Editorial Reviews
Halestorm started writing for this record while they were on the road in 2010. Then when the band finished the Uproar Tour in May 2011, they entered the studio with producer Howard Benson (3 Doors Down, Seether, Three Days Grace) and tracked one of the heaviest songs of their career. The album is heralded by the electrifying single, "Love Bites (So Do I)." The track - as well as "Here's To Us", which was featured in Glee's midseason finale, are featured on Halestorm's EP, Hello, it's Mz. Hyde, which is available at all leading digital retailers.
This release includes the addition of a new track, "Here's To Us (Guest Version)"
The Strange Case Of... marks Halestorm's first release since ReAniMate: The CoVeRs eP, which saw the band putting their unique stamp on a diverse collection of classic songs, including tracks by Guns N' Roses, The Beatles, Heart, Temple Of The Dog, Skid Row, and Lady Gaga. Halestorm also unleashed their first-ever live CD/DVD, Live in Philly 2010, featuring such favorites from the band's self-titled debut as "It's Not You," "Familiar Taste of Poison," and the rock radio smash "I Get Off."

- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2025Great CD no problems
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2012The songs included on The Strange Case Of... are excellent from beginning to end. When the band mentioned in interviews leading up to the release of the album that the album was different, the heavier songs heavier and the softer songs softer, I was slightly skeptical, in most cases that's code for a band trying to find a more mainstream sound and radio success. However, that's not the case here, the hard songs have even more edge than their debut album, the ballads are beautifully written (though I wish they had included one with a haunting "Familiar Taste Of Poison" type sound), and there's enough songs to fill the space in between to keep the album from feeling too bipolar. The song writing shows growth in my opinion, musically and vocally the album sounds like a step up compared to their debut album. There really isn't a bad song on the album, but the two songs that stand out to me the most are "I Miss The Misery" and "Here's To Us". If you liked Halestorm's debut album you'll definitely enjoy this album, the band has definitely evolved but hasn't changed too much. Haven't had a chance to see the new songs live yet but they sound like they'll translate very well to being performed live.
I have two complaints about the album, neither of which say anything about the quality of the songs included. The first is that the deluxe version of the album at this time is only available if you buy the physical disc. Like many, I gave up on buying physical CDs a few years ago. Why not make the deluxe version available for everyone, not just the people willing to still buying physical CDs? Luckily Amazon had the album on sale right after it came out so it was a good deal and I'll probably pick up the extra tracks once they're available for download but it's still annoying. Second complaint, I'm not a fan of the order of the songs on the album. Three slow songs in a row is too much, they should have saved one of them for the second to last song ("Here's To Us is a great closer) and put a heavier song after the other two, after slowing it down I think it works best for albums to bring it right back to something heavy and "Rock Show" is a little too mid-tempo in my opinion.
Other than the lack of digital deluxe version and order of songs, no complaints about the album. Halestorm is one of the best "new" bands out there and this album is a great addition to the music they have already released.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2023I've been going through a sort of musical renaissance lately in what I listen to. When I was in college, I had no money, and it was the Golden Age of Post Punk/NewWave (Banshees, Cure, Bunnymen, etc.), and so that's where I've been doing most of my retroactive album-buying, and very much enjoying it. So these days, it may seem a little out of character to get into Halestorm, and this album has proven itself to be a great intro. Lot's of anthemic material, solid hooks that can stand next to pretty much anything in the "thunderous, majestic, yet sizzling-and-sexy" category. And there's the wonderful pair, "Beautiful With You," and "In your Room." As a misfit kid, four decades ago, I could have related then, and can relate now to those songs. Being married to a fellow former misfit kid, I can look back with relief that I found someone who gets me, and I, her. Both these tracks speak to those feelings and memories. It's great to have found this band, which gives me some of the energy that I found in my early/mid teens, in the glory days of Arena Rock, but still has a contemporary feel, and knows how to deliver both the, "We're not just gonna' lie down and take this" attitude, as well as a bit of tenderness...delivered with strength, not syrup.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2012I am a 40-something long-time rock fan who used to get very excited when my favorite bands put out new albums and also enjoyed discovering new exciting bands. Life often gets in the way of that over time for those of us who go the marriage, kids, etc., route. However, I did have the fortune of discovering Halestorm a couple of years back simply by hearing one of their singles on the radio. I love that first album by them and would give it a five-star review if I ever get around to writing a review for that album. That being said, this latest album from them ranks even higher in my book. This album completely rocked my world from the first time I heard it--surprising me with its biting heaviness and attitude.
What can you say about an album that starts off with songs like "Love Bites (So Do I)" and "Mz. Hyde"? That is simply attitude that can't be faked. Hard riffs and words laced with attitude. "I Miss the Misery" and "Freak Like Me" continued the frenzied pace, and then surprisingly three ballads in a row come up. All I can say is that each of them--"Beautiful", "In Your Room", and "Break"--are unique and different in their own right. All are absolute winners. From there, you ease back into the insane pace of this album with a commercial rocker "Rock Show"--a fun and catchy track. Then the insanity kicks back in with biting tracks "Daughters of Darkness" and "You Call Me a Bitch Like It's a Bad Thing". Yes, those songs are every bit as edgy as the titles make them sound. Again, I was floored when I first heard these tracks. Finally comes the epic closer "Here's To Us"--a gem of a ballad that none the less is laced with curse words. What an ending to an absolutely amazing ride of an album.
I cannot tout this album enough for those who like attitude-laced, female-fronted melodic hard rock that combines old school and modern elements. I can't play most of this album around my kids who are each under age 10, but when on my own or with fellow rocker adults I play this album into the ground. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un disco excelente
Un disco excelente de Halestorm, el mejor de la banda, creo.
Recomendado al 100%
Lo único malo fue que lo empaquetaron en un sobre sin ningún tipo de protección y la caja llegó estrellada

