Wisdom of the Buddha: The Unabridged Dhammapada (Dover Thrift Editions: Religion) Kindle Edition
Gathered by Buddhist masters into related groups — "On Earnestness," "Flowers," "The Fool," "The Wise Man," "Happiness," "Pleasure" — these ancient texts transcend the limitations of time, tradition, and culture to express the ethical principle underlying all wise and compassionate philosophy and conduct. Here are the Four Truths that reveal the nature of the world and our lot in it; here also is the Eightfold Path, the way to enlightenment, incorporating the means to overcome the essential suffering revealed by the Four Truths as the essence of life. The Dhammapada serves as a coherent summation of the necessities for following the Eightfold Path as well as an encouraging and thought-provoking resource to consult along the way.
Expressed with great beauty and translated with painstaking scholarship, this classic guide is certain to stimulate, challenge, and inspire students of religion and philosophy as well as all who thirst for enlightenment.

“A man is not called wise because he talks and talks again; but if he is peaceful, loving and fearless then he is in truth called wise.”
“Conquer the angry one by not getting angry; conquer the wicked by goodness; conquer the stingy by generosity, and the liar by speaking the truth.
“Hatred does not cease by hatred, but only by love; this is the eternal rule.”
These ancient verses offer a compelling introduction to Buddhist thought, revealing the Four Truths.
They concern the nature of the world and our lot in it and the Eightfold Path to enlightenment.
The means by which to overcome the essential suffering revealed by the Four Truths as the essence of life.
Few of the sacred texts of the world's great religions present their wisdom with the clear simplicity of the verses of the Buddhist Dhammapada, or Path to Virtue. Its direct style, clarity, and beauty place it at the forefront of Buddhist sacred literature, and its noble intent raises it to the highest level of humanity's spiritual guides.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2010Buddhism is a recent interest of mine and this lovely little book was a wonderful first look. It's very easy to read and more matter-of-fact than I thought. There is no bulk of metaphysical nonsense that some will say one is either too young, too inexperienced or too whatever too understand. It's not a list of impossible rules for living. It's like a small book of life goals and advice for achieving happiness in a natural, stress free, non-guilt producing way. It's good common sense and not too lofty or unreachable. It explains a way of achieving order out of chaos. I think I'll keep my copy on my nightstand for bedtime reading and for those I nights I wake too soon. It makes me feel so calm.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2017Actually I give almost all dhamma books 5 stars because it's a good thing to promote with ignorance, greed, and hate being so popular these days.
I have also read many nice things about Max Muller in other reading, about what a nearly enlighten being he was, etc.. so I'm grateful for people like him and am cognizant that this was written when NO good translations of anything Buddhist in English existed so I'm sure it was a really great blessing at the time.
However I don't think it holds up that well compared to more modern translations. The language is awkward and as someone who has spent alot of time reading the Nikayas etc I think the vocabulary used by Max was of the time (pre 1900s) did not convey the complex meanings of the Pali -> English as well as thing translated more recently. I think since there, there has been a great deal of effort to find more descriptive words to convey Buddhist terms that were not available to him, terms that even if they were available at the time have since been nuanced by Buddhists that weren't nuanced then..
Holding this truth, it was a great effort and and only praise for Max for doing the real pioneering translations as NOTHING (including good Pali -> English dictionaries) were not available at the time AND English was not his native language. More modern translations have this advantage are a much easier read and convey the meaning that the Buddha was meaning to convey. I kept asking myself - is this Buddhism I'm reading about? It seemed very foreign even though Buddhism is really the center of my life.
A great read for a historical perspective of Buddhisms entry into the west, but you if it's really the meaning of the Dhammapada you want, you should look to a more recent translation. Still I feel I owe a debt of gratitude to Max.. thanks Max! Without you the next steps may have been delayed by decades or longer.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2015This is a great translation of the core texts and tenets of Buddhism. So much nowadays is secondhand and thirdhand...get it firsthand from the Dhamapada. Read it for yourself.
The passages are meant to be repeatedly read and contemplated. This is the Bible of Buddhism.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2020Although I took a daily approach to the readings, that way I could contemplate the teaching. I find a brief introduction to the chapter would have been helpful.
Very insightful writings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Small book Big on wisdom
As I get older and faced with a health issue I needed some wise inspiration to help pull me through what is to come over the next number of months. Some of it makes me think too hard, but most of it makes me nod and contemplate things in my life and in this world. Reading it does take my mind off my situation, so 5 stars for self preservation.

2.0 out of 5 stars Me aburrió
Está escrito de una manera que me aburrió, lo terminé porque termino todo lo que empiezo pero me parece que no es didáctico sino filosofal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Met my expectations
This is/was a book that I chose as a first considerate step towards grasping the knowledge of Buddhism. The amount of literature on the subject was overwhelming. But don't deceive yourself as they don't want to enlighten you, just to take your money, so the main argument here was the price of the book and I have ended up with this piece.
Now, in the process and especially after I've finished reading this tiny yet straightforward book, I've found that Buddhism is much more extremist than I've ever imagined. I've found that Buddha(the Buddha) was leading a life of an ascetic before he received the enlightenment and became Buddha. And before that a life of a prince.
Here's a few quotations that struck me most:
"Him I call indeed a Brahmana who has no interests..."
"Him I call indeed a Brahmana who fosters no desires for this world or for the next..."
Brahmana is Brahman or Arahant: "A "worthy one" or "pure one"; a person whose mind is free of defilement, who has abandoned all ten of the fetters that bind the mind to the cycle of rebirth, whose heart is free of mental effluents, and who is thus not destined for further rebirth. A title for the Buddha and the highest level of his noble disciples".
So if the point of Buddhism is to end cycle of rebirth and reach Nirvana(end of the world), I will have to completely detach myself from the world. Bummer. And if I would only use some of his teachings I still would be stuck in the cycle, thus leaving my bold attempt in vain.
