Surviving Christmas (DVD)
Directed by Mike Mitchell, Surviving Christmas finds Drew Latham (Ben Af fleck) uneager to spend another lonely Christmas in his own home. Longing for holidays past, Drew travels to his childhood home intending to relive the experience of a family Christmas — unfortunately, his family no longer lives there. This represents only a small snafu to Drew, who offers the Valco patriarch and his wife (Sopranos star James Gandolfini and Catherine O'Hara) a huge amount of money if they consent to pretend they are his parents and that he is a cherished member of the family. This entails participating in Latham family traditions, such as Christmas tree selection and crowded holiday shopping excursions. Though the Valcos reluctantly go along with Drew's requests, Alicia, their eldest daughter, arrives at home and refuses to comply with her "brother's" wishes.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2024Love this movie! A fun holiday ride packed with great characters, great talent, and fun, quirky scenes. Ben Affleck is great here, he just seems like he "is" the character, and his performance is fluid and flawless. James Gandolfini - what's not to love? He plays a big, burly husband and father navigating what the holiday season brings to his door. Christina Applegate is at her best here - just so much talent, she owns this role. Definitely recommend this as just a really fun holiday flick.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2022Ok ya'll I was laughing throughout the film, all the actors had great comedic delivery and the writing was good. It's an xmas movie of course it's cheesy and that's a given. Unlike hallmark it had some off color jokes and raunchy bits, not everyone's cup of tea but I didn't mind it. Maybe would be awkward to watch with parents and young children given that but it was only like 5 minutes of the film. Wish they made the family a tiny bit friendlier in the end towards the millionaire since he brought them together; and showed more warmth develop, but it was mostly focused on romance in the end between the daughter and the millionaire. It did show the rest of the family evolving though which was nice regardless. It's not a hallmark movie so it's not as cheesy as I would have liked but more realistic. 8/10 :)
- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2017This was an official box office bomb. Made in 2003, it was finally released in 2004. The budget was 45 million. The box office take was a measly 15.1 million. Critics HATED it. It is ranked number 91 out of 100 worst films of the 2000s. Ben Affleck was nominated for the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actor. The film was also nominated as was the screenplay.
The plot is severely limited to a lot of spite. A suspiciously wealthy advertising executive (Affleck as Drew) rents a family for Christmas. They just happen to live in his childhood home. Dumb luck or grave misfortune on their part. Proving people will do anything for $250,000 and an added $75,000. The story is driven by greed and desperation, portraying a jaded look at the commercial aspects of the holiday.
I especially hate to admit that I found myself laughing at a lot of inappropriate humor. It is such a twisted, bizarre premise. But. I kind of, sort of, with great reluctance, actually like it. I’m so ashamed.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2022I realize that I am posting a review after we've been watching this movie for many, many years. But this movie is so funny and has become a tradition for us. It doesn't matter how many times we've seen it, we love it!! If we can't find any other good Christmas movies to watch (that aren't unbelievably cheesy) this is one we fall back on!! Great cast!!!!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2020Nothing sappy or overly religious for us non-Christians - but still with an important message about family -whoever you call family - being the most important and best thing about Christmas. For me it had everything; spoiled millionaire who at heart was lonely and missing family he never really had, running from the past, finding what you really want instead of what you thought you wanted. Funny, dysfunctional, and at its core, sweet and heart warming and just quirky enough to keep one's interest At times, laugh out loud funny. The bannister scene was priceless At times, sweet and poignant and full of life lessons that are what allow closeness and true intimacy. More like this please.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2009The movie has decent actors, an okay premise...but it just doesn't manage to be a good movie. It is about a man who is rich (I guess, they really only skim over that part) and pays a family living in his childhood home to be HIS family over Christmas. Not sure how many days it is supposed to be (they skip that part, too) but they do these family-type things together, but the family doesn't really like it, just doing it for the money. Then a sister shows up, and the man's girlfriend at the end (I guess...we only saw her for like 20 seconds at the beginning) and they all don't get along.
To me, it just seemed like different writers came up with different scenes they thought would fit the premise, and they just strung them together until it was long enough for a movie. Tack on some happy ending...done! None of the scenes were ever led into, resolved, or even discussed again. Family goes and gets a tree, it is hard to put on the car....next scene. They go shopping, get out of the car....next scene. They must have run out of things because they start to throw in really goofy stuff, mom getting a photo shoot (what a waste of Catherine O'Hara's talent in this movie!), flying in a helicopter to go sled riding, people attending a play...just random things that really don't move the story, just fill in time. It is too bad because there were parts that were actually starting to get funny, but they just stop. You never feel you have any idea what the characters are going to say or do because you never get to know them. You just sort of watch and wonder what is going on.
I will probably watch it again...I usually give movies another chance to grow on me, but it really should have been better the first time.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2023Starts out a bit silly, then turns very laugh out loud funny and heartwarming. I will watch again next Christmas!

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect christmas movie for christmas !
I'm not a big fan of Ben Affleck but i think he is perfect to play the man that everyone wants to kill after a day !
It's fresh and fun, two thumbs for the roles of James Gandolfini and Christina Applegate (too bad that we don't see her more often in movies now)
