Editorial Reviews

Featuring jazz interpretations of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker, the album has come to be recognised as one of Duke Ellington's most important albums of the 1960s. Yet when the Duke and his writing partner Billy Strayhorn first announced plans to take the classical ballet and perform a jazz version, even members of Duke's orchestra expressed their doubts that the project would amount to much.

Romantic-classical meets classic jazz masters. A true delight!

Duke Ellington and the band do the most incredible job of a rendition of The Nutcracker Suite that I've ever heard. Our whole family just LOVES THIS ALBUM!!! It's so good!

Just what I wanted. Sounds great.

My dad used to have this on vinyl years ago and wanted it on CD but after searching in the UK I found it was unavailable and ordered it from Amazon in the States. The tracks are just as he remembers them, we were worried about the sound quality after reading a review on here, however our fears were completely unfounded. The sound quality was superb and Ellington's take on this classic ballet work is smooth and classy. I recommend to all jazz fans they add this to their library.

Are you a dad, tired of hearing the sugary symphonic nutcracker blasting from your wife's stereo all Christmas? Just because she was a music major for one semester in college, does that mean you have to put up with the sugar plum fairies every year? The Duke has changed the names a little to protect the innocent, but delivers a great rendition of assorted nutcracker tunes with saxophone and trumpet. You'll listen year round to this one!

I was inspired to buy the CD after seeing the University of Colorado jazz ensemble preform it live. The recording is really enjoyable and will be a great addition to our holiday music collection. The down side was even though i ordered it a couple for weeks before Christmas and inquired about receiving before the holiday the shipper was unable to fulfill my request and the CD arrived early January.

The music of course is great, especially if you love jazz-flavored holiday music, but this is just a courtesy review for others out there who (like me) still order CD's from time to time: The 2002 remastered import release, from Hallmark Music & Entertainment #711542, is actually missing most of Side 2 from the original 1960 vinyl release... the CD version, for some reason, runs-out at track 9, "Arabesque Cookie (Arabian Dance)", whereas the original Columbia Odyssey LP release had five additional selections right after for "Peer Gynt Suites No. 1 & 2." Not entirely sure why these are missing (rights issues?), which is why I can't give this a full 5 star rating. Buyer be warned, especially for those who may have grown-up listening to the LP version in the '60s.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un grande classico rivisitato
Reviewed in Italy on April 6, 2018

5.0 out of 5 stars Genial!
