He has coached high school athletes, collegiate athletes, trained general populations and spoken globally on the topics of strength training, conditioning, fat-loss, performance and program design. - Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2013I have played contact sports and been in law enforcement most of my life. After college football I got into law enforcement for 15 years. 5/3/1 is the best program I have used to gain size and strength. Jim Wendler has made getting strong easy to understand. I only wish I would have had this information years ago. If you can commit to the 5/3/1 plan it will work. I have had great success with it over the last year and half . I got a fellow Swat team member on 5/3/1 he and my younger brother are off to setting personal records. To make the gains you have to be honest and find your real mazes. Remember it makes getting strong easy to understand, not easy. If your not gonna squat or dead lift like most don't bother, get p90x and be a little bitch the rest of your life.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2013I have been a big fan of Jim Wendler's 5/3/1 for years. For the powerlifting version, Jim has added programming for heavy singles, and for some specific accessory lifts used primarily by geared lifters, like board presses and chains.
He has also added more detail on peaking and meet preparation.
If you are interested in the sport of powerlifting, get this book.
If you just want to get stronger, get this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2014A very nice description of a well thought out program.
Note that the progress of the strength gains is somewhat slow.
A novice may get faster result on a more Linear Program
(e.g Starting Strength or Stronglifts) until an Intermediate
level has been reached.
However, the slow progress can be beneficial, for example
for older people or people that have a limited amount of time
to spend on training, since you can focus on just the one main lift
of the day if you'd like.
All in all, the best/simplest strength program I've read about so far
that suits both beginners as well as more advanced lifters.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2013I bought 5/3/1. I read through it, and loved the simplicity of the program. I still wasn't quite sure how I should follow the program if I was doing a powerlifting meet, so I got this as well.
Jim Wendler still recommends either the original 5/3/1 program or a modified program with singles thrown in (with a few other switch ups). He provides a great amount of detail in terms of deloads, when to start changing the program for a meet, and what do when you're only a couple weeks out.
I don't train with gear, nor do I use steroids, but reading about the stuff is fascinating. It's all covered in here, as well as so many accessory exercise ideas my head spun. Yes, the BBB program is hard. Yes, it's worth it.
If you're not planning on doing powerlifting meet, you're good with just the regular 5/3/1 book. If you want to do a meet? Get this book. It's worth it. The basics are simple, but the details are always nice to have.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2015A lot of people at the local Crossfit Gym are using the 5/3/1 program. I start my fourth lifting cycle this week and have made great progress. Not everything in the book is for everyone. But it is easy to sort out.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2013I am on my fourth cycle and I am able to tell tell the increases in strength by the increasing weights lifted and the way I am starting to look. You must be committed to the program, as it is set up for gradual, continuous increases in strength over time.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2021I think I finally landed on my "forever program. Great stuff especially as it is focused yet flexible in the programs 👍
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2021Good information, but hard to get what he is explaining

5.0 out of 5 stars ARGA
After years trying different methods and programs to get stronger, 5/3/1 made me realized that you have to stick to the basics (squat, bench, deadlift and press). With 5/3/1 for powerlifting, Jim Wendler gives us a magnificent approach to programming, and easy to understand for everyone of us that are starting our powerlifting journey.
If you read scientific and technical books or articles about strength and conditioning, you realized that Wendler has the ability to take all the scientific concepts and principles and use them to elaborate his straightforward programs.
If you have ever listened him, he usually says: "To make long story short...". That's what he achieves in all his books.
It's a must.

5.0 out of 5 stars Calls it how it is.
I found a lot of good info in this book. It was easy to follow and he doesn't beat around the bush sugar coating it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best
The Wendler 5/3/1 system is amazing! It is so simple and effective, using his methods you can plan your workouts for the entire month, and make noticeable progress without burning out. However, if you are completely new to this I would recommend the original 5/3/1 book or beyond 5/3/1 book as this book is mor focused to powerlifting (as the title indicates.......)