5.0 out of 5 stars Gran disco de esta novedosa banda
Segundo disco de ésta, relativamente, nueva banda de rock, que sorprende por su potente sonido, por la gran voz de su vocalista y sus pegadizos temas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Irresistibile

5.0 out of 5 stars The singing ability of Lzzy Hale makes this a superb album
‘The Strange Case Of…’ opens with “Love Bites (So Do I)”, which, in my opinion, is up there with the best hard rock songs; it’s loud, energetic and full of attitude. “Mz. Hyde” is the perfect follow-up and almost matches the previous song. It sounds like they have a Theremin in the background which is a brilliant touch (Theremins were often used in old horror films). “I Miss The Misery” and “Freak Like Me” are quite anthemic and surely will be a guaranteed position on their live setlist. It seems a strange decision to put three mellow songs in a row; “Beautiful With You”, “In Your Room”, “Break In”, but they’re all great tracks. The next batch of songs are similar to the more anthemic side of the band; “Rock Show”, “Daughters of Darkness”, “You Call Me A Bitch Like It’s A Bad Thing”, and “American Boys”. I do really enjoy this batch of songs, but some of the lyrics seem more simplistic. “Here’s To Us” closes the standard edition of the album which is in the vein of a retrospective/celebratory track; I can’t quite think what this reminds me of, but it could be more of a parody. The Deluxe Edition has three extra tracks; “Don’t Know To Stop”, “Private Parts” (which features James Michael of Sixx:A.M.) and “Hate It When You See Me Cry”. These three tracks are also of excellent quality. The first is an energetic song which would also be a good closing song, but then you have a great duet, then finish off with a mid-tempo track which is a brilliant closer. The Deluxe Edition is definitely the more complete experience since it boosts the running time from 41 minutes to 52. The nice mix of songs and the perfect production would make this a good album, but the singing ability of Lzzy Hale makes this a superb album. It’s really hard to choose the right superlatives to describe her vocal ability, but she has the best aspects of several singers; she is extremely confident, dynamic and has the attitude.
