I'm a new addition to the Avett fanbase. If you are looking to join in as well, I would start with Carolina Jubilee. This is such a fun and energetic CD that I can't stop listening to from beginning to end. Avett sings of love, loss, and healing -- topics that I think all of us can easily relate to. While I favor the romping bluegrassy tunes on this CD, I still find the slower, more thoughtful ballads to be incredibly moving and enjoyable. And the harmonies they produce -- WOW. Very catchy. I find myself singing along with every song. I've listened to some of their latest material, but it's a little too slow and droning for my taste (although I'll probably end up purchasing them anyway), but this early album in the Avett discography is just perfect. After this CD, I suggest listening in the order they were released; the next CD, Mignonette, is also an amazing album with a similar style to Carolina Jubilee. Do yourself a favor and check this one out.

This may be one of the most raw TAB albums but I think it is probably one of their best and most underrated albums. Pretty Girl from Locust also has to be one of the most underrated Avett songs in the whole catalog. Just a fun album from start to finish. Would love to see Smoke in Our Lights & Offering played live more...at this point if they play it live it's one of those hidden gems to savor.

I got turned on to the Avett Brothers by the HBO documentary; ordered six of their albums. They are all consistent quality and they have enough differences to be separately enjoyable. I recommend any and all of them. Apparently there is now a genre called 'NewGrass' and I think this would fit there. This group is interesting on many levels, lyrics, music, performance, harmony. If you enjoy country and/or folk music, you will surely enjoy this group.

In the spectrum of front-porch jugband bluegrass to polished banjo pop, this album falls far closer to the former. I know a lot of people are die hard early-Avett bluegrass fans. But me, I'm more drawn to their newer indie-pop-influenced sound. Depending on your preferences, you will respond to this very differently. If you like the stripped-down banjo, bluegrass sound, you will love this album.

This band is amazing. This may be one of their first polished studio records, but it was the last one I bought. The reason being that I had live versions of almost all these songs. Still, this album has all the elements of a great Avett record: lively, sincere, touch of whimsy. 12 years later, they still play many of the songs on this record live, which is a testament to enduring nature of these songs.

If you've never heard of the Avett Brothers, buy this CD and give them a listen!! Buy any of their CDs!! They have great lyrics and a beautiful sound! Sort of bluegrass with plenty of rock influence. Excellent musicians!! Super energy and songs that will touch your heart! Great for young and old. I highly encourage anyone looking for something different and new to include Avett Brothers to their music collection! You won't be disappointed!!

While I am very happy with the success the Avett Brothers have found recently, I prefer their older albums. Carolina Jubilee is a great example of the unpolished vibe that gave their music such an incredible feel for the longest time. If you appreciate the new folk trend with Mumford and Sons and others, you should give this album a try.

    Avett Brothers

Great music, but a bit raw in places. I personally enjoy their later stuff like I & Love & You.
