Seems like the music scene has been starving for real talent these days. You could listen to all of the auto-tuned/pitch corrected drivel out there if you are willing to settle for sub-par schlock. I am not. It's nice when someone with obvious talent and soul comes along. It's also nice that there has been a bit of a blues revival going on lately. I'm a big fan of The Black Keys (mostly their stuff prior to "Brothers") and some of Gary Clark Jr's bluesier stuff runs in that vein ("Bright Lights", "Don't Owe You a Thang" or "When My Train Pulls In"). But he also show his range with a song like "Things Are Changin'" where he branches off into soul (think John Legend). I am glad he can span quite a few genres. I have not even mentioned his guitar virtuosity. Being a (mediocre) guitarist myself I can listen to his playing over and over and it never gets stale. Especially the last two songs on this EP where it is just Gary and a guitar, nothing else. It's music stripped down to its essence and it sounds amazing. When you can listen to a singer and a single instument and feel like nothing is missing you know you are dealing with a real talent. This is great music.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2013Gary Clark Jr. delivers some great music on this Ep. Mix of hard out guitar rock and acoustic. Immediately draws comparison with other guitar greats, and at the same time its his own sound.
The title track 'Bright Lights' is a rambunctious fuzz rich rocking beat that has you cranking up the volume and stepping on the gas.
Followed, by 'Don't Own You A Thang' which is an upbeat rock-a-long bluesy number - whoa, those feet of mine are doin' their own thang - and you'll find yourself up on the dance floor or playing skiffle board with the band.
The tempo then slows with 'Things Are Changin' ' - an acoustic number that shows off Gary's lyrical voice.
The Ep finishes with 'When My Train Pulls In' a second acoustic number, and a real tour de force, which shows you don't have to plugged in to deliver a musical experience that has as much colour as a firework display.
Looking forward to seeing GKJr at NO Jazz Fest April 2013.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2012When I hear a song I like on the radio, I write it down so I can play samples on Amazon to see if I'd like to buy it. When I wrote down Clark's Bright Lights, I noted, "Just buy it." Which I did. Lead guitar oriented rock. Soaring guitar. My stuff (I'm an old Zep, Zapp, Jimi, Clap fan). Not 5 star because one acoustic piece was a little weak. I'm glad I bought this.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2012Oh boy, how I still love material music. I mean, it's just something else to hold a CD case (or even an LP) in your hand. Manuseate the case, sleeve, read the credits, etc. So much better than mp3s. With such great music as this, the pleasure is even bigger. Great music, real blues, with a contemporary touch. The two electric songs are rare examples of the evolution of the blues, maintaning it's roots. The two acoustic is just something you'd love to listen to at home, with friends or loved one, but also in a nice blues bar-jazz café.
The only downside to it (I'm being ironic in a way, I knew that, of course) is there are only 4 songs. Could listen to him playing and singing for an hour, no problem!
By the way, it is 20and so minutes long. Fair enough. Listened to it twice in a row as it arrived.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2014Blues rock at its best. Gary Clark Jr. can play the guitar like a beast. He shines where some many other guitar players of our time fail. His hooks are memorable and poppy enough to get stuck in someone's head but he never forfeit's his talent while still being completely relevant. This EP has 4 great tunes! Its got versatility. This guy is getting it right where others are trying. I heard him on Palladia once and immediately fell in love with his sound. This was on sell on Amazon so I tried it out. Anyone that is missing the great sound of the past should check this out.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2020The song "Things Are Changin" on this EP is AMAZING. I am an avid Gary Clark Jr. fan.
(I own all of his albums). This version of this song is WAY BETTER than the regular studio version which is on The Blak and Blu Album. The other songs are impressive, as well. Buy this!! 🤘🏼
- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2016All in all pretty disappointing. One really good song that we all heard and convinced us to buy this EP.
The other songs are examples of current popular trends (in song writing or recording techniques) and really have nothing much in common with the real music this artist can create.
His later album (The Life os Sonny Boy....) really showcases his playing, writing and singing much better.
Don't need to waste your time and money on this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2012I can't wait for the full length EP to drop later this year. I have a feeling Gary Clark Jr. is going to be heard from a lot more, and outside the blues music circle. Bright Lights Big City is an amazing blues rock song but the other more acoustic songs provide more depth than you'd expect from a 4 song EP. The last track, When My Train Comes In, sits at around 9 minutes and is one of the best songs I've heard in a while. Rock fans to blues fans to country fans will enjoy this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top notch blues rock!
This mini album is a great starting point for anyone wanting to find out what all the fuss is about. Contains some superb guitar on the stretched out jams as well as some superb shorter tracks. Recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bright Lights EP
Bellissimo EP,
davvero interessante...
blues rock, ritmi diversi e affascinanti, musiche calde, rift di chitarra graffianti.
Le due versioni acustiche molto rilassanti... chiudi gli occhi... e ascolti.

5.0 out of 5 stars didn't think I would enjoy it, but
Bought this for my bf, didn't think I would enjoy it, but, wow... What a fantastic cd. Not a song on it I want to skip. Of course music is very personal, so to each their own. I'm loving it. Great mix of rock, and blues, what a smooth and mellow voice. I'm really loving this.

5.0 out of 5 stars gnadenlos toller Gitarrist und Sänger
Sehr empfehlenswert!!!
