment of the movie.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2013When I was about ten years old some 45 years ago I remember my grandparents giving me a hardcover book of ghost stories each with an introduction by Alfred Hitchcock. In fact if I remember correctly the series was called "Alfred Hitchcocks Bed Time Stories:.
Well, between the books and the television show my fascination with Alfred Hitchcock began early on.
Brilliant, one of a kind, a maverick and a deeply flawed human being. However he was in every way a true master of movie making and an editor beyond reproach. The latter something I especially liked seeing included in "Hitchcock" because it's really there - in the editing room where movies are made.
Hundreds and often thousands of hours of film are whittled down to a seamless ninety minutes of magic.
Anthony Hopkins is marvelous as "Hitch' his movements, voice syntax are spot on. The makeup spectacular and the transformation is brilliant. Oddly there were many times I could hear Hannibal Lechter in the voice and see Him in "Hitches" slow turning gaze and the even slower closing eyes.
Perhaps because the real Hitchcock carried and expressed himself much like the fictional Lechter I don't know. However, I do know Hopkins is a national treasure and that there is no trace of Lecter in any of his post "Silence" films. Regardless, the performance is stunning and a kick to watch.
The entire cast is smashing. Helen Mirran is sheer perfection as Alma, Hitchcock's wife, muse, editor, writer, co director, protector and touch stone. And it's here inside their relationship that the story unfolds. They were certainly a unique and formidable team and the film pays tribute to a relationship as uncanny and unique as the movies they created.
The entire cast is sensational a few standouts being Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh, Toni Collette as Hitchcocks long time assistant Peggy Robertson - and a remarkable performance by James D'Arcy as Anthony Perkins, every movement, his voice, his appearance is a bulls eye it's absolutely uncanny.
At it's heart "Hitchcock " is a love story, those looking for an in depth look at how Psycho was made may be disappointed, those hoping to find a bit of what made one of the most prolific directors in the history of the world tick will adore every moment of this film.
It's an endearing and brilliant homage to one the greatest directors of all time.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2024I enjoyed the dynamic collaboration of Hitchcock and his wife, as well as the disagreements and devotion to each other.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2020"Hitchcock" is NOT TO BE MISSED if you are an Alfred Hitchcock fan or a fan of his movies. It is a superb telling of a fascinating man and his talented wife, Alma. Anthony Hopkins embodies Hitchcock in an excellent performance. Helen Mirren is a sheer delight as the nuanced Alma, without which Hitch could be somewhat lost. Scarlott Johansson gives a lovely, beautiful performance as Janet Leigh. I was less taken with Jessica Biel's performance as Vera Miles. It was a stretch for someone whose physical characteristics are so far removed from Vera Miles; Vera was usually a blond, thin lips, and fair skinned who portrayed roles with a slight chill, a Cool China Doll. Jessica's attributes are more exotic, dramatic & warm-blooded, making her "Vera" not quite on point; however, she still delivers a good performance. Toni Collette as Peggy, Hitch's assistant is strong, as is James D'Arcy as Anthony Perkins. The details of Hitchcock's life, off & on the sound stage, as well as the making of "Psycho" were fascinating, thought-provoking & wholly entertaining. Don't miss this incredible movie.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2017Must see for Hitchcock fans.
It's not just the story but there are impressions of Hitchcok style throughout the film.
I knew he was ingrained in my psyche but for example, one scene is reminiscent of a classic Hitckcock car scene & it gave me a chill.
Anthony Hopkins is brilliant as always. Got sucked into Westworld bc of him.
Helen Mirren is fantastic as his wife and, she doesn't just play a supporting role, she has her own storyline.
There is plenty going on to keep your attention yet the picture doesn't lose its focus, the history of Psycho.
Two new things I learned. It was based on actual true story.
Hitchcock sought it out & funded on his own bc at age 60 his relevance, to continue after a successful career, was questioned.
Psycho was his Swan Song to prove he would always have a voice.
There is one other fantastic twist that runs parallel to the main story line but, I don't want to ruin it for you.
Just know... It. Is. Good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good evening!
At the risk of sticking my neck out defending a film that no one seemed to like, I have to say that, if you're a Hitchcock fan - and particularly a fan of Psycho - this is a thoroughly entertaining romp.
A lot of people have compared it unfavourably to The Girl which starred Toby Jones as Hitch and, while Jones did the voice better, neither actor looks anything like the Master of Suspense so disbelief has to be...er...suspended, extensive plastic surgery obviously not being a realistic option (Anthony Hopkins suffers from having a face that is SO familiar; Toby Jones looks like he shrank in the wash).
As for the 'authenticity' of this film vs The Girl, the critics seem to have fallen hook, line and sinker for Tippi Hedren's version of events (as seen in The Girl) but I wonder. Hedren is a terrible, utterly wooden actress (her daughter, Melanie Griffith. is even worse) who unquestionably owed her career to Hitchcock. Yes, it was mean of him not to release her from her contract after Marnie, but do we really think she would have had a glittering career if he had? We've SEEN her in The Birds and Marnie: she's hopeless. As for whether Hitchcock assaulted her in quite the way pictured in The Girl, would she really have come back and finished The Birds and then signed up for Marnie following that? If so, what does that say about her ambition, her dignity and her reliability as a witness?
As for THIS film, well, there's a bit of artistic license in the subplot concerning Alma and Whitfield Cook and the dialogue is occasionally crammed so heavy-handedly with exposition that it clunks a bit (right from the scene-setting reporter's question at the North by Northwest premiere which begins the film) but don't let this blind you to the good things which abound here. There is great wit in the script (bookending it a la Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Funeral March of a Marionette and all, is genius), the facts are basically accurate and the darker side of Hitch's personality (which might not have been AS dark as some amateur Freudians without a sense of humour like to suggest) is clearly incorporated. Helen Mirren is brilliant as Alma and the film points out very clearly what a collaborative team husband and wife were throughout his entire career. As for James D'Arcy as Anthony Perkins, I don't think I've seen a better portrayal of a well-known actor by another actor in my life. Ever!
So if you're a Hitchcock fan, do give it a chance. I think you won't be disappointed.
